Shoes -- Classic or Dud?

Are any of their albums in print?

Classic. I believe all the albums are available online directly from the band.

Love everything up to Silhouette. (The later Shoes albums may be great as well; haven't heard them.)

I remember them from the very early MTV days (I remember one song "Too Late")...didn't like them at all back then, but I'd be interested in hearing them now. I think they had like 3 different vocalists in the band...

Your Very Eyes: Classic

Relistened to the Elektra era stuff recently -- pretty grand, did an AMG review or two. I think they're better heard song for song than album for album, if that makes any sense.

I've only got the Present Tense / Tongue Twisters twofer, and it's consistently tuneful & mostly great, tho naturally slightly dated production-wise. (Remember, this was back when bands routinely put things like "This album contains no synthesizers!" in their liner notes.) Classic, but kinda redundant - I don't know if I really want or need any others. Still, I'll probably buy their '77 debut someday, just 'cause I have an eternal fascination with all self-released DIY records of that era.

If any of their great songs had come within a sniff of the top ten, they would be fondly remembered as a classic singles band, instead of rabidly loved by power-pop cultists. "Black Vinyl Shoes" does have an appealing DIY quality, but I'll take "Present Tense" for better songs & sound. Plus, my best friend had it on 8-track.

I prefer Sandals meself.

So, this is not really useful, but what is on here?
anyway, any other people who think the song “a thing of the past” which appears on the album propeller from 1994 and the yellow pills vol. 2 compilation is a extremely great song?

and extra question, anybody know of any really good american power pop comps, i am familiar with the D.I.Y. ones.

Black Vinyl Shoes - why does ILM not talk about this album all the time???

Dunno, it's brilliant. Present Tense is awesome as well.

Thanks--didn't know a thing about this, just ordered it through Amazon (only $14 with shipping, less than I thought it'd be). Even the more recent albums of theirs always have a couple of songs I love.

Love this song so much - from when the chorus kicks in after about a minute:

three weeks pass...

For the 17 people in the world who care (most of whom I bet are surnamed Murphy): a couple of times through, my favourite song on Ignition is the first, "Head vs. Heart." Which is kind of funny, because this is the last band I'd ever look to as having wrestled with that choice. Another thing that caught my ear was "I believe in hope and change" on "Where Will It End." Setting aside that they're four years late on that, it's a shock to hear a lyric by them that's even cognizant of the outside world.

i think they are (or were) more canny and stylish than reading about them might lead one to suspect

"fire for awhile" is a great song and a great song title

Every time I went to the beach this summer I blasted this album.

Evan, Friday, 19 September 2014 21:04 (ten years ago) link

did you play it on headphones or did it just start playing out of the ether as you headed to the beach?

yes, these guys have a great sound and tons of hooks. Highly recommend the vinyl reissues (though it's easy to find them in dollar bins)

Cherry Red had a really cheap deal on a 3CD set of early Shoes material 73-78.
Already reduced plus 20% off during January. So came out at about £8.

Haven't really heard the contents but the band self recorded 3 or 4 lps before they got signed to a larger label.

20% off any old product on Cherry Red label with a code that's on the label website. Until end of month.
So I think might be any non new release product specifically on the sub label of the name.

what i wish they'd do, for those of us who already have BVS, One in Versaille, and Bazooka, is reissue Heads or Tails and add any bonus tracks to that release. i've always wanted to hear Heads or Tails and i'm not sure why they only include two tracks from it here
