right now i think its soilent green's sewn mouth secrets. any one else have an opinion

marathon luny binge, Sunday, 18 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i used to listen to metallica's 'ride the lightning' every day when i delivered my papers. so it is either that or maybe iron maiden's 'number of the beast' which were my faves when i was just a dumb metal-loving 12 year old.

keith, Sunday, 18 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Keith's approach in that the one album or so you initially come across at that youthful stage inevitably becomes The Metal Album That Converts You, Man. For my sins it was the polished sheen (but that still rocked hard -- at least for me) of _Pyromania_ by Def Leppard, when I was a dumb metal-loving 12 year old myself. ;-)

But now that I'm a man, theoretically -- *thinks* the Misfits' _Walk Among Us_, which I admittedly just relistened to, or Carcass' _Symphonies of Sickness_, which is and remains utterly hilarious, intentionally so.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does Def Leppard really count, Ned?

Josh, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't own any metal albums. Metal is shit.

Well actually no, but it's interesting how cool it seems to be to like metal now - after general hating in the 80s and grudging reappraisals in the 90s, it's become the reverse-equivalent of country music, i.e. in the way that music fans say they like "anything except country", EVERY music fan suddenly is or was 'into metal' or if they're not they sure as shit won't say so.

Anyway, I own hardly any metal. "Appetite For Destruction" is what I like best out of what I've got.

Tom, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Since I'm a true veteran of metal :) There is really one possible answer: "Reign in Blood" by Slayer. Unbelievable that it's already 14 years old but still reduces all nu-metal to whiny kids with angry faces. The riffs, the ugly artwork, The Voice, the crazy speed and cool tasteless lyrics. Brilliant just brilliant.

Omar, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In the Woods - Omnio

DJ Martian, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That Black Sabbath one with the pilots on the cover...don't remember its name but I used to loved it in my callow youth.

Wille Casper, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Soilent Green is made of people!!!" (Sorry -- had to do it.)

Paranoid. It still sounds excellent.

Andy, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to know who the first femaile to answer this thread will be.

Personal Tie for...

Back In Black - AC/DC Appetite For Destruction - G'n'R

JM, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Was that a call for MAURA K JOHNSTON I heard??

Josh, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I must add that in 2nd place, and in close pursuit of "Reign in Blood", comes "Psalm 69" by Ministry. Of course endless theological discussions can be held on the subject "Is Ministry really Metal?", but since I don't hold a fundamentalist position on the matter (nothing wrong with drum computers on a metal record nor a sense of humour) I say: Hail the true Sons of Black Sabbath! Shit, they even copied the riff of Slayer's 'South of Heaven', cheeky bastards. Needless to say Black Sabbath's "Vol. 4" comes in at 3rd place, hoho.

Omar, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The metalhead in me wants to say that G'N'R fall more along the lines of hard rock, and so I should list Paranoid or Facelift or Gluey Porch Treatments or The IV Crusade by Bolt Thrower. But I like Appetite for Destruction better than all those, and I can't deny they were hair metal.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry. Still trying to grasp how you can get "metal" and "best" in the same sentence.

Phil Paterson, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wonder what prize I win for being the first female to reply...

Listen. I don't think I really have albums that qualify as metal, it's more individual songs I like of that genre than anything else. If it qualifies, I like Appetite for Destruction and I do like Black Sabbath but I can't decide which album I like best. Does The Holy Bible count as some form of goth-metal? I think it does, so therefore, my favorite Metal Album is The Holy Bible.

I really tried to be into metal when I was younger cos everyone else was but I couldn't wrap myself into it. I'm not a good headbanger, unfortunately. I just can't work it out, my head tries to bang but it just sort of half assed whips. It never really gets going, bad neck I think. So I just couldn't listen to the music. Very sensible reason if you ask me.

Ally, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

L.A. Guns -- s/t. They shoot for thrills. Into the night. Into. The. Nayayayayaight.

Mog, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh and if it matters Mog is female

Mog, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have to go for the golden oldies too, considering I haven't listened to any metal since 1991. I would pick out three in particular:

Guns n Roses - Appetite for Destruction, Slayer - South of Heaven, Deicide - Deicide

Which just goes to show my progression into darkness. Interestingly enough I'm a Christian now...

Audrey, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SOD- "speak english or die"

mac., Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, see, now i am wondering about the semantics of 'metal' here ... you have your slayer, you have your love/hate, you have your first l.a. guns record (xoxo sterling).

but right now, the 'gonna get a little laid ... FUCK OFF' line from 'straightjacket' by love/hate is in my head, and so i am going to go out on a limb and vote for their debut album, 'black out in the red room.'

no disrespect meant to 'appetite for destruction,' of course, but really how much of THE ROCK is about going with the moment? you know what i'm talking about.

maura, Tuesday, 20 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm on a roll now and end up like metal's equivalent of Dave Marsh. Nr.4: Metallica's "...And Justice for All". Also one of those metal albums that's so tight it's almost techno, brilliant accelerations, sudden stops, good non-metaphysical lyrics (i.e. no sight of the Lord of Darkness), those quaint medieval intro's are perfected after which they are pushed aside by mega-riffs. Needless to say they went downhill after this one. Nr.5: Iron Maiden's "Life after Death". No really, double live-album with everything you need, yr 'Trooper', yr 'Run to the Hills', yr 'Number of the Beast'. Of course I haven't actually listened to it in more thant 10 years, but at the time: really good.

