There are about 20 other tunes I feel terrible for not picking.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Way Out is a must.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I know already! I just put "Way Out -->" (I love the arrow!) in my latest iPod playlist.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I have some great memories of MON being the only dance cd in a mates house one night

that and a now 25 with HIGHER STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS on it, haha.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

ehehehehehehe...

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

it will be interesting to see which one track features the most

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Great!

The Girl With The Sun In Her Head (oh when those rave chords hit, it's the greatest track evah)
Lush 3-1
Halcyon
Remind
Out There Somewhere
Forever
Spare Parts Express
Kein Trink Wasser
Way Out
You Lot (first half of the new album is amazingly good, also could've gone for something like Acid Pants)

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Are we all separating the 2-track songs?

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Lush 3 (both parts)
The Box 2
Satan (live)
Belfast
Dwr Budr
PETROL
Halcyon+On+On
Sad But True

Transient

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

With all the ILM Orbital luv floating around, I'm surprised this has never been done.
My X:
Out There Somewhere
Attached
Impact *USA* (not the version on the brown album)
Lush 3.1 + 3.2
Belfast
Monday
Philosophy by Numbers
Remind
The Box (single version)
Nothing Left

I need more time to gain perspective on the new record before adding any of those tracks. However, I could see "One Perfect Sunrise" or "Transient" * turning up there eventually (but don't ask me what I would boot off of the present X to make room for them).

* although I still don't even know what my faves are on the new record either

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

no-one will pick 'Frenetic' :(

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm only now looking at everyone else's list (I didn't want any bias before I made my choices). They're all really different, with no more than three or four in common between any of them, and no single track has been picked by all (even with only six lists posted so far).
Orbital rule.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

But Halcyon on four of six lists surely counts for something?

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Box ^_^

And Which one has Worf on it?

jubal harshaw (jube), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

But Halcyon on four of six lists surely counts for something?
Impact and Lush are also on four lists. It's interesting that all three of those tracks are on the same album (although Halcyon + On + On != Halcyon, I'm not sure if those were intentional ommissions or not).

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, substitute Satan for Technologique Park. Although I feel bad for leaving out Halcyon, and Times Fly (Slow) and Forever, and Sunday, and...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

so what you're saying is you really love more than just ten tracks by Orbital??? ;)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Beached actually any good? Awful Leo Decaprio intro, but it's been going round in my head for weeks now.

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Beached" would be ace as an instrumental. Sadly I've not been able to find one anywhere.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Belfast
Impact
Halcyon and On and On
I Wish I Had Duck Feet
Sad But True
Girl With the Sun in Her Head
Adnan's
Way Out
Spare Parts Express
Funny Break

Haven't heard the upcoming one either.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I like "Beached" quite a bit. One of my favorite post-In Sides tracks, Leo and all.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm shocked that Dwr Budr isn't getting any love! The first half is sublimely sad.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, substitute Satan for Technologique Park. Although I feel bad for leaving out Halcyon, and Times Fly (Slow) and Forever, and Sunday, and...
Holy shit, I mixed up my titles -- I put "Monday" on my list but I meant "Sunday". Thanks for the reminder, Matt.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Chime
Speed Freak
Midnight
Impact
Monday
Halcyon
Philosophy By Numbers
I Wish I Had Duck Feet
The Girl With The Sun In Her Head
The Box (28 minute version)

After In Sides I stopped listening, I remember previewing their more recent albums in a store somewhere and going "ehhh." I am all old-school.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dwr Budr" would be my #11.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That 28 minute version of "The Box" is kind of godlike.

