Great songs never to have been officially released

If a band is big enough for long enough, then eventually everything gets released, even crappy, poorly-recorded vague sketches for songs, in the case of John Lennon. And yet occasionally a few gems slip through and never seem to see the official light of day.

Prime examples: Pink Floyd's 'Scream Thy Last Scream' and 'Vegetable Man'.

"Purple Paralellogram" Lemonheads
"Jesus Suck" Jesus and Mary Chain
"Cocksucker Blues" Rolling Stones

Though whether or not you could class them as 'great'...

The Cure - Ariel

Always blathering about Levitation, but Meanwhile Gardens 2 would have been pretty great.

Also the 'Yellow' Version of Primary by The Cure.

johnny marr, shaun ryder and bernard sumner wrote 'colours' together in 1990 but with one thing and another it never got recorded. it was quite a bg deal at the time, but see you had to make your own entertainment in those days.

primal scream "the orchard"

the game "the addicted man"

"Colours" was written by Donovan, back in the day. They never quite got round to recording it, or they did but needed one of theirs input. I guess they have lotsa spare time thesedays...

I have no idea if they're great, but I'd love to hear the 4 tracks made for Scott Walker's aborted late eighties album. Eno producing, Fripp on guitar. Eno wanted to release them, Walker said no.

The Tom Waits song "I'll Never Let Go Of Your Hand" is really great, but is only available in the movie American Hearts during the end credits (and no soundtrack was released).

Also Radiohead's "Big Ideas," which has been played live a few times.

Ariel was a b-side I thought? Cocksucker blues owns this thread.

I really like Bob Dylan's "Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues" on the Bootleg Series.

Speaking of Dylan, howbout "I Shall Be Released"?

nas - life is like a dice game

Havent' "I shall be released" and "talking john birch paranoid blues" both been officially released? In the latter case now, at least twice?

Scott CE (Scott CE), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

And isn't the title of the Dylan song incredibly ironic?

Sym (shmuel), Thursday, 13 May 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh, right you are, Sym! Citing "I Shall Be Released" was just a (dumb) joke on my part. I thought it was fairly obvious.

In future, I'll add an emoticon: ;)

The Beatles - Etcetera

Search C90: The Unheard Music

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 13 May 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Teeny - Nope, it was played in '82 on some radio session and enjoyed myth status ever since. Think 'Lament'
