DIE

korea, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The Minus Story album is pretty good, if a little bit of an earfuck. I'm also enjoying the Mirah + Black Cat Orchestra.

Tibi Lubin, Magnetic Fields, and lots that's on my list to buy.

Pipas' Bitter Club ep, especially "Mental" and "Sixten"
and Bearsuit's Cat Spectacular!

Joanna Newsom seconded

Architecture in Helsinki for sure

Mirah C'mon Miracle as well

I'll toss in anthony Neu York here as well...pop for sure and quite excellent but not "twee" really at all.

What to do about the haters?

Mike F, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I stumbled across Camera Obscura's "Underachievers" album and was shocked at how good it was. At first it's easy to blow off as a Belle and Sebastian ripoff, but the more you hear it, the more you realize that it has a character of its own. It has a lot of good songs on it. Lonely nighttime listening, I'd say.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I stood next to Joanna Newsom's cousin yesterday at an office party.

I like megamoog a lot.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know you knew the mayor, gygax! Did you ever meet Willie Brown?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I never met Willie Brown but I saw him in public a few times. On the other hand, I sat very near to Oakland Mayor "Spaceman" Jerry Brown on a flight to Reno last year. I confessed I voted him for President when helping him retrieve his luggage, he seemed thankful (for both).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

so really is Joanna related to Gavin?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'll second Camera Obscura, it's twee as twee can be, but you can still stand to listen to it.

I suppose you could sount that Of Montreal album, depending how broad your definition of "twee" is.

At some point in your life, someone will try to convince you that Chicago twee-peddlars The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir are worth listening to. Throw a drink in that person's face.

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost: their fathers are brothers.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

New Kings of Convenience June 7th. From what I've heard, its good stuff.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard some of that Architecture in Helsinki. It was awful.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm still ages behind with my listening but the indie stuff i've been enjoying lately:

- the hidden cameras (their demo tracks remind me of the cannanes' best period)
- cannonball jane album on 555 (if you don't currently own this and aren't making steps to get it YOU'RE A SCUMBAG)
- denise james' new album is lovely and further confirms matthew smith as my favourite producer today
- new tender trap EP is decent but amelia & co's golden days are long gone
- new clientele EP gets the big thumbs down from me. the first thing they've put out that i really don't like.

i'm keen on hearing the new Pipas stuff but the reports from their live shows in Aust were almost entirely negative across the board..

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

oh also new boyracer EP is a letdown.

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I had no idea that Denise James did solo stuff (I just know her from His Name Is Alive). Details, please!

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

she has two solo albums, a self titled one on poptones and a newie "it's not enough to love" on rainbow quartz. both are great but i prefer the songs on the poptones one. not unlike early Opal, perhaps a little poppier and a little less bluesy

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

the new pipas ep is the best twee release of the year.
the magic whispers cd was great, probably because it is all covers. new scarlet's well is more rocking than their other stuff and bid sings more but it's very good.
the freezepop cd would be ok if they didn't sing the choruses.
the baskervilles came out at the end of last year and it is great, able tasmans mixed with ladybug transistor. new salako is very good, more rocking. of montreal cd is excellent but i have fallen off it a bit. to see everyone mention how it is a big change in style is funny. the instant cafe records reissues/cd-rs are all great, saint etienne on pixie dust.
the owls ep is pretty good, sorta like an american indie version of jane weaver though the guy should probably sing all of the songe. fonda 500 record is probably my second fave record of the year.
new orange peels soon, new fairways soon(well old songs), the radio dept. ep is great. new brunettes album in a month:) ed cake is on their label now too so that could be exciting. komeda album is a drag. nice man cd should be out soon, frances macdonald can do no wrong these days. diskettes cd is very good, from last year, old scholl beat happening mixed with phil spector-ish aspirations.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I stood next to Joanna Newsom's cousin yesterday at an office party.

I'm assuming it wasn't gavin though. If so, what did his hair look like in person?

I have nothing else to add to this thread.

