After Gondry, Jonze & Cunningham, what's next on Directors Label, does anyone know?

On the Palm Pics site, they've got a bit about how there will be more in the series to be released this year. I haven't heard any more and I've emailed them a few times, but had no response. Does anyone know? Any guesses for which directors would likely fall under their limelight?
Thanks!

robot snare, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

floria sigismondi is my guess

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Hype Williams!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

not to sound like an ignoramus, but...who is floria sigismondi?

robot snare, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you too ignorant to use google?

http://www.floriasigismondi.com/

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

was hoping for a 101 ILM primer on her, actually, rather than a Google-a-thon. lazy, i guess. thanks anyway.

robot snare, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Hype already has a DVD... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000067G16/002-2862952-2982431?v=glance

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Romanek is next up.

He has two videos I love (Criminal and Hurt) and that Joel Peter Witkin ripoff, but I don't know what else they'll use to flesh it out.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Sigismondi has an impressive resume. And I didn't know she is Canadian!

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to see DVD collectins featuring Romanek, Hammer & Tongs, and Jonas Akerlund, but whoever's next will pale in comparison with the first three DVDs, which are sheer genius.

abegrand, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they're working on a Jonathan Glazer one, and possibly Anton Corbijn.

sander, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dayton and Farris?

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

A Mike Mills DVD is urgent and key. I'm intrigued by his movie Thumbsucker which I think is showing at Cannes.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

SHYNOLA for crying out loud

Alex & Martin and H5/Bardou-Jacquet/De Crecy would be my preferences

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Not sure if this was posted somewhere else here, but Directors Label has officially announced that the next batch will be released on September 13, 2005. This time, it is Mark Romanek, Anton Corbijn, Jonathan Glazer & Stéphane Sednaoui.

http://www.directorslabel.com/

has the details of each release.

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Neat. I didn't realize that Glazer directed so few videos, though.

L'Histoire d'Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm totally going to get the Mark Romanek one. Jay-Z, NIN, Michael & Janet playing space tennis, and EN VOGUE!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

which version of "one" did anton corbijn direct? weren't there like three different versions?

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

i'm also hoping for an eventual floria sigismondi release. and am kinda surprised there's not been one for jonas akerlund yet, there'd be no shortage of material for that set

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

These look a bit boring.

mope, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

I'd assume Corbijn did the black and white one with the buffalo or whatever.

Actor Sizemore fails drug test with fake penis (jingleberries), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

omg this is very exciting indeed.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

Grrr, no MIke Mills.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Corbijn did the one with the band in drag. Jay-Z's "99 Problems" commentary is great. As are a lot of the band commentaries, too: Jamiroqui, Flea, Fiona Apple, New Order (!) ...

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Anton Corbjin direct "Heart Shaped Box?"

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait, never mind, the website finally loaded in my browser...

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Now don't tell me that 2 years from now they're gonna release a boxed set with all four of these and a bonus DVD with videos that weren't included on these 4, like they did with the first 3. I'm still upset about that, as there's pretty much no way to purchase that bonus DVD without re-purchasing the first 3. Lame.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Wait, tell about this bonus DVD for the first three.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Here are the bonus DVD's contents:

Bonus 4th DVD Features
Spike Jonze
1. Y Control (uncut version) - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
2. Island In The Sun - Weezer
3. Invisible Boards (original short)
Michel Gondry
1. I Wonder - The Willowz
2. Ossamuch! - Kishu & Co. (original short)
Chris, Spike and Michel
1. Excerpts from a panel discussion.

Why the surprise at this marketing maneuver?

Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

The fact that there is still no Hype Williams one is proof that this whole series is bullshit. Hype wipes the floor (video-wise anyway) with all these guys.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

pure 100% agreement

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Hype Williams is less good and less worthy than Jonze or Gondry or Mills.

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

What about BRETT RATNER?

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I don't rate Hype that much, aside from the Missy and Busta work. Great set designs and slick editing but no more than the others, and generally more derivative than the other three. He is also the only one egocentric and trite enough to put his name at the start of his videos in corny 3d letters.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Hype Williams is less good and less worthy than Jonze or Gondry or Mills.

And I am not even a FAN of any of these (except maybe Mills and a grudging appreciation of Gondry's talent).

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Hype's got a poorer range too - only doing party videos or dramatic story clips for rnb/rap acts. I'd like to see him branch out, but why would he bother eh?

What's he done recently anyway?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I think there are probably only about 5 directors whose work would be worthwhile packaging in this way (and Cunningham isn't one of them).

Palm should do an anthology, I think.

