Sightings ruled last halloween & at No Fun Fest. When I saw them the first time, a few years ago, they weren't as great. But they've been kicking ass and fucking with my head regularly now. <emofag> I REALLY AM DUMB FOR NOT GETTING ABSOLUTES YET. BUT I DON'T WANT TO GO TO THE RECORD STORE WHERE IT WILL BE CHEAPEST BCZ MY EX MIGHT BE WORKING. </emofag>

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 23 May 2004 07:14 (twenty years ago) link

dude i should have gone to this! i totally missed out!

derrick may didn't get good til the end....there was a huuuge expanse where it was just punishing, brutal, hard-as-nails techno that was impossible to get into

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 23 May 2004 09:02 (twenty years ago) link

....TOLD YOU SO!

thanks for having me Lauren...while as usual I was a bit dissapointed there weren't millions upon millions of people going crazy, we had a nice dance party for a while. Gabe and I cracked up about how many of the same records we brought(though different mixes, trainspotters...I had the Modern Romance Can You Move single, he had the bootleg edit, I had the french Disco Circus LP, he had the ballroom Francois K. mix, 2 copies of Human League Love and Dancing, etc)

There was a great disco light but some girl with "epilepsy" made me turn it off. Whatever, those epileptics, always ruining it for the normal folk.

Megaweapon had it's moments, dr. sample and foot pedal power electronics with some big melodic tones and power chord guitar rock sampling, Free Blood was FANTASTIC...really, it's great there's a band doing that, funky, sexy, fun, a bit silly, a bit sultry etc. Sightings however, I left 30 seconds in because I immediatey got a headache, shoulda brought protection...came back near the end to cue a record and had to wear my headphones it was so loud. All these kids were totally moshing. They were fantastic. John is a goddamn machine of a drummer, I want to see him have a drum-off with Kid from Oneida. Richard was "tight" on bass and Mark, well, everytime he touches his guitar it sounds like a steel factory exploding shards of aluminum and mercury splattering everywhere. Don't know what that means. No Wave meets thrash hardcore was my first impression upon seeing them years ago at the 103.9 space, and it still stands, add some Noise and Neue Deutsche Welle and you're set.

So yeah, a pretty good night, definately woulda been better if Geeta and Phil were there dancing.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 23 May 2004 16:09 (twenty years ago) link

the disco light at Tommy's is indeed great. I had a great time last night, and didn't even go into the back room (might've had something to do with the 7 beers and big pinch of hash I had before I even got there).

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 23 May 2004 23:24 (twenty years ago) link

dude...the drummer from sightings has to be the WORST drummer going, and i love sightings...it's like watching lawyers dance to DANCEHALL, awful.

anyway, I went to to see the fall...sorry lauren. I regret not going to Tommy's because every fuckface in williamsburg was crowded into an 11' x 11' room trying to get a piece of real live punk rock.

Also, Dan, did you get a haircut? Looks sharp, buddy!

Homes,
I was keeping my eyes peeled for you at that East River show...were you there?

I still haven't seen you on WHEELS OF STEEL.

**sigh**

ddb, Monday, 24 May 2004 13:40 (twenty years ago) link

I was there, down on the right side with MY MAIN MAN RUSS and all the other "cool kids" and whatnot (except for part of White Magic's set - when I was over on a hillside SMOKING HASH).

Nice,

FREE BEER AND I DON'T EVEN WORK IN THE RECORD INDUSTRY! YAY!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 May 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago) link

I was at the White Magic show, in the middle, sitting with my friend, pointing to where Mr. hstencil was and saying, "see, that's where all the cool kids are."

I'm not joking. I was like "that's black dice, and that guy's in the animal collective, and that guy's in the rapture and that woman was in the vels, and there's a rogers sister and that dude's in gang gang dance and that's BJ"

I have to say, and this is probably best for the other thread, but I wish the show was promoted more to audiences who would've loved to see Sharon Jones free outside. Almost the ENTIRE crowd was the typical east village/williamsburg hipster set. I guess that's what happens with token bands.

Anyway, I liked White Magic, I pretty much always do, definately glad she had the piano, I've seen them play acoustic sans piano(also sans miggy.) I thought they were good and while they're being cast into the neo-psyche folk revival, it's really a neo-psyche-rock revival, i.e., they are way more Jefferson Airplane then Incredible String Band. Or something.

And yes, I got a haircut, and I'm very happy with it.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 24 May 2004 16:12 (twenty years ago) link

"...and that's BJ"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OMG ROFFLE!!!!!!

don't dis on the Rogers Sisters - the Rogers sister in question at the show is a major friend (and I think I blushed when she smiled and waved hello at me).

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 May 2004 16:17 (twenty years ago) link

plus they're on your favorite label NOISE IS THE NEW EMO DUDE.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 May 2004 16:17 (twenty years ago) link

Why would you blush when she looked at you? ARE YOU EASILY WON OVER BY INDIE PSEUDO CELEBRITY FUXXX? (haha, I am guilty of this pretty bad, I always feel awkward at 8r14n Ch1pp3nd41e's place. [He and I have pretty huge overlap in our record collections! Sun Ra records, Boredoms, Ruins, Load-related stuff, etc.)

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Monday, 24 May 2004 16:24 (twenty years ago) link

I like the Rogers Sisters when they sound like the B-52s/Fall, not as much when they sound garagey. I totally had a crush on the drummer.

However I've never had a crush on anyone from Lightning Bolt.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 24 May 2004 16:25 (twenty years ago) link

oh, and you're laughing at the BJ joke but not the Vels reference?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 24 May 2004 16:26 (twenty years ago) link

The Rogers Sisters weren't very good when I saw them. EVEN COACHWHIPS WERE BETTAR

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Monday, 24 May 2004 16:27 (twenty years ago) link

no I like the Vels reference, that was totally ace (and you're prolly the only one sharp enough to make it). I am friend with BJ but that doesn't mean I can't have a laugh at his expense, does it?

"See that guy with the red hair and the ERMP shirt? He was in Born in East L.A. and also plays in the SB and Watersports. See that guy standing next to him? He, uh, doesn't do shit!"