Tom, I really, really, really, REALLY recommend at least checking out the later singles.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone sleeps on "The Sinner", which is not only insanely good, but deserves bonus points for transforming one of their weakest tracks ("The Saint") into something godlike.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim is COMPLETELY OTM.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

todd swiss (eliti), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Dwr Budr (and with much love - the skittery percussion over the vast pads is nothing short of sublime - I actually did a 6th form (second-to-last high-school year) music composition assignment worked out using my computer and my dad's synth which was loosely based around this track. The [classically oriented] music teachers hated it, or at least, were bemused. I got a crap mark either way. Hm, I wonder if I've still got a copy floating about somewhere... this was in the 500MB hard drive era so probably not.)
Adnan's
The Box (both parts)
Out There Somewhere pt 2
Sad But True
Are We Here?
Lush
Spare Parts Express

Middle of Nowhere never caught on to me the way Snivilisation and In Sides did... Haven't actually given the other albums a proper listen.

How come no-one makes music like this any more?

damian_nz (damian_nz), Thursday, 13 May 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and by Lush I actually meant Times Fly

damian_nz (damian_nz), Thursday, 13 May 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard The Sinner a couple of times but don't remember feeling it. 'Dwr Budr' is my #16 i think. The Box part 3 is good (esp. the 'bonkers science lab' effects)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The lukewarm response to MoN baffles me to this day - that three-track segue at the beginning is a good as anything they've released... especially the "WHY CAN'T ANYBODY HEAR MEEEEEEEEEEE?!" scream midway through Spare Parts Express, and the moment where that queasy synth melody kicks in during Know Where To Run. Its like the Brown Album beephed up - what could possibly be wrong with that?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

MoN is too dense. I like it, but there's not much space.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Kish Kash was my favourite record of last night = space is overrated.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

night = year i assume. yeh i think MoN's first-half is spectacular really. in a lengthy review of it i wrote for uni rag a few months before it was actually released i griped a little about the way the hits on the opening 'suite' are so stark and tapped out - it seemed a bit 'cheap' at first but the subtle nuances made up for it as always.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt makes end of night lists, nightly.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Middle of Nowhere is great, yes - although I don't like "I Don't Know You People" much, esp. after it's excellent creepy opening. "Know Where To Run" particularly is such a RUSHY track. Ronan OTM about dancing around the house to this album; I remember doing that with some friends back when it came out. We were drunk but/and it was beautiful.

Re: why no-one makes this kind of music. I suspect it's a case of Orbital being too maximalist for the dancefloor (or rather, for DJs to use) but mostly too physical for the IDM crowd - although when I think of Orbital's sound I always forget their forays into non-dance territory.

In terms of the danceable Orbital stuff I'd say that, apart from the obvious reference point of lush detroit techno, the closest modern reference point would be the more maximalist, expansive, epic electro-house, which shares a lot of Orbital's qualities: stiff and synthey but with a housey bouyancy, increasingly expansive iterations around core melodic ideas, suite-arrangements. Ewan Pearson esp, but also stuff like that Tfieschwarz remix of Spektrum.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 13 May 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

is there more than one Golden Girls track?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Kinetic is the only one i know of (though it's been rereleased enough times with varous dodgy mixes to quantify as a different track by now)

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i love it, but i love 'Frenetic' just as much

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The "problem" with The Middle of Nowhere for me was that it wasn't Insides (youknow...that big shoe etc). Still a very good album and that acid thingy in 'Spare Parts Express' for me is the definitive aural equivalent of that first E-wave where everything for a short period feels "too much". Yes? No?

Omar (Omar), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! I was gonna say that Middle of Nowhere is a very E album! Not as good as In Sides though, agreed.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 13 May 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

this took me forever to make up my mind

out there somewhere (part 2)
girl with the sun in her head
planet of the shapes
impact usa (the earth is burning: diversion)
mock tudor
petrol
halcyon+on+on
nothing left (part 2)
belfast
lush 3.1

dyson (dyson), Saturday, 15 May 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

A small correction ... my choice of Lush 3.1 + 3.2 should be changed to Lush (Euro-tunnel disaster '94).
Don't know how I messed that up.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 15 May 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
jesus fuk - i totally forgot about desert storm that is such an effing good track
i guess if i have to keep it to 10 i would take out lush...

how come no one else has picked desert ¿

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 3 June 2004 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

or mock tudor
