Inspired by spotting a used copy of the John Lennon: "(Just Like) Starting Over"/Yoko Ono: "Kiss Kiss Kiss" 7" at a record store recently. I've been wanting to ask this for awhile anyway. What are they? Y'all have to know at least some....

M. Matos, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...You do, right?

M. Matos, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shipping News/Metroschifter.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Built To Spill/Caustic Resin, most of the Working Holiday series

JM, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

can you guys be more specific? I know BTS/CR, but are the others singles or EPs? do they have titles?

M. Matos, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will BZZZT the Dis Plan / Juno votes right now.

Anything in the vinyl format released by Walt Records (an NYC boutique sort of label experience headed up by employees of Matador Records back in indie's heyday) is faboo - _The Wedding Song_ single, in particular, is fine. (Someone want to hook me up w/ a copy of _I Like Walt!_ - you know, with the _Extra Width_ cover?) Along the same lines would be any releases from the Shrimper label featuring multiple artistes. (Is it a coincidence that some of the Shrimper folk recorded songs for Walt releases? Could be, rabbit, could be...)

I'm partial to the Ida / Secret Stars split single from a couple years' back (but, then, that's expected - Ida could share space with LFO, and I'd be smitten).

And I'm pretty sure the Erase Errata / Black Dice single I just purchased this weekend will kick a llama's ass.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh! And (following the Mod's recommendations) the last entry in the original Machines Series - _Inclined Plane_, I believe. Superchunk's "Baxter", Tsunami kickin' it with "Beauty, Part II", and Unrest futzing with the Family Fodder! ("Debbie Harrry" becomes "Winona Ryder".) Yeah, there's Rodan, too, and I like Rodan, but if they "Darjeeling" were replaced with Scrawl's version of "Reuters" (from the previous Machines release), this single would be unbeatable.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, how about that indie rock?

David Raposa, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bizzarros/ Rubber City Rebels - mid-70's shmoe-punk.

Dave225, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have mine as an cd/EP with an engraved metal plate instead of a paper booklet.

The Oldham "Big Balls" split single?

For title alone: GBV Vs. GVsB

The Rachels/Matmos split

Actually, I know few b/c it tends to be an indie-thing and I always avoided 'em as collectaholic items even before I stopped being an indie.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Treacherous Three: "The New Rap Language"/Spoonie Gee: "Love Rap" counts as "indie," I suppose, because Enjoy was independently owned.

M. Matos, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ooh, ooh... god is my co pilot and gag 7"; skin graft double 7" ac/dc covers record w/ shellac/us maple/brise glace and someone not quite so noteworthy i cannae remember; and last but by no means least HARRY PUSSY and FROSTY 7" (was that on menlo park??)

bob snoom, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh - and David - YES! emphatically to that inclined plane 7" compilation w/ "baxter" on it - fkn faboo!

bob snoom, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a Xerobot/Duotron split that I like. I don't know if anyone else would though. It may have been on Bulb Records.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet/Change of Heart split single on clear green vinyl. Both bands do covers of the Diodes "I'm tired of waking up tired."

So nice.

cybele, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a good Nirvana/Jesus Lizard one.

Sean, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Six Finger Satellite/ Green Magnet School - The Declaration of Techo- colonial Independence.

james, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I really like the Engine Kid/Iceburn split 12", even tho' the Iceburn stuff isn't all that great.

Also good: Scapegrace/Conniption 7"

daniel, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If only you could see me now, Raposa. NIX THIS.

Josh, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Positive Force/Funky 4+1 "We Got The Funk"/"That's the Joint" 12". Released in 1999 on Sequel/Castle to promote their Sugar Hill reissues, so it wasn't a proper split release, but when the music's that good, who cares?

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Christ, I said I LIKE Rodan, you aesthetics psycho. Go buy _Spiderland_ and get off my jock.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The split 12" by !!! and Out Hud--it is Something Like A Phenomenon, as they say.

The split LP by Raoooul and Skinned Teen still rocks my world.

There are a whole bunch of Eggs split singles where I actually only care about the Eggs side, but I care deeply.

I'd also like to point out that the Sebadoh/Azalia Snail split 7" is far and away the best-selling record in the Dark Beloved Cloud catalogue.

Douglas, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'll have to think about this one, but the Grimble Grumble/Azusa Plane split 7 on Enraptured is wonderful (the grimble grumble side anyway)

gareth, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Crass - "Bloody Revolutions"/Poison Girls - "Persons Unknown" (one of the first? apart from that John 'n' Yoko one of course)

Stereolab - loads, but notably "Speedy Car"/Tortoise - "Vaus"

From this year, I like the k./Low split EP.

Jeff, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pop Group - Where There's A Will / Slits - In the Beginning There Was Rhythm

James Kyllo, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a friendly reminder: NOT ALBUMS

M. Matos, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Right. Sorry about that. How about the Gerty Farish/Pissed-Officers _Save the Ants_ split EP, then?

Douglas, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
Neko Case and Kelly Hogan released a nice spilt 7" on Bloodshot, covering one Loretta Lynn song each.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Friday, 5 September 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

My favourite Fierce Panda one of these ever was the Sing-Sing/Linoleum one with I Can See You and Your Back Again on it, cause I Can See You is perfect as we all know and Your Back Again was the really sparkly Linoleum gem hidden among all their undistinguishables.

Why not albums? There's not that many!

Anyway, some early ones were the Ronettes/Phil Spector combo singles, but also Fleetwood Mac's "Man of the world" /Earl Vince and the Valiants "Somebody's gonna get their head kicked in tonite" but that might be cheating..

Mark G, Thursday, 3 September 2015 06:37 (ten years ago)

eight years pass...

Can anyone think of some classic splits where the two bands cover each other’s songs? This seems to be a mini-trend now, and I feel like it goes way back, but I’m having trouble thinking of examples from “back in the day.”

My wife mentioned this one (which she has): https://www.discogs.com/release/775060-Built-To-Spill-Marine-Research-By-The-Way-Sick-Wrong

SY also did a nice split 7" with Erase Errata 14 years later. Not covering each other's songs, but both excellent tunes.

The Ghost Club, Thursday, 2 November 2023 20:17 (two years ago)

I have a soft spot for the Mogwai/Fuck Buttons ones.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Thursday, 2 November 2023 23:41 (two years ago)

i have a bunch of split 7"s, including the Marine Research/Built to Spill one which i think i purchased at Route 66 on MacDougal St. for a dollar when it was just out. All the other ones I think i bought in England and all are indie schminde from 1999 give or take a year, the best one is Nectarine No 9. - Walter Tevis / Secret Goldfish - You're Funny About That Aren't You.
The Nectarine side is particularly good and somehow reminds me both if Low and Royal Trux, I also have one with East River Pipe's insanely beautiful Cyber Car on one side and some Babybird song on the other

Deflatormouse, Friday, 3 November 2023 03:16 (two years ago)

Oneida and Liars did a split EP around the early 00s and covered a tune of the other.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 3 November 2023 03:27 (two years ago)

Guided By Voices / New Radiant Storm King

I only know NRSK from their split w/Silver Jews… was surprised to look them up and see they had eight albums(!)
