THE DONDA MANIFESTO IN ITS ENTIRETY
I love being back at my fashion office learning and creating. It’s so challenging and fun and I’m surrounded by amazing people. They so you only live once but every time I come to work I feel like I’m starting a second life. You guys might think I have some type of backing for my line but I don’t.I did the first fashion show out of my own pocket and used the money I made touring to follow my passion.I’ve been working at this for 8 years now …from the first offers to do urban clothing lines that I turned down…To begging Bape to do my line and never making any real headway…To having an office in LA that was shut down after the “MTV” moment along with my tour with GAGAI moved to Japan for one month after that and designed every night in my room… I had this opportunity to intern at Fendi and was also..…offered a position to at Versace wich I could not take due to my contract with LV which was for 2 years…I moved to Rome after I left Japan and worked at Fendi for 4 months under cover … I was there to give ideas for the men’s collectionI snuck to Giuseppe Zanotti Factory still under contract and learned to design woman’s shoes for 2 years before my first show in ParisAfter doing the first LV collection I was sure I would get a second shot to create but was never given the opportunityI designed a sneaker called the YEEZY with Nike. I’m “allowed” to design 1 pair of sneakers every 2 years. I have more ideas…Early 2011 … I moved to Paris and opened a small design studio… the language barrier was quite difficult…I still don’t have a Paris VAT number to this day… I don’t know what a VAT but every time I asked why we didn’t have fabrics they said…… it was because of the VAT.In Paris I met many great people in design including the master Azzedine Alaia… Azzedine even came by my studio one day : )))This was the greatest feeling to stand in his presence in my embarrassingly small Paris studio in a courtyard opposite CollateI remember being 5 years old picking and my mother taking me with her shopping at the discount fur spotsShe said I would always point to the most expensive furs even as a child LOLIt’s something about making clothing that always brings me back to that point. For the first 16 or 17 years of my life the only thing…I knew about my woman’s clothing was what my Mom would wear. I guess some critics would joke that I still don’t know anything LOLMy Mom would wear blue jeans with a fur and an embellished “Cosby Show” sweater : ) to pick me up from school… the teachers said I couldn’t focus… I used to get kicked out of class for bringing dirty mags and drawing Nikeys in 4th gradeBeing a celebrity has afforded me many opportunities but has also boxed me in creatively.I was just discussing becoming the creative director for the Jetson movie and someone on the call yelled out.. you should do a Jetsons tour! This just happened a few hours ago. I was very insulted of course becuase for anyone that’s seen the Watch the Throne Tour…Or Coachella or Glow in the Dark or Runaway.. you know I have real ideas…I appreciate having the most nominations at the Grammies but I feel so conflicted by the fact that award shows sometimes are completely……illogicalGood logic tells me smile Kanye… the world likes you again… red or blue pill? … aaaaand Swallow lolI wouldn’t have the prestige I have if it wasn’t partially for the Grammies validation and I honor that….hmmmmm what to wear… here I go again… Yeezy the trend setter or complete fucking fashion victim … the verdict is still outThis is just a train of thought .. but figure it’s better to read than trained thoughtsWhat good is fame and prestige if you can’t use it to help people… I want to help by doing what I know how to do best .. createI have started a new company and I’m so excited about the name…. it’s got the best name ever of all companies of all time!!!….The name of the company is DONDADONDA is a design company which will galvanize amazing thinkers and put them in a creative space to bounce there dreams and ideas…I used to blog all the time an fit was a way to get my opinion out…Dr Dre redesigned headphones and made more impact off of one product.I am assembling a team of architects, graphic designers, directors musicians, producers, AnRs, writers, publicist, social media experts…app guys, managers, car designers, clothing designers, DJs, video game designers, publishers, tech guys, lawyers, bankers, nutritionist …doctors, scientist, teachers…DONDA will be comprised of over 22 divisions with a goal to make products and experiences that people want and can afford…I want to put creatives in a room together with like minds that are all waaaay doper than meWe want to help simplify and aesthetically improve everything we see hear, touch, taste and feel.…To dream of, create, advertise and produce products driven equally by emotional want and utilitarian need.. To marry our wants and needs.DONDAThis will all take time but I wanted everyones to know what I really care about… I care about people. I care about my fans..I care about people who have never heard of me… There are over 7 billion people on the planet now…It’s something about coming from music that makes me so optimistic… Music travels and is not limited to only the wealthy.Sometimes my grammar is wrong but my thinking is right : )My mom was an English teacher so I know she sends an SMDH from heaven : )5:18 am in London… My dreams keep me wokeThe Watch the Throne tour was a small example of what a Donda Experience can be…I’m currently working on a new 7 screen experience pic.twitter.com/4XmQmCL3This one of our projects to be released this year called 2016 OLYMPIC’s … It’s a semi sic-fi since 2016 is only 4 years away : )We would also like’ to design the MTV awardsWe’re taking everything 10 steps at a time LOL!I wanted to put this in the world in hopes that the people who can actually make a difference will stand up and reach outWe can collectively effect the world trough design. We need to pick up where steve jobs left offWhen I said wealthy I wanted to point out there are so many billionaires in the world that can come together and help to redesign itHelp education. School systems were designed to turn people into factory workers.Schools should be designed to prep human beings for real life.Spike Jonze and I want to do a Summer school that tries new forms of cuuriculimMath classes should teach addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, accounting and money management aaaaaand cut!!! ….UNLESS YOU’RE A MATH MAJOR!!!! Kids you should be able to take majors starting in grammar school like how it is at performing art schoolsInstead of kicking kids out of schools for using there iPhones… why not promote it? Allow kids to use search engines to do test…like the real WORLD!!! Give kids the amount of test they would have in a year in one day but they have to get everything perfect…Some kids have better memories than others… what about emotional IQs… what about kids who do bad in school because of how bad there..…surroundings are? I meant to say their…excuse me… I just get excited at the possibilities… the more excited I get… the more grammatical errors you’ll see…We need to take what Michael Jackson felt and Mcqueen and Steve Jobs and we need make things better…When me and Jay toured… ever night I peered into the audience astonished by the different walks of life that came to support us.The adrenaline is running… I don’t know if I can even get to sleep now… From Wall street to the London riots to Chicago murders…I sit everyday and ask what can I do to make a difference…I know this is not a very rapper thing to say but I haven’t bought a new car or piece of jewelry in about 2 years…I invest every dime back into creativity… hiring amazing creatives paying for flights, offices … etc…My area of expertise is in music, my passion is in music design film and products… my strength is connectivity…There are so many broken systems from the economy to school systems jail systems… we need experts for this…We need scientist and top world designers to directly affect governments. If anyone would like to reach out email us at contactDO✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧I just wanted to share what’s been on my mind…“If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. ….…But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.” – George Bernard Shaw

