Too soon you say?

Let's hear from the Man himself:

"One of the 'rules' of this record has been to orchestrate using only monophonic voices. No chords. Anywhere," Reznor says. "Most of the synthesis has been done with a rather elaborate (and ever-growing) modular rig and recorded live." The set will feature a combination of live and programmed drumming.

And on the artistic "process":

Sessions are currently in progress in New Orleans, and last week found Reznor and engineer Atticus Ross sifting through all the demos created since "The Fragile." According to the site, "they are excited about a track they found which has no recollection of recording."

For the frats in the back row:

Further postings report that drummer Jerome Dillon's "playing has added a new element of violence they're experimenting with." One song described as "slow and brutal and heavy" was reportedly so loud that it blew up the speakers in the studio during playback.

Full Disclosure:
I really liked The Fragile. Really! Well one disc anyway, can't remember which. And the rest of the Halo catalog is what it is. This sounds so goddamn poncy.

sorry for 2x post, server was wigging out.

jubal (jube), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, as insufferably melodramatic as trent can be sometimes, ill always be excited to hear his newest stuff.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

If this is true, then Trent Reznor has won my complete apathy. The Fragile sucked, but I would have been willing to give him a chance on this one. But "no chords"?? No thanks.

Richard K, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

No chords? Just like Flin Flon!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm trying to think of what the worst thing Trent has put out is and I've come to the shocking realization that it's probably the "Broken" EP.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Violent programmed + live drumming brutality? Um, yeah, I'm interested.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm trying to think of what the worst thing Trent has put out is and I've come to the shocking realization that it's probably the "Broken" EP.

That's something I never thought I'd hear! Broken's probably my favorite. Why don't you like it?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

('course to give you some idea of my TR proclivities my favorite thing related to him is the 10,000 Homo DJs remake of 'Supernaut' off of Nativity in Black)

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it, but it's probably the least NIN-y thing he's released under that name (ie, way more emphasis on guitar and noise-punishment than keyboard manipulation and songcraft).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, I think I unilaterally prefer the "Fixed" versions of the songs to the "Broken" version (ie I am only a fan of NIN + unrelenting guitar in certain contexts).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm interested in hearing him do a really brutal record WITHOUT using a lot of guitars (as in what it sounds like he's doing with the new one).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Seconded.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe a mindflayer/reznor mash-up will approximate this album

scissors (Honda), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Seconded."

Thirded!

pitchfork was all over this today, parodying nine inch nails and trent reznor in their news section. but it wasn't even funny, they just used a bunch of "goths are stupid" cliches.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

it's one thing to make fun of something, another to do it so lazily.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Anything slow and brutal and heavy that blows up speakers is worth a few minutes of my time.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anybody outside of the States think of Trent as a musician? Or indeed, think of him at all?

The Gary-Numan-a-like tit.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Comedy Goths need not apply, obviously.

People living in glass record stores shouldn't throw Drag City cutouts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If you go over to NIN.com and hit "access," Reznor is taking questions. I asked where they got those shiny pants. No answer yet.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Trent is fucking with people / the media. I've heard even more off-the-wall craziness about the album. The title, the ideas, and the theory are all self-parody, and I think it's funny how people are responding.

Nkozyra, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

And the pitchfork thing yesterday was a complete embarrassment.

Nkozyra, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, Ned Raggett from rec.music.industrial, back in the day (as they say).

Nkozyra, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh heh, then you'll remember deX!/Dan Perry and K!z!K (now donut bitch here) as well?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea of a pop-industrial album full of nothing but fugues.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still waiting for you to record it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The Fragile is the NIN I album I NEVER, EVER play anymore (the first disc has a scratch that's made it impossible for me to play 2-3 of the tracks on it). It's like a parody of everything else he'd done up to that point. Some of the atmospherics are interesting (and there might have been 3-5 songs out of the whole thing that were impressive) but overall it was a waste.

Yet: I'm looking forward to this new one. What's wrong with me?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand hatred for _The Fragile_, particularly since it's got two of his greatest singles ("We're In This Together Now", "Into The Void") and some of his best album tracks ("The Fragile", "The Wretched", "The Day The Whole World Went Away", that one super-excellent instrumental; actually pretty much the entirety of disc 1 minus the first song).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The Fragile had good tracks, but as a whole was long, laborious and to the brim with filler. I think it would have made a very decent 1-disc album with several of his classic extra Halo's worth of b-side material.

Nkozyra, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, were u DeX! from alt.cure????

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The revelations are coming!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never owned the Fragile, but I occasionally borrow it from my girlfriend or a friend and I always (re)discover some fantastic track that completely surprises me with its goodness.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha - deX is actually the only name I remember from alt.cure (actually I also remember Spanglebaby...)!!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

the fact that the entire nin.com website is now images of text rather than actual text is a dud, but I found the question/answer section last night and laughed my ass off. Oh yeah, Trent likes the DFA too!

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the Fragile. It's actually held up for me over the years, probably because of the intstrumentals, which to me are one of the best things about the album.

Except for "Starfuckers, Inc" most of the "rockin" (haha) tracks on the Fragile feel sort of half-assed. The album is best when the emotions conveyed in the song are "moody" or "confused" rather than "pissed off".

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

They updated the website! Swoooooooon.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"It's actually held up for me over the years, probably because of the intstrumentals, which to me are one of the best things about the album."

It was the first NIN cd I actually bought (roommates had the others), mostly as I liked the instrumentals, especially that really epic one with Adrian Belew playing guitar.

earlnash, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Raymond C. OTM about everything, esp. The Fragile being like a parody of his earlier stuff.
I seriously hate The Fragile with a passion; it's just so stupid and naive sounding! Here for years I had myself convinced that he was going to make the perfect post-"Perfect Drug" dance-industrial-pop album (visions of stilted d-n-b references in interviews that I could laugh off knowing at least he was listening to what would make him make good product), and instead he somes out with something that sounds like Tori Amos channelling an Adult Contemporary idea of "hard rock". I think he just got old really.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

If I ever heard a Tori Amos song that sounded like "The Fragile" or "The Wretched" I Would take back every scathing thing I ever said about her (and that pig).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

http://nin.com/access/5-07/questions5.gif

I seem to remember I used to lurk on rec.music.industrial myself, though I am quite certain I never posted anything. plus ça change...

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of Tori Amos, every time I hear Evanescence I think, hey, it's Y Kant Tori Read. I like her, Choirgirl Hotel is gorgeous.
