What the fuck? What's on it? Is it any good? Should Indie film directors be required to get some kind of liscence to produce records?

whispery horseshit

M. Matos, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's very beautiful.

ethan, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What IS it? are there guitars? Drum Machines? Glitches?

turner, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

acoustic guitar, some simple drum loops, occasional vocals, 'atomosphere'. it doesn't sound like anything else i own, i can't really describe it. it's just very beautiful.

ethan, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only sound I want to hear out of Vincent Gallo is him screaming in pain and dying.

So the answer is no.

Nicole, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have to say, Nicole's vision is most compelling.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didn't know a thing about Vincent Gallo and had to have it explained (by a mate who disliked him intensely) to me. I always just thought of him as "that bloke in Suzy's bathroom." ;-)

I must say, however, that the idea of pop music created by pretentious indie film directors is far more appealing than the idea of pop music created by choreographer/dancers or soft porn stars or teenage dollypops. Must everyone else get a lisence to persue a career in music if they already have a first occupation? What a brilliant idea.

The music Gallo did for his film "Buffalo 66" is very nice - low key, girly whispery vocals (by Gallo, or Girlo as we should call him), plucked guitars and stuff. And "Buffalo 66" is very likeable as well, a sad-happy kind of film. I gather Gallo is obnoxious in real life, but that's never been a good reason to hate an artist's art.

DV, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I found Buffalo 66 to be pretty irritating, so it's not just a matter of hating him because he's obnoxious. I just don't care for what he does at all, and the fact that he does seem like a dick probably doesn't help.

Terrible record, feel betrayed by warp, maybe there trying to sweeten up the indie film scene to get pop promos made on the cheap, the guardian gave it a great rubbishing when it came out,,,
"It's proggy, inept, embarrassing and pretentious. In fact, it's terrible"

jk, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's not typical warp fare, for sure, but it's still listenable and good, if you have an open mind.

todd burns, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

your mind would have to be so far open that its contents would seep out like silt in order to like gallo's piece of shit

M. Matos, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I saw Buffalo 66, I can't have an open mind, he irritates the hell out of me, despite having been in a couple of Claire Denis films that I really, really like.
It's actually quite near the point where the degree of everyone else's dislike of Mr. Gallo is so high, I almost think well of him now.
I would much rather indie filmmakers made records than indie musicians made films, except for Harmony Korine who should do neither.

daria gray, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But if he did what would it sound like? Tortured cat sounds?

turner, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you really want to know what an album by Harmony Korine would sound like, it's just an order away.

Vic Funk, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, it's not that far off from that "strangled cat sound". From what I remember, there's some detuned guitar mangling, some moaning, and some other stuff. It's not bad, really - probably on the same level as the Vincent Gallo album, I'd imagine. Other Music had some kind words to say about it (and given that Omplatten, the label that released the album, is co-owned by OM employees, it's not shocking). This record isn't for one's pure entertainment, though. I think Billy Bob's country record is a prime candidate for that.

David Raposa, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

more like muffled strangled-cat sounds...

(sorry, couldn't resist. will stop now)

M. Matos, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