It's been kind of amazing to me to see just how much people *hate* this guy these days. It's not hard to tell why he's disliked, I mean constant foot-in-mouth moments, the Swift/Beck incidents, his egotism; he knows what he's doing, it's all calculated.
But I recall the reactions being more "God, what a jackass" back during the Swift incident (which I also said), but now he's generating Nickleback levels of hate. What with the recent petition to remove him from the Glastonbury lineup that got 90,000 sigs (not going to happen), people are acting like he's the Antichrist. I don't even think he got this level of vitriol during his legendary "Bush doesn't care about white people" quote (his best moment IMO).

The confederate stuff was “provocative” and “iconoclastic” or at least it could be interpreted like that. The lyrics to black skinhead are ugly but they’re mostly critical of white supremacy: “middle america packed in / come to see me in my black skin.”
That album, like others, juxtaposed these songs where he sounded angry, self-assured, callous, and misogynistic (that has always been part of his music) with songs that were vulnerable and contrite, where he admits that rap star persona is a fragile facade. “Hold my liquor” is a classic — this messy song about his ex’s aunt yelling at him and him getting so frazzled he gets in a fender bender in the driveway.
I think his ability to be vulnerable — even, at times, humiliate himself — is what drew people in. He was flawed in ways that felt relatable, and he struggled with self loathing, but he also believed in himself. *and you can believe in yourself too* was the message i took away as a high schooler.
― treeship., Wednesday, 28 January 2026 00:53 (two months ago)
He meant *a lot* to *many* millennials, especially those who struggled with mental health. Like me, that is one example. So this whole “i am a nazi” and “i love hitler” stuff has been hard to take to say the least.
― treeship., Wednesday, 28 January 2026 00:57 (two months ago)
He was flawed in ways that felt relatable
You'll have to explain this. I didn't think so after 2010. I liked him 2004-2008 because he wasn't afraid to sound like a dork. Like many dorks of all colors and sexualities he had megalomaniacal tendencies, as we learned, and he got way less interesting.

