What bands have a similar sound and feel as Animal Collective circa their newest Sung Tongs (do not say Of fucking Montreal)...
You can name album, song, or simply just a band...

A Trane at 4 O'Clock, Thursday, 20 May 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

See Bob Drake's The Skull Mailbox. Slightly different angle, but I think AC could end up a lot like this at some point.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 20 May 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

My wife said Baka Beyond.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 20 May 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

some This Heat stuff

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 20 May 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't heard the new one, but a.r. kane's "69" kind of reminds me of them.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

anything with way too much reverb/delay...

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

also I don't think that, even in their wildest dreams, AC could sound like This Heat.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

when i first heard animal collective it reminded me of some tape loop drone guitar piece off sebadoh's wasted pieces cassette.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 20 May 2004 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

indie fuxor.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 20 May 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i have been completely unable to tell if i will like AC from anybody's description of them. i suppose i might just have to buy some.

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Thursday, 20 May 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought, based on other people's raves and other things I'd read, that I'd like them but I was pretty disappointed with their live set.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i really really really like the campfire songs album. lofi acoustic guitar drone/pop. gooorgeous.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 20 May 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

gooorgeous

boo-urns

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Thursday, 20 May 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

definitely, definitely a link betw. recent animal collective work and tyrannosaurus rex, especially in the vocal work (thinking "debora" and "unicorn" type stuff)...i don't think i would have gotten into the rex stuff had it not been for animal collective. same of course goes for incredible string band.

i don't really get a lot of the references to brazillian music (maybe some os mutantes stuff) in relation to animal collective, but certainly caetano veloso's "araca azul" album bears comparison.

i also thought i saw a little similarity with the raincoats' "odyshape" album.
of course the homosexuals, particularly the george harassment record and songs like "prestel" and the venceremos cassette are another touchstone.

naturemorte, Thursday, 20 May 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

if only the vocalist or ists from animal collective had interesting voices like bolan.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 20 May 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

don't know but i know the records one of them at least has gotten me into:
le orme-ad gloriam
third ear band-(st?)
fairport convention-liege and lief
jaylib-champion sound

and another recommended the author alain robbe-grillet to me...

naturemorte would appear to know them as well, or be doing his homework. they love the stuff he's cited i know for fact.

duke agence, Thursday, 20 May 2004 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

or 'her' homework, i have no idea i just realized
*whoops*

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

pick out some appalachian folk from the harry smith anthology.
pick out black dice - beaches and canyons
find two stereos
play one album on each stereo concurrently.
voila...

I like.

simon 803 (simon 803), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard 3EB and Ad Gloriam in Sung Tongs and thought it was just my imagination. haha.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The Beatles.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

the music isn't half bad on sung tongs, but sometimes it is half bad. I could do without the vocals completely. do they have any good all-instrumental stuff?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

campfire songs is mostly instrumental, very nice

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

sung tongs has a kinda nu-goofball vibe to it. do danielson fans like the animal collective? well, they probably like all collectives.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

'collective' is my new least favorite word. Every band with more than two members is a 'collective' now - bullshit. Food Not Bombs is a collective, Beastie Boys are not. It's the kind of word I know Lisa Simpson hates, too, because it's so meaningless and 'buzzworthy' - ugh

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

ENSEMBLE

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

a fellow enemy of platitudes. I'm her fan

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

fun hater.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The new one keeps reminding me of Faun Fables. But then so does Joanna Newsome, and Joanna Newsome in no sense reminds me of Animal Collective.

nabiscothingy, Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

They fucked up changing their name from Avey Tare & Panda Bear--from the fanciful to functional.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm getting tired of folk music already and it's not even June

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

folk music goes better with winter.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

folk music = winter
hip-hop = summer
bluegrass = spring
techno = fall

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

noise?

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

noise is for all seasons!

