Whatever happened to Tad?

What did happen to the lard-arsed grunge obergruppenfuhrer? Did he eventually manage to eat his trailer?

Willy San-Siro Casper, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I dunno. I always thought he was a cool guy. Were any of his records worth listening to? Only reply if you like some Soundgarden and the Melvins' major label LPs.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

he's in a band called hog molly who seem to be playing more and more around here. i don't think they have anything out.

mac., Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didn't say that he isn't cool, just that he's a big guy, with a presumably big appetitie. Do you understand the phrase "To take the piss"? There's a chippy near me called Tad's, so I thought he may have gone back to his first love - fried food. I like some Soundgarden stuff, and some Melvins as well but I'm not massively into them.

Bill Casper, Tuesday, 20 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tad was a second-stringer. Nuthin' wrong with that though, he had some good songs.

As for the Melvins, where's the best place to start with them?

Jack Redelfs, Tuesday, 20 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"god's balls" will always stand with "screaming life" by soundgarden, "superfuzz bigmuff" by mudhoney, and the collected works of both green river and the u-men as definitive for that whole scene at the time. second string would be like blood circus and swallow (both of whom were good in their own right [i guess]).

anyway, i was always fond of "gluey porch treatments" by the melvins. i believe the "ozma" cd contains both albums. someone else might have a better idea as to where a good starting point would be, however.

mac., Tuesday, 20 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Casper, I wasn't disagreeing with you, I was just saying I didn't know if he'd eaten his trailer.

As for best place to start with the Melvins, that Ozma/Gluey Porch Treatments combo is it. Bullhead or 10 Songs would also do ya, and Houdini might be a good starter too, lord knows it wouldn't be expensive. Disco fans should run straight for the Crybaby.

He currently plays in new band Hoof who have yet to release any recordings.

After the grunge thing ran its course, Tad Doyle pooled together his life savings to pay for what would be known as one of the first successful gastric-bypass surgeries in North America. He soon changed his name to Tad Friend, and is now best-known as the author of Lost in Mongolia and a frequent contributor to The New Yorker.

Did a phone interview with him once. Very funny guy.

Favorite Tad-related memory. I was working at a little music mag with an endearing British gent named Kriss Needs. One day, Kriss and I were going through a stack of press photos, and came across one of ol' Tad. "Whoarggh!," said Kriss between sips of a tallboy of Olde English, "I'd hate to be his toilet!"

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 15 November 2007 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

That's not really a Tad related memory, it's more of a fat joke related memory.

Mr. Que, Thursday, 15 November 2007 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

he had the best of the grunge cameos in that movie Singles

latebloomer, Thursday, 15 November 2007 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

what is an 8-way Santa btw

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 15 November 2007 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

It's a group sex maneuver or a variety of LSD, if memory serves.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 15 November 2007 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

I always get those two confused.

No discussion of this is complete without a complete trashing of the label Mechanic/Futurist.

But no one has that kind of time on their hands.

Saxby D. Elder, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 21:22 (seventeen years ago)

Wow, I will totally check him out when he goes to town, esp. since I have never seen him play before. I find him fascinating in some weird way. The best exemplar of "grunge" other than the Bleach LP, for my money, anyway.

dell, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

goes to town

should've read "comes to town", but "goes to town" works okay, too, I guess...

The best exemplar of "grunge" other than the Bleach LP

Agreed, and a great live show. Enjoy!

Saxby D. Elder, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 04:26 (seventeen years ago)

Rad, I will totally go. I'm curious if only to see what the crowd will be like...

dell, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 05:03 (seventeen years ago)

I fucked up. The "shows" are "showings" of the DVD :( Tad is not going to perform any live shows.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

At first I mis-read the title as "Crusted Biscuits and Ringing Ears".

Mike Dixn, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

there was gold in them thar mounds

blunt, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

I've seen the DVD; it's entertaining. Not as entertaining as a Tad show was back in the day, but a fun, nostalgic way to spend an hour and a half. Just try not to choke yourself to death laughing when the various interviewees describe 8 Way Santa as the band's potential breakthrough, sadly sunk by frivolous lawsuits (first from the woman on the original cover, and then from an affronted Pepsico).
