Krautrock reissues

Well, the Neu! reissues are pretty good, anyone know if there is any chance that early Kraftwerk, Cluster, Harmonia, etc. might get reissued poperly at some point?

g, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't hold your breath on proper reissues of Kraftwerk's "1", "2", and "Ralf + Florian" anytime soon. R+F are still content with rewriting history such that "Autobahn" was "the first" Kraftwerk release.

Brian MacDonald, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always thought cluster was going to sound like stewart copeland's "equaliser" soundtrack (don't ask why!)v.disappointed when they didn't. if ye like neu the last 2 ganger records aren't bad .

bob snoom, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Cluster and Harmonia reissues are, as far as I know, 'legit' and perfectly acceptable soundwise - IF you can find 'em (especially at a 'good' price.) You can also get the two La Dusseldorf albs on the 'official' Japanese Captain Trip label. The commonly available Italian CD boots of the first four Kraftwerk albs are all complete and quite listenable: as Brian suggests, the best yr prob. going to get (apart from the original pricey vinyl) for the forseeable future.

On another Krautrock thread Nick Dastoor put up a good link to a site with some reasonably priced Cluster reissues. I recommend 'Zuckerzeit' ....mmmmm....sugary...

Andrew L, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i simply cannot seem to stress to enough people that they need to hear "psychedelic underground" by amon dúúl. you should be able to pick it up on a cheap rerelease - it's brutal!

bob snoom, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Faust on CD:

Should I buy "The Wümme Years" Box Set or the individual albums as (? recently) reissued?

Jeff, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Depends how much you like them/how much of the stuff you already have. One of the five discs (the 71 Minutes With...) is relatively useless, & the Peel Sessions + is only worth it for the actual Peel session. The other three are splendid, I think, but YMMV.

Douglas, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

andrew L.: I'm not sure, the harmonia CDs I have look more like bootlegs, they are german I think, sound quality=OK and packaging is rather poor. Perhaps they have been reissued in Germany since? I got these at least say 5 years ago..

g, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

On another Krautrock thread Nick Dastoor put up a good link to a site with some reasonably priced Cluster reissues

I believe that was the all-purpose wonder that is gemm.com

Nick, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Cluster and Harmonia reissues are, as far as I know, 'legit' and perfectly acceptable soundwise - IF you can find 'em (especially at a 'good' price.)

Forced Exposure has them online for not too much dough--16 a piece for the Clusters, and 21 for the two Harmonia albums. Which is still expensive, but hey--it's fucking Cluster for God's sake. And indeed they sound pretty good--a fair bit of analog hiss, but there's nothing that could've been done about that. Sadly, Forced Exposure does not have 'Sowieoso' by Cluster, and I'm still looking for a copy...

buck van smack (Buck Van Smack), Monday, 24 January 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

I've been waiting for those for a while. Last I heard, there was a Rhino/Astralwerks bidding war for the domestic releases of 'em.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

So, OK, a remastering job. Did they need to be remastered?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

dude, NO ONE is going to buy that tour de france soundtracks reissue; that's just a few years old! and not that good!

i have never noticed problems with the sound of kraftwerk records.

lots of krautrock reissues available at eclipse-records.com, including kluster/cluster, amon duul, can (lots of can boots), ash ra tempel, neu etc.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

Tour De France Soundtracks isn't two years old yet, how could it possibly need remastering?!? (xpost)

haitch™ (haitch), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

It's FINALLY coming out the way the band had originally intended.

Pangolino again, Monday, 24 January 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

Heh... so much for Kraftwerk, Kraftwerk 2, and Ralf & Florian reissues. sh-*yawn*-ocker

donut christ (donut), Monday, 24 January 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

I hope the reissues have less songs than the original versions did, in order that we can all better appreciate the clarity of their vision.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 24 January 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

i'm having a hell of a time finding Cluster '71 on cd.

eman (eman), Monday, 24 January 2005 08:33 (twenty years ago)

i bought the neu! self-titled reissue on vinyl. i was really happy with it, my frien d bought the cd version and it's absolutely fucking gash compared to it. the vinyl has so much soul.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Monday, 24 January 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

i was really excited about the first three albums being reissued :-(

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Monday, 24 January 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

jaxon, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:14 (fifteen years ago)

when i saw that in the window of Sounds of the Universe, i was hoping it would be an NDW compilation. 1972 is obviously pretty early, but a round up of zickzack etc would fit nicely next to the rest of souljazz's punk/dance/no wave hybrid interests.

gnarly sceptre, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:34 (fifteen years ago)

A lot of non-obvious track choices on there! Also A+ nerd-baiting by putting only later Can.

I Smell Xasthur Williams (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:35 (fifteen years ago)

anyhow, i was kinda surprised to see it's just the regular Kraut faves. still, a nice primer for anyone just getting into it, especially as it covers some of the less obvious 'also rans'. the sample for that Gila track is working for me anyway.

gnarly sceptre, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

^^contradictions :\

gnarly sceptre, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

There are some obvs trax 'Sunshine Girl', 'Hallogallo', 'Aguirre', but a lot of more idiosyncratic ones too

I Smell Xasthur Williams (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:40 (fifteen years ago)

when i saw that in the window of Sounds of the Universe, i was hoping it would be an NDW compilation.

