Your favourite long song titles

List 'em. That's it.

Some groundrules, however. To qualify as "long", must be at least 8 words and at least 40 characters. So "Dropkick Me Jesus Through The Goalposts Of Life" just gets in, but "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" doesn't.

Sub-titles within titles not allowed. So "The Revealing Science Of God: Dance Of The Dawn" doesn't qualify, for example.

Brackets are allowed, if they are superfluous, i.e. the song title would still make grammatical sense if the brackets weren't there.

Some of my favourites:

"Thankfully Not Living In Yorkshire It Doesn't Apply" - Dexy's

"In Love With All You Are And Forever Maybe As If My Soul Depended On It To Survive" - Kid606

"The Sound OF Someone You Love Who's Going Away And It Doesn't Matter" - Penguin Café Orchestra

Jeff, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"(Lord It's Hard Being Happy When You're Not) Using The Metric System"- Atom & His Package

"A Man's Life Flashing Before His Eyes As He And His Wife Drive Off A Cliff"- Of Montreal

"A Shangri-La In The Desert/Garden With Cuddly Tiger"- Louis & Bebe Barron, from the film Forbidden Planet, which has LOADS of my favourites which just miss out by a word, or a couple of letters, grrr- please let me have "Robby Arranges Flowers, Zaps Monkey", it is so so good...

Hmmm, there are bloody loads that are only seven words or thirty-five letters or something, grrr.

emil.y, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This probably breaks your rules, but Bal-Sagoth's "The Dark Liege Of Chaos Is Unleashed At The Ensorcelled Shrine Of Azura-Kai (The Splendour Of A Thousand Swords Gleaming Beneath The Blazon Of The Hyperborean Empire Part II)" springs to mind.

As does NakliGroup's "What Notorious & Nefarious Inhuman Insectoid Activities Have Bill & Fly Posters Perpetrated To Cause The Initiation Of A Nationwide Manhunt For Them In Which Mysterious Signs Intersect With Our Spacetime Reality And Announce Their Imminent Prosecution?"

And just for hilarity's sake I must mention Dogliveroil's "A Dream Of England's Last Tory MP Hung From The Guts Of The Last Spice Girl".

Kodanshi, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, I just remembered another:

"Don't Be Afraid. Even If Your Nerves Snap, You Can Tie Them To A Fragment Of The Universe"- Fushitsusha.

Talkin' Bout The Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues (Everyone Wants To Live Forever)- The Flaming Lips. Great track,

Nice one with that P00shitsushi. A fookin' class top shag track too!

Kodanshi, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"If we can land a man on the moon, surely I can win your heart" - Beulah.
"How I long to feel that summer in my heart" - Gorkys, though this is cheating a bit as on the sleeve the track is shortened to "How I long" - their hearts are in the right place though. Now *this* is a great thread...

"Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" by Pearl Jam (this is to make up for every other song they've ever made having one word titles.)

Lord Custos, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Fast Driving Rave-Up With The Dandy Warhols Sixteen Minutes". It's kind of brilliant, I think.

killsonic, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One of the Deep Freeze Mice's albums, maybe _The Tender Yellow Ponies of Insomnia_, has a song called "A (Dog Found A Stick In The Park With Such Magical Powers That A Bark Caused A Marvelous Pie To Drop Out Of The Sky And The Doggy Would Grin Like A Shark)."

And I've already mentioned them in another thread, but the Freshies' singles "I'm In Love With The Girl On The Manchester Virgin Megastore Checkout Desk" and "I Can't Get 'Bouncing Babies' By The Teardrop Explodes."

As someone said upthread about a different song, these don't live up to their titles, but what could?

six years pass...

fuck, over the weekend I backed up a lot of my music to an external hard drive, but my computer kept refusing to to copy songs with really long titles. I got a message like "error copying files: file name is too long", and instead of giving me the option to change the file name and resume copying the folder, the process just stopped dead even though there were a lot of other files (besides the ones with the long names) waiting to be copied. why does Windows allow me to give files superlong names when I'm not allowed to copy or edit or delete them until I change the names to something acceptable? morons.

I love that Pet Shop Boys/Morrissey/Sparks school of song-titling where a long title is basically required by the lyrics and so it ends up feeling completely natural and unpretentious:
"I Wouldn`t Normally Do This Kind of Thing"
"This Must be the Place I Waited Years to Leave"
"We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful"
"Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me"
"This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us"
"I Thought I Told You To Wait In The Car"
etc.
