Krautrock reissues

On another Krautrock thread Nick Dastoor put up a good link to a site with some reasonably priced Cluster reissues. I recommend 'Zuckerzeit' ....mmmmm....sugary...

Should I buy "The Wümme Years" Box Set or the individual albums as (? recently) reissued?

Forced Exposure has them online for not too much dough--16 a piece for the Clusters, and 21 for the two Harmonia albums. Which is still expensive, but hey--it's fucking Cluster for God's sake. And indeed they sound pretty good--a fair bit of analog hiss, but there's nothing that could've been done about that. Sadly, Forced Exposure does not have 'Sowieoso' by Cluster, and I'm still looking for a copy...

i have never noticed problems with the sound of kraftwerk records.

when i saw that in the window of Sounds of the Universe, i was hoping it would be an NDW compilation. 1972 is obviously pretty early, but a round up of zickzack etc would fit nicely next to the rest of souljazz's punk/dance/no wave hybrid interests.

A lot of non-obvious track choices on there! Also A+ nerd-baiting by putting only later Can.

anyhow, i was kinda surprised to see it's just the regular Kraut faves. still, a nice primer for anyone just getting into it, especially as it covers some of the less obvious 'also rans'. the sample for that Gila track is working for me anyway.

I was really surprised it wasn't, given the title, label and packaging. I mean, there's a LOT of that stuff and it'd be a helpful thing to have a sampler of.

Yeah, I'll probably pick it up - there's only three or four tracks I have already.

Roedelius track is from Selbstportrait Vol III which I can only hope means that record's finally getting a CD release

Not certain they're really Krautrock, but Jaki Liebezeit's Phantom Band's 'Phantom Band' and 'Freedom of Choice' (originally on the Sky label) have been reissued. Both excellent, both very different. The first is a lot like late-era Can, but frankly better and more focused--but with the African/Jamaican influence to a similar degree. The second feels much more "post-punk," focused on the beat almost to the exclusion of melody, with quirky mostly-spoken vocals.

part of me snobbishly wonders why i would bother with these soul jazz primers when i'm already knee-deep in the original LPs, but damn if that isn't a nice track listing, and their releases are always nice fetish objects with all kinds of pretty ephemera reproduced in the liner notes, etc.

those two dancehall comps on soul jazz are fucking amazing btw.

It is a really good comp, but again no Vampirettes in sight which is a pity.

By the way, the Schnitzler track would easily qualify as NDW.

souljazz compilation could end up being an expensive purchase, following up all those leads...

laughed when i realised that they'd put Rainy Day Sunshine Girl and Hallo Gallo together (given that both form the basis of stereolab songs)

Anyone have any experience or know if Bureau b's reissues are worth owning? They are releasing Gunter Schickert's Uberfallig and I really would like to get that, rather than pay big bucks for the original lp.

I have the two Phantomband re-issues, and Roedelius's Selbstportrait VI. All sound great, are 180g, and have a nice inner sleeve with photos and liner notes. Only complaint would be that the vinyl doesn't come with a download...who doesn't do that at this point?

I asked Bureau B as the Download release of the YOU albums have extra songs, that were missing on the vinyl.

Bureau B will do a download code for new releases but apparently it was because it was a reissue that they cannot do a download.

Hmm...strange! To me, it's hard to believe that anyone would care if they gave mp3 downloads of obscure kraut records along with a vinyl re-issue.

Then again, after recently learning about the amount of attention & care given to German book culture---maybe this falls along the same artistic lines.

Or I'm an American who wants everything all-at-once. Ah well...ripping records is kind of a fun thing to do on a rainy evening.

Got the Rodion reissue. Definitely more synth-heavy than I was expecting, but still great. Goes well if you're into the Sensation's Fix style.

The followup to the Soul Jazz comp mentioned upthread is equally amazing. These two comps brought krautrock into focus for me and now I've got a new world to explore.

Interesting to see the lp of the 1st Neu! in the vinyl racks of the local ex-chain record shop yesterday. That is to say this used to be one of a local chain but the other branches have closed down.
I'm just left wondering every time I find anything anywhere outside of low com denom stuff who it's aimed at. Is Neu! currently well enough known that it is likely to be snapped up, or is there an ambitious record buyer working behind the counter in the place.

I have found some pretty interesting material in the cd racks in there. Don't know who's buying vinyl in town though.

I just gave that Tim Gane "Kollektion 01" a spin - pretty solid but not as compelling as the two Soul Jazz kraautrock compilations.

it's a good collection but it draws from a pretty narrow strain of krautrock i think. though anything that reminds me to listen to Uberfallig can't be too bad!

10 CDs! oof. i can't afford that right now. would love single CD reissues of the first two albums. they have never been reissued until now and i sold my vinyl copy of echo for $$$ when the price was blowing up.