Omar, Tuesday, 20 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The metal albums I remember particularly liking were/are:

Annihilator - Never, Neverland Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction Anthrax - Persistence of Time Tool - Opiate

jel, Tuesday, 20 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn it! The Megadeth album I really liked was Rust in Peace!

jel, Tuesday, 20 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sorry mog for making u pick just one...yeah its hard- today im leaning more towards good ol' Celtic Frost and Into the Pandemonium. is it just me, or do they seem heavily influenced by Christian Death(hmm)...anyway its fucking classic. i guess ill say thats number one, and put soilent at no.2...as for #3 lets say napalm death - from enslavement to obliteration and #4 would be neurosis - through silver in blood. for now... now if we were talking about HEAVY albums in general as opposed to just straight-up metal, i would put Kiss it Goodbye at no.1 or 2. since its not exactly metal, its "post-hardcore" or "metalcore" or whatever the retards call it.

m, Tuesday, 20 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know it's kind of a cliche, but I'll say it again: Black Sabbath's Paranoid. It's stood the test of time. One of the first true metal albums (excluding "Helter Skelter" and other honorable mentions). It was recorded live on a shoestring budget, with just a few overdubs, and so it sounds very fresh, immediate and in your face. They had some more good songs over the years but no single album to match their "masterpiece," boy is that term overused.

Jack Redelfs, Tuesday, 20 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mmmm neurosis

Mog, Tuesday, 20 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oooh! How could I forget "Aqualung" by Jethro Tull?

rush -- 2112 side one

at this moment i sincerely believe this. i mean, who's more dangerous and evil and threatening: satan or ayn rand? no contest.

sundar subramanian, Thursday, 22 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

five years pass...
some true candidates:

black sabbath - master of reality
black sabbath - volume 4
megadeth - rust in peace
opeth - still life
katatonia - the great cold distance (if you want to call it metal)
dark tranquillity - the mind's i
metallica - ride the lightning
metallica - master of puppets
slayer - reign in blood
my dying bride - the dreadful hours

in fact, those are my top 10 metal records probably (no order). on a given day, you can replace the dark tranquillity with opeth's 'blackwater park'

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 5 October 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry. Still trying to grasp how you can get "metal" and "best" in the same sentence.

-- Phil Paterson

And he still thinks the same all these years later.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 5 October 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Meshuggah's Chaosphere.

Marty Innerlogic (marty innerlogic), Thursday, 5 October 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

"new millennium cyanide christ" is such a heavy, badass song it's insane

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 5 October 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

dude, charlie, as the biggest katatonia fan on earth, i can assure you, as good as the new album is, all their other albums are even better.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 October 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

Reign in Blood, fuckers.

groovemaan (groove nihilist), Thursday, 5 October 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

Nothingface is my favorite.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 5 October 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

The Sound of Perseverance. The ultimate metal album down to the Judas Priest cover.

lrsn (larssen), Thursday, 5 October 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

Obscura.

Øystein (Øystein), Thursday, 5 October 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Obscura is quite a ride.

I had a strong Atheist and Cynic phase. Love the fusion influences! Those songs'll go from Death to Mahavishnu Orchestra and back again.

But ultimately it's Chaosphere and Still Life for me.

bassace (bassace), Thursday, 5 October 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

Transilvanian Hunger

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 5 October 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I started this thread! I still love the fuck outta Sewn Mouth Secrets. But I still haven't heard any other Soilent Green albums.

Matthew OMalley (Matt-O), Thursday, 5 October 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

a deleted symphony for the beaten down is pretty rad

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 5 October 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

i think i'll go with the safe and predictable choice here, Reign In Blood.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 5 October 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

scott...i have all of them...dance of december souls, brave murder day, discouraged ones, tonight's decision, last fair deal gone done, viva emptiness...

i am convinced the great cold distance is the best. last fair deal gone done comes extremely close. but every thing CLICKED on the last record. they avoided repetitive song structures which was exactly what was wrong with viva emptiness. 'tonight's music' remains the best katatonia song, but in terms of sheer consistency, and on a song for song basis, 'the great cold distance' is simply phenomenal.

usually, i have a boringly predictable take on records, but even if i stand alone in claiming 'the great cold distance' as one of the best records of 2006, i can take solace in the fact that i've played it more than anything else this year

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Friday, 6 October 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

and bassace, great to hear the love for still life!

words can't quite describe how i quite feel about that disc.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Friday, 6 October 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

I tend to think that Sabbath's "Paranoid" is the ur-metal album that contains everything else. I'm not trying to take anything away from "Ride the Lightning" or "Reign In Blood," (both of which I love) or any of the other awesome metal albums out there that I may or may not be aware of, but it seems to me that "Paranoid" was sort of the metal mission statement.

J (Jay), Friday, 6 October 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

CRYPTOPSY : NONE SO VILE

BONERTIME! (ddb1), Friday, 6 October 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

that's cool, charlie! i'm glad there is another fan on here. i confess i haven't listened to it as much as viva emptiness. mainly cuz i still don't own a proper copy of it. all i have is a cdr promo that i got for reviewing purposes. and i do like it a bunch! i think i stood alone in liking viva emptiness so much. i couldn't really pick a fave before that. okay, dicouraged ones! or maybe brave murder day. or...

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 6 October 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

viva emptiness is really really dandy yes. love it to bits. i'm quite hooked on 'omerta'. i generally play that one twice, just to absorb everything about it :)

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Saturday, 7 October 2006 03:57 (nineteen years ago)
