(['triple optics' > this new one > 'the platform'] < 'work the angles') = holding down the dilated singles legacy for real.

And what impresses me is that, although it's the most "single-y" song on the album, it's by no means the best hook. That would have to be Live on Stage, or Proper Propaganda, or Clockwork.

I always found Dilated to be the solid middle of the road underground- flavored hip hop.. but thats the problem.. everything might be consistently dope or whatever but I need some extra spark to get me hooked. The Platform was ok but it grew a little samey and relentless with its "edgy traditionalism" style. So now.. I havent heard the new album. Supposedly its more of the same... but better. Whats this mean? Should i hear it?

Oh and 'Worst Comes to Worst' is fine but its not getting me particularly excited.

live on stage has a terrible hook, it sounds like it was produced by 88 keys or something. honda, how can you like anticon and not dilated? i don't understand that at all.

Well, the vocal hook on Live on Stage may not be that hot, but I love the horns (or 'horns', as the case may be). That track was the first thing I heard from the album, over the pa in a store the week before the album came out, and at the time it was just exploding with energy.

Well... I must have said somewhere I liked Anticon. I'm not terribly enthusiastic about them either... but I did have, lets say, a moment with the "Music for the advancement of hip hop" compilation. I was attracted to the oddball audacity of Dose-1 or even Sole and their misfti roles in the hip hop community. At the time I think I bought into all the post-beatnik pretentions (or brilliance if you want) and the sarcastic cynicism that runs through their music. Anyways.. that flamed burned on through Deep Puddle, through Them and the BoomBip/ Circle album, and stopped right around clouddead and that uninteresting Giga-single. Lately I havent heard anything from them I've liked much.

Do I like Anticon more than Dilated? I don't know, but come to think of it, I've always been a botch-up of a hip hop fan. I should probably hear "Expansion Team" and figure out whats what here.

time constraints why i hate music biz / i counterpunch clocks, pay no attention what time it is / chop shit, bend notes, clear no samples / drop my thoughts quick on sony audio handheld / delve and breaks heat will take it to the streets / what up to rhet and carlos, all peeps at fat beats / street sweep, strip the lock after we rock / the world is in my hand but i'm in pandora's box

Ethan I found an "Off the Books" 12" yesterday. The instrumental sounds great at 45. :) Then I put "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" acapella at 45 over that and it's fucked UP

taking sides: dilated people vs. dead prez

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

when dead prez are good they're better than dilated, but when they're bad they're SO MUCH worse. dilated only occasionally go down to a certainly level of shit and just stop there but prez wallow in it and make compost. and i'd rather dance to dilated.

two months pass...
I didn't like the Dilated single when I first heard it, but then it was on CD:UK this morning and I realized the beat had been nestled in my brain pleasantly for three months. It sounded really good.

HHG: Can you take us through the making of an Alchemist beat?

A: Usually I turn the lights down and I’ll put on a record. First I usually stand on my head and I get the blood rushing into my brain because it gets the ideas rushing more. So I’ll stand on my head and I’ll wait for something to catch me on the record or my face is so purple that I have to stand up. It’s good. It’s almost like a high. I’ll find a sound and I’ll go from there. I pretty much just zone out and there really isn’t any method to the madness. I’ll find drum sounds anywhere. I’ll bang pots and pans into the microphone or smash metal cans. I can make my kicks. How did I make a kick? Oh yeah, I remember, I made a kick by turning the record player up really loud and just banging on the turntable and you get an 808 sound. It’s pretty fresh. I stole it from watching Numark on stage with Jurassic 5. I’ll make the kicks myself. It’s pretty much just acting like a complete asshole.

HHG: That’s awesome.

A: Yeah. They don’t understand. And I eat a lot of matzo brie. Matzo brie is the shit. People like to eat it with syrup and salt and that’s wack. I eat it with syrup, pancake style. That shit is pretty good. And Bottlecaps candy is pretty good too. Bottlecaps are really good.

HHG: And standing on your head.

A: I’m telling you, if you haven’t tried it, put on a record and just stand on your head and I’ll bet you as the blood rushes, because when you sit down, the blood ends up going to your feet. You got a lot of blood in your legs and you need the blood to get to your brains actually because you need to use your brain to make a beat. You let the blood go there and it’s kind of ill. It’s a technique. It’s a trick of the trade. It’s real talk. Let me add a disclaimer. If anybody passes out, I have nothing to do with that. Make sure you come up for air if you get dizzy. It’s a special Alchemist technique. I would never want to harm a fan intentionally. I want them to make some hot shit. Go and stand on your head. I just want them to do it at their own risk.
