Why do you want to know Gareth? Are you trying to impress a Aussie Barmaid/co-worker/or are you planning a visit to an Aussie Bar in London to pull?

Not From There = pretty listenable and clearly have good record collections but ultimately end up sounding too much like their influences (Fall & MBV in particular - they wanted Kevin to do a remix at one point). That said the track "Abgedroschen" (yes, some of their stuff's sung in German) is v good.

Never heard of any of the rest of your list.

Magic Dirt -- I own "Friends In Danger" & it sounds like a more rough hewn, slightly-dronified Tall Dwarfs.

Let's talk about Ninetynine & the Vivian Girls & other like-minded bands, too.

machine translation- idiosyncratic, south coast band, who remind me of the pacific ocean in february. search: bad shapes, much of holiday in spain. ricaine- aussie shellac. loud. cf: tweezer. little general- metally post-rock with pre-programmed beats. ok. sandro- aussie tindersticks. dull, with oppressive vocals. widely loved. Legends of motersport- 'ironic' metal melbourne band. Not from there- teutonic. seemed to follow typical yoof radio trope; start off distinct, release novelty single off second album, and be forgotten soon after. International karate- hip-hop beats/ indie fusion, as i recall. can't remember much more than that. Blue Grassy Knoll- jazz? just speculating. Magic dirt- sonic youth style, with ok radio singles. destroy: photos in nw magazine a couple of weeks ago.

Most of these bands are melbourneindienazi fodder; search: the white_sands list on yahoogroups for people who actually know about these bands. Further (Sydney oriented) searches: Rebel Astronauts, (some of) Sealifepark, Ukioy-e. Deloris. Melbourne: Architecture in Helsinki (for the name alone).

Dave: if you like ninety nine, you'll probably like origami and lacto- ovo (especially the latter). Destroy: my comments on sandro. They were unfair.

I'm thinking bohjass, rather than boyjass, which, if the case, are post-mo jazz excursionists - there's a review of their cd on my site, http://home.iprimus.com.au/laurapalmer/reviews.htm, and you can also find interviews wtih machine translations, youth group etc - this isn't a huge plug for the site, just a suggestion to find out a little bit more...also trinkets, a brisbane-based post-rock band, are incredible - morricone meets baldametti via dirty 3.

Not From There are definitely worth seeking out. The album Sand On Seven was released in the US so it should be easy to find.

In particular, search Sich Offnen and What Is Better. Great stuff. They have a track called Breakfast With Valentine that also sounds exactly like what you'd expect.

Magic Dirt's singles are excellent. Search "Sparrow" and "Rabbit With Fangs" immediately.

Ricaine: neo-math rock with Aussie tinge. Now broken up; members are in the Breakdowns and Warped. Warped: rock and rock. Riff, riff, riff. Idolise AC/DC. Bucketrider: free jazz/noise ensemble. Ex-punks who get Australia Council funding for making unholy rackets. Blue Grass Knoll: bluegrass/ragtime pastichers who make a good living doing soundtracks for silent films. I think everything else has been covered already... I'm going to the Lacto-ovo CD launch tonight, though.