George's "Magic Lantern" is a bit twee, I guess. But it came out last year.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i have that diskettes thing but haven't listened to it yet

i hope you have the cannonball jane cd keith

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i like the cannonball jane cd a lot, automatic knockout is my fave.
the diskettes is fun, very lo-fi, home-made charming and it has great packaging.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! RFI: megamoog?!@?!?

do tell!

i miss having hooks into 555 stuff. i haven't seen much around lately.

heard good things about camera obscura. (the merge pop one.)

the new magnetic fields is quite good. search for "if there's such a thing as love" and "is this what they used to call love?"

the moonbabies latest had some really good pop moments. (i was feeling some st. etteine in there.) if it's twee, it's tangentially so.

i'm curious to hear what'll come from teenbeat this year... hollAnd has a dvd/cd... the first real release in forever!

m.

msp, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i heart the moonbabies although they are a little patchy

the latest teenbeat sampler had great stuff on it, esp the pocket rocket, hot pursuit and flin flon tracks.

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed about the moonbabies... patchy indeed.

awesome, i'll have to check the sampler out.
m.

msp, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

555 is pretty much over, he makes hand lathe records in 10 copies now. or something then makes bitter rants about it on his website. i feel bad.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

he's putting out three more and from then on it'll be boyracer stuff only.

did you know sh3lflife are also thinking of calling it a day?

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

that would not be a huge loss. i wish they would release the postal blue cd some time this year though.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The Diskettes = ace

Sean M (Sean M), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i think july skies could be labelled twee, their new album is meant to be out soon. the first was fantastic.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

bummer about sh3lflife... more in a nostalgic sense for me than now... brittle stars, nice people, great music. churchbuilder too... (although, i was less a fan of the tunes.) i seem to recall the fairways being pretty awesome live. saw them more than once with aisler set in more whimsied times.

* props old crush up to see if it still stands. it blows over when the A/C comes on. "CRIES!"
m.

msp, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder if the 'the back of her hand' on the upcoming fairways cd is a magick heads cover? that's one of the greatest songs ever.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i just listened to it, it's not, pity, but the song is really nice.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Kings of Convenience just leaked and it is nice, as expected.

Pipas and Joanna Newsom both seconded, at least when Joanna's isn't too gagsome.

I'm dying to hear the new Scarlett's Well. And dying to hear news of Mahogany's oft-delayed one. And does anyone know whether a new (as of last fall) Kelly Slusher album ever materialized?

Curt (cgould), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

...Joanna's voice, that is.

Curt (cgould), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yes the new KOC is great. Song 5 with Feist is really cool. Not quite as Simon and Garfunkely as the earlier material. But great nonetheless.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

what is the name of the band that Joanna Newsom plays keyboards in? I saw a video by them the other day and the music was pretty bad, I felt kinda embarassed for her.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the pleased. I only saw them once before they changed their name (from The Please) and they were bad then.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

(I don't remember her being in the band then either).

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish andrew prinz was producing the new czars one. he'd be perfect.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 27 May 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

andrew prinz is my dream producer. i wish i could see life through his fuzzy haze

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Thursday, 27 May 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

re: andrew prinz ... all the mahogany singles and eps were amazing. didn't ever sink into their full length tho. something felt off.

i haven't seen anything since. ???
m.

msp, Thursday, 27 May 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the album's the last thing they've released to date. andrew has been producing everyone and their dog over the last couple of years so that's probably what's causing the delay..

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Thursday, 27 May 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
not much going on, eh?

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 31 July 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

A few years ago one of my friends that i used to be in a band with moved to Omaha and this year they just put out a record on Bright Eyes' Team Love label. Their band is Tilly and the Wall and it's the twee-est thing ever created. Instead of drums, they have a girl tap-dancing!!

I hope they become a big success.

Adam Bruneau, Saturday, 31 July 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope they become a big success.

you haven't been doing the twee thing very long, have you.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Saturday, 31 July 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Somewhere online there's a video of them covering "Hey Ya" live that may be the whitest. thing. ever.

dlp9001, Saturday, 31 July 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The Concretes - S/T album is really quite excellent.

Mil (Mil), Sunday, 1 August 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a new brunettes album out. saw them live for the first time a couple of nights ago and really enjoyed it.

purple patch (electricsound), Sunday, 1 August 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The Frenchmen's Sorry We Ruined Your Party is amazing. The first ten songs go by in one speedy, buzzing, tuneful rush.

brian patrick (brian patrick), Sunday, 1 August 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Somewhere online there's a video of them covering "Hey Ya" live that may be the whitest. thing. ever.

i've just been watching this (download from here)
v. funny, i like the idea of the tapdancing girl.