The sense I got, at least from the New York story about his deconstruction of that house, is that he is pretty manipulative and abusive to the people who work for him. He’s probably alienated anyone who wanted the best for him.
― Loggins & Messiah (President Keyes), Wednesday, 28 January 2026 01:02 (two months ago)
I kind of get in my feelings about it. I think about someone like Kanye who brought so much incredible music to my life and — at any point really — I would have been perfectly fine with him never making another note of music ever again if it meant someone who's art I loved could be healthy and happy somewhere. Now multiply that by all the fans of the Britneys and MJs and Amy Winehouses and Mac Millers and whoever else is just caught in their own little insular machine while we all look helplessly on. It's really sad and it never stops being sad!
― EsBeeKid (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 28 January 2026 01:06 (two months ago)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t a lot of this behavior start happening after his mom passed?
― Heez, Wednesday, 28 January 2026 01:14 (two months ago)
I mean, his Yeezys tour merch (2013-14) was full of Confederate iconography, and his verse in “Ns in Paris” always stands out as especially degrading (more typical than an exception), so it’s hard to imagine treating those things as just playing around with words and images.
well, tastelessness has been part of kanye’s shtick from the very beginning, go all the way back to “the new workout plan” or the michael jackson joke on “slow jamz” or whatever. and obviously that also transitioned into outright offensiveness at various points, people called out the misogyny on ‘yeezus’, he said the stuff about taylor swift etc. but at a certain point it just sorta stopped being contained within or connected to the music, his offensiveness began to have no function in relation to his art, he was just sticking his hand on the stove over and over
in 2016 he released life of pablo, it’s also when he tweeted bill cosby innocent in all caps. someone told me a long time ago that kanye had to be talked out of selling bill cosby innocent merch on that tour, which is where he performed while suspended over the crowd. that tour culminated with him rambling semi-coherently for 20 mins in sacramento and being hospitalized and the tour being cancelled. he has not toured since then btw
i believe at that point he was either put on meds or put back on meds — 2017 was when he was in wyoming and sort of laying low, he produced all those albums for other artists etc. but by june 2018 he had gone on tmz to make his comments about slavery, at which point some people in his circle, very likely the kardashians, leaked to TMZ that he had stopped taking his meds. to me that’s about when things started getting very weird and have never really gotten back on track

I agree with that.
But I think that outwardly and explicitly embracing fascist and antisemitic positions is different than anything those other people “did,” even MJ, whose crimes were more personal and despicable, in many ways, but didn’t lend credence to an ideological position that *literally wants people like J0rdan, me, and many others in this thread* to die.

when people think a severely mentally ill person saying nazi shit is the same as a person with presence of mind saying it, I hope to correct that: because it is wrong.
i appreciate that perspective. but i would add that if the person is now actively dealing with his illness and is, at least for now, in a clearer space, then it isn't unfair to ask him to not only acknowledge the damage and the pain he caused along the way, but to truly confront it, to sit with it, to understand it. and, as a very very public figure who wants to continue being one, to demonstrate to the public that he's done that. an ad in the wall street journal on the eve of a record release is not that. it is not even in the universe of that.

I do understand having some empathy for someone who is clearly experiencing severe mental illness and surrounded by people drafting off of his fame and enabling his symptoms to a large degree. I hope he figures his shit out as much as he can and finds actually trustworthy people to look after him. But also I feel like we have seen so many instances of him just being a fucking prick to tons of people, in ways that aren't as over-the-top as the Nazi shit, but probably do more damage on a personal level. And I don't get the sense that he's ever going to address the awful stuff he's done that didn't make millions of people write him off. So it's hard to get excited for a big redemption arc where the cartoonishly evil shit can be blamed on mental illness and the people who got treated like dirt for the sake of his artistic genius are left in the dust.
― JoeStork, Wednesday, 28 January 2026 02:31 (two months ago)
I think my posts came off in a way that might make me seem like a horrible callous shit.
Here’s the thing: I have been friends with people who have had mental health issues, addiction issues, etc. I have had them myself.
But the incident that made me really cold to the mental health/fascism/antisemitism arguments was genuinely frightening. We were friends with a guy, we lived on the same land project as he did, and he was a character— he had some years in prison under his belt, and ties to violent motorcycle gangs, etc. Like most white dudes who have spent some time in prison, he had some fashy tattoos. He waved them away as part of his past, and we believed him, because hey, why else would he be cool with a racially mixed queer couple?
One night he was coming down off some tweak, and he said something threatening to T. I told him he couldn’t speak to T that way, and he picked up a chair and swung it at my head. He called me and T every name in the book, we had to lock him out of the main kitchen on the compound to get him to leave us alone.
For the next week, before we got him kicked off the property for good, he stalked our cabin at night. We heard him, and he made himself known, calling our names and asking us to come out and fight. We kept a loaded shotgun by the bed.
The guy was mentally ill, and had addiction issues, and tried to kill me and my person. Forgive me if I don’t have a lot of tolerance or room for forgiveness for the guy I am talking about, or for Kanye, who certainly has enough resources to deal with his issues. I want everyone to be thriving and healthy, and I want the best for Kanye, but I don’t think that the mental health and addiction issues he has are reasonable or good cover for his obvious bigotry.