I was really surprised it wasn't, given the title, label and packaging. I mean, there's a LOT of that stuff and it'd be a helpful thing to have a sampler of.

drinkin a carton of peace juice (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, looks like an excellent primer, obvious tracks or not. looks like it would be an excellent listen, too!

tylerw, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I'll probably pick it up - there's only three or four tracks I have already.

seandalai, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

Where is that Tangs track from?

You Weaked It! (MaresNest), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

it's the particularly awesome first track on Hyberborea, one of the last good ones

Roedelius track is from Selbstportrait Vol III which I can only hope means that record's finally getting a CD release

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

Not certain they're really Krautrock, but Jaki Liebezeit's Phantom Band's 'Phantom Band' and 'Freedom of Choice' (originally on the Sky label) have been reissued. Both excellent, both very different. The first is a lot like late-era Can, but frankly better and more focused--but with the African/Jamaican influence to a similar degree. The second feels much more "post-punk," focused on the beat almost to the exclusion of melody, with quirky mostly-spoken vocals.

Soundslike, Thursday, 15 April 2010 01:20 (fifteen years ago)

part of me snobbishly wonders why i would bother with these soul jazz primers when i'm already knee-deep in the original LPs, but damn if that isn't a nice track listing, and their releases are always nice fetish objects with all kinds of pretty ephemera reproduced in the liner notes, etc.

those two dancehall comps on soul jazz are fucking amazing btw.

by another name (amateurist), Thursday, 15 April 2010 08:10 (fifteen years ago)

It is a really good comp, but again no Vampirettes in sight which is a pity.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 15 April 2010 09:08 (fifteen years ago)

By the way, the Schnitzler track would easily qualify as NDW.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 15 April 2010 09:10 (fifteen years ago)

I used to buy any album with a Liebezeit credit (LOL Jah Wobble)

I Smell Xasthur Williams (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 15 April 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

I like that Czukay/Wobble/Liebezeit 12" a lot, actually.

drinkin a carton of peace juice (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 15 April 2010 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah no I meant the Wobble solo records like Invaders Of The Heart.

I Smell Xasthur Williams (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 15 April 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

Oh! Haha, agreein with you on those.

souljazz compilation could end up being an expensive purchase, following up all those leads...

laughed when i realised that they'd put Rainy Day Sunshine Girl and Hallo Gallo together (given that both form the basis of stereolab songs)

Anyone have any experience or know if Bureau b's reissues are worth owning? They are releasing Gunter Schickert's Uberfallig and I really would like to get that, rather than pay big bucks for the original lp.

van smack, Thursday, 24 May 2012 04:21 (thirteen years ago)

I have the two Phantomband re-issues, and Roedelius's Selbstportrait VI. All sound great, are 180g, and have a nice inner sleeve with photos and liner notes. Only complaint would be that the vinyl doesn't come with a download...who doesn't do that at this point?

dronestreet, Thursday, 24 May 2012 12:17 (thirteen years ago)

I asked Bureau B as the Download release of the YOU albums have extra songs, that were missing on the vinyl.

Bureau B will do a download code for new releases but apparently it was because it was a reissue that they cannot do a download.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Thursday, 24 May 2012 13:23 (thirteen years ago)

Hmm...strange! To me, it's hard to believe that anyone would care if they gave mp3 downloads of obscure kraut records along with a vinyl re-issue.

Then again, after recently learning about the amount of attention & care given to German book culture---maybe this falls along the same artistic lines.

Or I'm an American who wants everything all-at-once. Ah well...ripping records is kind of a fun thing to do on a rainy evening.

dronestreet, Thursday, 24 May 2012 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

oooh uberfallig!

I have a couple bureau b lps as well and they all look/sound great.

original bgm, Thursday, 24 May 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

Nice and thanks for the bureau b insight.

Probably will never happen, but they should just reissue Sky record's entire catalog.

van smack, Thursday, 24 May 2012 23:49 (thirteen years ago)

They, or someone, should reissue Gunter Shickert's "Samtvogel" already!

booth traums (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 25 May 2012 05:52 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, wait, looks like one of those Spanish labels did NEVERMIND.

It's also cool to see Bureau B's doing those Schnitzler reissues.

its a kirt not a skilt (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 5 October 2014 08:25 (eleven years ago)

Interesting to see the lp of the 1st Neu! in the vinyl racks of the local ex-chain record shop yesterday. That is to say this used to be one of a local chain but the other branches have closed down.
I'm just left wondering every time I find anything anywhere outside of low com denom stuff who it's aimed at. Is Neu! currently well enough known that it is likely to be snapped up, or is there an ambitious record buyer working behind the counter in the place.

I have found some pretty interesting material in the cd racks in there. Don't know who's buying vinyl in town though.

Stevolende, Sunday, 5 October 2014 13:38 (eleven years ago)

I just gave that Tim Gane "Kollektion 01" a spin - pretty solid but not as compelling as the two Soul Jazz kraautrock compilations.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 6 October 2014 13:50 (eleven years ago)

it's a good collection but it draws from a pretty narrow strain of krautrock i think. though anything that reminds me to listen to Uberfallig can't be too bad!

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 6 October 2014 20:56 (eleven years ago)

10 CDs! oof. i can't afford that right now. would love single CD reissues of the first two albums. they have never been reissued until now and i sold my vinyl copy of echo for $$$ when the price was blowing up.