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

"Hype Williams is less good and less worthy than Jonze or Gondry or Mills."

Bullshit. Also rent Belly fer crying out loud. You'll love it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure I would.

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

I'll rent Belly and you can rent Paperboys.

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Is Paperboys like Newsies cuz if so fuck no.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

The only defense for not having a Hype anthology (for me anyway) - is the possible difficulty of licensing his works.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Is this movie good? Or are you recommending it to torture me?

Fuck Hype did a video for like EVERY good song in the freakin' 90s. You guys are crazy.

http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Backstage/2220/hwvideos.html

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

He did a video for EVERY good song but they were all fucking identical!

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

(There's a Cash Money remix of PM Dawn?)

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

still, the new ones look pretty zzzzzzz

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Did Belly get ANY good reviews? I was warned off by a few.

What does it matter how good or bad the song is re director quality?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Thank you! Yes they do!

xp

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

"He did a video for EVERY good song but they were all fucking identical!"

They were not (although the guy did love pretty colors.) Anyway if your template rocks WTF would you want to change it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Goddamn that Hype filmograpgy is spectacular

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

yeah its fincher. don't get me started on that one.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

At first I thought it was a commercial for the Sharper Image.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

wtf, I pointed out in the first handful or responses to this thread that Hype Williams has his own DVD collection apart from this series and then a year later there's a long stupid debate about Hype vs. other directors.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

and now a month and a half later you're responding to it! the internet, crazy stuff.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

this is very good:

http://videos.antville.org/stories/1092573/

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

It wasn't stupid Al, it was a very good debate.

Is the video for Beck's 'Girl' by Gondry or Jonze?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Hype has his own DVD?

Damn, I kinda want that.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

"Hype has his own DVD?
Damn, I kinda want that."

Unfortunately it's not very good. :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

The Hot Hot Heat video is pretty good.

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Ick.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Haha I found the Avenue video amusing. It's def not great though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

What sites can I go to for watching new videos?

(besides the obvious, mark)

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

videos.antville.org is excellent

winamp's videos archives is also tremendous.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

here is the beck video that stevem was talking about. it's great:
boardsmag.com/screeningroom/musicvideos/1772/

and here's the commercial that inspired it, from the same company:
boardsmag.com/screeningroom/commercials/1584/

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

The only good grime videos I've seen are "I Luv U", "Dream", and "Ps and Qs" (a real low key charmer, that one). Oh, and "Wot Do You Call It?"! That is wicked hahaha!

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

ill post the roisin and roll deep so you can see them.

xpost adam you forgot pow!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

The "Typical Me" video is good. So is the original "When I'm Ere" (not the terrible XXX version.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Colonel Blimp again!

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Both "Hype Hype" videos are terrible unfortunately.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Alex, I have your Kano STICKER for you! I will give i to you at lunch.

(Do Americans say STICKER? Or DECAL, or something?)

xp-yes!

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

the guy who runs colonel blimp is rad. he loves his grime, and told me scandalous tings about sov.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

DON'T!

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

i was shocked, but then after i thought about it, i wasn't.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Was she a pre-teen slut like Chr1st1na r1cc1?

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

its more about what she is than what she was.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

fincher was going to do MI:3!!! now he's not :(

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

fincher spent a looooooooong time trying to get b3nj@m1n butt0n off the ground, but no studio would bite. the reason? he wouldn't do it for a budget of less than $150m!!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

what's that movie?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

isn't this nice?
boardsmag.com/screeningroom/musicvideos/1814/

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

I recall it being originally announced that the Hype Williams DVD was part of the inspiration for beginning this series. There are a lot of great video directors besides Hype who deserve a Directors Label DVD. I'm sure the people behind the series haven't forgotten him, or Jonas Akerlund, or Hammer & Tongs, or Dayton & Ferris, Evan Bernard, Paul Hunter, Jake Scott, Samuel Bayer, Mike Mills, blah blah blah and so on.

probably xpost, I was too lazy to read through the whole thing

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 15 July 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
dougal wilson is probably among my 5 favorite current directors. so fucking good. here's his brand new video for lcd's "tribulations":

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

the rapture poster one was shynola

jermaine (jnoble), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

he did dizzee's "dreams" and the streets' "fit but you know it", plus a few of my absolute favorite commercials

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

haha jermaine i thought that was a dis for a second

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah i def see the fit but you know it connection.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

the lcd video reminds a lot of dougal's boots commercial, which i posted a link to upthread

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

it's technically impressive as ever but conceptually lacking/not quite exciting enough i find.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
i now have the video for 'dr mabuse'