fwiw I am not angry at anyone here— i wish that the experience i detailed above hasn’t led me to be possibly cruel in cases such as Kanye’s, and i wrestle with that at times. but i also have to protect myself and my loved ones from people who want to harm us. anyway, i care about all of you, too, and know that the level of my polemical side can get hot. i just… really hate Nazis.

i'll make sure to remember that :)

I absolutely love everybody here too! I too far too and ascribed motivations to people without absorbing what you and others are truly saying and letting anger get the better. But if I may, I still think any residual goodwill to him from his past work should be long forgotten by this point.

“I went too far”

Ugh this literally just played out in real time in my life. One of my last childhood friends, who I stuck by through an awful heroin addiction, years and years of addiction and mental health struggles, while all of our friends dropped him and cut him off, just said, referring to all the violence against protestors in MN, “fuck around and find out.”
I’ve been in the hospital for three weeks now, unable to walk, and our text about music and “the good ol days” helped keep me afloat. He’s been encouraging me and helping me stay positive. Now he says that.
I genuinely feel heartbroken. Like someone just died. But I think this is bridge too far. I don’t know. It’s feels very raw at the moment. But damn.

Mfer broke into my house, stole my guitar and pawned it, yet still this feels like a much bigger betrayal

That's rough Heez :(

That'a sad. I feel very glad I have not had to confront this sort of thing in friends and family, not really. In fact, I'm not sure how I would navigate that sort of conflict, and I find it a relief that I've not had to.

My only contribution to this conversation is “I hope Kanye leaves public discourse and gets lasting assistance managing his mental illness.”
I have no desire to hear from him or hear about him again. I think it would be a net benefit for him to live a private life and for us to never see him in the spotlight again.

I just moved to Phnom Penh 6 months ago and we meet a lot of non American white ppl bc we live in an expat community and our kids make friends so you have to hangout with parents. Everytime I meet them, I’ve realized, I try to say something to gauge their politics. I tend to say, we didn’t leave bc of Trump but it was damn good timing!” The reactions have been unfortunate. One Australian dude was like, oh but it’s been great for dollar. Ok fuck yourself. One actually works for ICE! I had no idea ICE was operating in Cambodia. So fuck him too. It seems like there’s two sets of expats. Those that came with orgs trying to help the country and those who came to live like kings in a poor country. I’m not gonna choose my kids friends but it would be cool to have a buddy or two.
Ok sorry I will stop posting my personal stuff on the Kanye west thread

FWIW, I got into an online fight with a Vietnamese dude who was a social media connection to one of my Vietnamese friends, and he turned out to be a far-right schmuck who disingenuously "hated" Trump but only for his character - he was clearly all-in on his policies because he was so warped by his hatred for the Communists that he backed anything that was considered the ideological opposite. You'll find people like that in any part of the world that has a history with Communist regimes.
But apologies, back to the thread topic.

DJP otm. I can have some sympathy for kanye as an individual, but as a public figure he needs to disappear for a long time and not get the attention that fuels all this

I generally believe there ought to be a way back for celebs but once you release a song called "Heil Hitler" I feel like it oughta be over for you permanently

i'm with DJP i'm just so sick of even thinking about this guy, we've all devoted far too much time to it already

I think the meta conversation about mental health and accountability is way more interesting than Kanye West's specific case and could go to further interesting places if we stopped including him in it altogether...but then this is the Kanye West thread.

he surely has enough money to have a nice quiet life now and is not producing any music of interest so no reason to even consider him

This entire sentence — every word — has been true for at least a decade, and I'd argue longer than that.

Unfortunately this is the same problem as when Huffpost said they were only going to report on Donald Trump in the Entertainment section back in 2015, because his campaign was not serious--we can decide people are not worth paying attention to, but they find ways to force you to pay attention.