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

GEETA OTM!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the answer to this question is emmet otter's jugband

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(the strokes are the riverbottom nightmare band)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

My clogged toilet sounds a lot like Animal Collective...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

your shit is heavy with reverb, Alex?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Depends on what I had for dinner the night before.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

you have a weird ass, dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

`Tis the cross I must bear, i suppose.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

you're bearing something, but it ain't a cross.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Os Mutantes

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Thursday, 20 May 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Animal Collective's been listening to Mauricio Kagel or they watched Jodorowsky's Fando y Lis

They should change their name to Sunburned Hand of Emmanuel Lewis

I like them

Marcus Barr (Marcus Barr), Friday, 21 May 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

OHMIGOD Le Orme Ad Glorium is amazing. I WISH the Animal Collective sounded like this record (esp. the absolutely godhead title track.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 21 May 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Animal Collective Jyrk.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 21 May 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ten months pass...
this new EP reminds me a lot of His Name is Alive's King of Sweet or parts of Home is in Your Head...

john'n'chicago, Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

JOOST VISSER

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

o man. I love Joost Visser. I will have to dig that out tonight. I miss Ajax records.

mitch dub (ano ano), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Grizzly Bear kind of reminded me of Animal Collective when I saw them a couple weeks ago. (Haven't heard the record, though.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

beat happening!

bro jackson (he knows) (deangulberry), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

my understanding of GB vs. AC is that GB is just more pop. more straightforward tunes. Beat Happening? craaaaazy. that's a funny comparison.
I think the new maroon five remix track is totally animal collective!

breezy, Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

more straightforward tunes.

Hmmm, I def. didn't get that impression seeing them live. I mean, more pop than Animal Collective pre-Sung Tongs, maybe.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't seen them live. just since my roommate compared the two and said animal collective was more frenetic? less mellow or something? i dunno what I'm talking about. i'll report back once i've seen them live. i've seen AC live a bunch of times. i'ts h ard to k inda even say one thing about them as that their set changes so drastically from show to show.

breezy, Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Animal Collective are definitely more frenetic. But Grizzly Bear's mellowness doesn't always equate to POP.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

hey where did you see them? I think it's time for me to see AC again. i feel like it's been long enough that they are doing something new agian. but now they only play in HUGE venues (actually not always true). I gotta go see both. i have a feeling I'll like GB live, and I'll always be an AC fan. I heard M.i.a live was a total bust though....my friend was at SXSW and saw her and said she just rappe dover pre done beats. kareoke style? tis true, mellow isn't always pop. but the album is pretty pop. obviously it's a bit different live.

breezy, Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Grizzly Bear at SXSW, actually -- they played an afternoon showcase with my band. It was mostly a Chicago showcase, except for them (although I guess one of them is from Chicago, maybe?).

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah? what band are you in? I heard SXSW was just too hectic. My friend said it was impossible to enjoy any band there because there was just too much going on....hopefully you had a good show!

breezy, Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

i like this dude: www.myspace.com/fiveng

i think it sounds like i imagine animal collective to sound like, given that i don't really listen to animal collective (tried with mpp, not really feelin' it, and i've only heard a handful of other tracks)

hey trader joe's! i've got the new steely dan. (Jordan), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

john. a resident of chicago., Thursday, 14 January 2010 04:10 (sixteen years ago)

fifteen years pass...

Pre-Animal Collective records that really really completely remind me of them. I guess there are famous albums people would mention (Smiley Smile, Satanic Majesties, Olias of Sunhillow) but these feel less obvious:

Thompson Twins - Oumma Aularesso (Animal Laugh) (1981)
It's based on a Sierra Leone folk song but my god it's strong with this one

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpWUtcAxghE

Kaya - Gran ter (1996)
So I guess Mauritius Rastafari music is an unspoken part of Anco's kernel?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzT6vOBjNMQ

Perry Farrell - And Me (2001)
I guess the band sort of already existed by this point but it's especially solo Panda Bear this puts me in mind of

you can see me from westbury white horse, Tuesday, 11 November 2025 19:47 (four months ago)

oooh yes I can definitely hear Panda over the Kaya track. could almost buy that's actually him on the Perry Farrell track. on that one I think it's more the odd mixing choices and use of reverb.

one track that always struck me as proto-AC is "Schooldays" by Gentle Giant...which dates back to '72

Panda Bear vocals on this and you have Tomboy, maybe even more spacey than Tomboy??

Whole album is a blast, favourite cover of "strangers in the night" starts thr album

That Thompson Twins joint is remarkable

Now read it backwards. (dog latin), Wednesday, 12 November 2025 09:06 (four months ago)

Good examples here. Re:King Biscuit Time, I've always thought the Beta Band's It's Not Too Beautiful was their most Anco-foreshadowing moment
