"1965" is to the Afghan Whigs what "Thank You" is to Royal Trux. Yes?

because i somehow missed 1965 in college and was on a serious Gentleman kick the other day and want to finally check it out.

Seems divisive, to say the least.

Thank You is my favorite Royal Trux album. Does it hold a similar appeal?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Is "thank you" unbearably cheesy and lame? if not, then, no.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

1965 is somethin' hot. It's definitely the most pop-friendly incarnation of the Whigs, and the only album where the Motown comparisons actually make some sense. Top heavy, certainly, but it's almost up there with Gentlemen.

Akiva Gottlieb, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the main problem with 1965 is that all the quality material is frontloaded. The sad part is that it means the Whigs went out on a whimper.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

as i recall there were 3 or 4 songs that were great, total high-gloss gaudy stonesy things, and the rest was sort of dull, but i got rid of this a long time ago.

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

a blight on their catalogue?

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

the most unlistenable excesses of "twin infinitives" >>> "thank you"

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

That's crazy. Nothing on Twin Infinites is as good as "You're Gonna Lose".

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

that's the only track from "thank you" i can stand!

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

(i was exaggerating a little too)

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ive never heard Thank You, but if it's by far their best album, then correct.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll stick up for "Thank You". "Twin Infinitives" is probably theoretically the better Trux record.....but "Thank you" had some actual tunes. Never heard that Whigs album, sorry.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

aww c'mon, guys, you NEVER listen to Twin Infinitives, it's such a lame critic thing to call that your favorite. IMHO there has never been a greater rock and roll band that RTX, but even I never listen to Twin Infinitives all that much.

I guess you all like Metal Machine Music MUCH better than White Light / White Heat, too, right? Gimme a break.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see that comparison at all. It's more like MMM compared with Loaded. That said, I still like Loaded and Thank You.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Better that is.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"accelerator" is my fave trux, follwed by "disorder"

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

and "congregation" the best whigs

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha, I was just thinking of making a MMM comparison while I was away from my computer. To be fair to TI though, I did listen to it quite a few times, and there is one guitar bit that pops into my head from time to time, more than I can say for MMM.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

1965 is unquestionably my favorite Afghan Whigs album. One of the sexiest rock albums you'll ever hear.

Mark M, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

1965 is in my top ten albums of all time.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dulli's a wee bit too over the top on it--the 30 seconds of sex noises, all of "John the Baptist"...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend put "John the Baptist" on a mix for me and I really like it!! Shockingly so! He thinks 1965 is like the best album ever. He tried to play it for me one time but I was drunk. I remember dancing, though, it seemed fun. Somebody should convince me how the album's worth worshipping.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend of mine claims he lost his virginity while Black Love was playing. I think he is lying.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 07:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Metal Machine Music MUCH more than White Light/White Heat

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone heard the Trux cover of the whole of Exile? I haven't but I'd like to.

Trux albums...er I don't know. But I'd go for Dogs of Love EP, The Flag and maybe accelerator if pushed.

oats (oats), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, you mean the pussy galore cover of the whole of Exile?
Trux albums - best is "Sweet Sixteen"! Surely! (although roger on point w/"Thank You" too.) they're all 'the best' in a certain light, except maybe for "Veterans" which is merely really good.

jwd, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I forgot to mention how sexy 1965 is. The whole thing is one big hey-girl-at-the-end-of-the-bar-tonight-you-are-mine come-on. The 1965 poster hangs right above my bed, and as a result I haven't adhered to my celibacy vow for months.

Akiva Gottlieb, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

god I hate that shit on 1965. It's embarassing. It isn't sexy, it's like, I dunno, Daniel Baldwin naked. Does that make sense? I still love Black Love and Gentlemen the most; 1965 lost all the menacing tones that I enjoyed.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

more like stephen baldwin naked, i think

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only got three Royal Trux albums but I'd place Thank You at the bottom after Veterans of Disorder and Cats and Dogs. I like them all, but the bass playing on Thank You gets kinda obnoxious, it's way too up front in the mix and on top of that the guy's gets into some Les Claypool territory with all that tuneless riffing. Yuck. But "You're Gonna Lose", "Ray-O-Vac", "Map of the City" = solid gold.

I've never paid any attention to the Afghan Whigs. Mostly because they're band name is so atrocious.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I was a huge fan in college, then at some point I taped over my copy of Black Love for some stupid reason. I just now dashed out and bought a new copy right before the record shop closed...

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I like 1965, but it's the only Whigs I really know. great cover, too. I take it I should seek the rest?

plus, I think the end of the album is great; Omerta is a fantastic high note, no?

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 13 May 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i really love 'thank you'; 'cats & dogs' will forever be my favourite Trux, but 'map of the city', 'ray o vac', 'horror james', and the last track are all f-f-f-f-f-fine.

1965? eh. some good tracks, some great, but *none* of the menace and mastery of gentlemen.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

nine years pass...

I think with mix of soul inflections with some modern production tricks, I think 1965 is kind of sounding oddly current most so of the records in the Afghan Whigs catalog. It's not my favorite or the best record by the Whigs, more that this fits in pretty well considering how many bands now are trying touchstones of 60s soul mixed in their rock/indie/pop sound.

earlnash, Saturday, 9 November 2013 06:46 (eleven years ago)

i kind of think 1965 is their best record

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 9 November 2013 14:23 (eleven years ago)

It isnt flawless at all imo but mostly it makes me think of what would have followed it up

its a weird last album to these ears. Definitely not one where everyones ready to hang it up

Master of Treacle, Saturday, 9 November 2013 16:43 (eleven years ago)

I don't know, in some ways its kind of a studio built creation with all of the extra musicians. It's more like some of Dulli's later projects than the earlier Afghan Whigs records.

earlnash, Saturday, 9 November 2013 23:28 (eleven years ago)

i also think it's the apotheosis of the whigs as a "funk band that happens to play rock," going full unsettled motown

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 9 November 2013 23:46 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, that's about right.
