You want suggestions of good compilations? Or you want to make your own compilation from others' song suggestions?

You could do a lot worse than trying to find or download all the songs on this series of compilations:

Pretty much the building blocks of early hip-hop. You'll recognize many of the songs even if the titles look unfamiliar...

Eugene Blacknell & The New Breed - Gettin' Down

that is a killer tune

hector (hector), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:10 (nineteen years ago) link

charles wright - 65 Bars And A Taste Of Soul
willie hutch - the mack
the meters - chicken strut
herbie hancock - watermellon man

Trust me on that.

Nate: That's Billy (Sugar Billy) Garner, not Gardener. But you are right to put "I Got Some" at the beginning of the mix: It's the funkiest song I've ever heard, and I've heard more funky songs than most of you have had hot dinners. Gang Starr sampled it on "BYS" to stunning effect, as well.

nineteen years pass...

Some days, James Brown's heavy funk period rules my world. What are the best various artist funk compilations out there inspired by the Godfather?

If you don’t already know them, JBs Funky People cd comps are great, which is the JBs backing up others in the Godfathers orbit.

It's not all JB-influenced, but Rhino's What It Is box (a 4-disc Nuggets-esque deep dive into Warner Music's Funk holdings) is very much worth grabbing if you can get it for a good price.

I also literally just picked up a copy of James Brown's Funky Divas, a generous two-disc set issued as part of Polydor's Deep Dive '90s JB reissue campaign that spotlights his work with Vicki Anderson/Marva Whitney/Lyn Collins etc. It's OOP, but available on streaming.
