Mystery Bonus Question:
What was the best/worst non grunge/techno/britpop/indie/industrial album

Lord Custos, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Strictly from a commercial standpoint:

Overrated rock = Nirvana's _Nevermind_

Underrated rock = Alice in Chains' _Dirt_

Sad, but true.

David Raposa, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Overrated: Loveless

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does this count as "non grunge/techno/britpop/indie/industrial" ?

John Cale's "Walking on Locusts" - most underrated pop album of the 90s.

Dave225, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I should note the earlier claim by 'me' was by a clever elf masquerading as me. You naughty person. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What is the most overrated Rock album of the 90s? liz phair exile in guyville. i never really felt that album What is the most underrrated Rock album of the 90s? Drive Like Jehu - st. Came out in 91, sounds like it could of been produced today. An album way ahead of it's time.

Brock, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

doh i suck with html coding =)

Brock, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Overrated = Mellow Gold, Nevermind. Underrated = I don't know. Whatever it was, if it got more rating's I'd say it was overrated.

Nude Spock, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

orock: Prodigy; urock: Nobody's Cool, by Lotion; orap: Snoop; urap: La Trim; opop: backstreet; upop: cardigans

Sterling Clover, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Overrated: Beck's Mellow Gold, Slint's Spiderland Underrated: American Music Club's California, Red House Painters Rollercoaster album.

Michael O'Brien, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

overrated: sebadoh, nation of ulysses/the make-up, delta 72, guided by voices.

overlooked & underrated: the oblivians/compulsive gamblers, slant six, ted hawkins, holly golightly/headcoatees, supersuckers, the go.

fritz, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, what is this, underrated pop/rock/r&b, or aboveground vs. indie? FuX.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

overrated: beck, jsbx, guided by voices (as much as i like them), liz phair, nirvana...

jess, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, yeah! Sebadoh!!! I HATE THEM NOW!! I'm amazed at how much I can't stand them when I used to think it was just great, honest music. Sebadoh III is the only one I sort of like. I think I'm done with that style of music ("that style" being sonic youth-inspired white guy confused emo rock). Sonic Youth can't make a new album that I'll enjoy, either. I'm almost sure of it.

Nude Spock, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, yeah! Sebadoh!!! I HATE THEM NOW!!

In which Nude Spock proves his worth to me. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

underrated:
- Pinback: This Is a Pinback CD
- Idaho: Year after Year
- Swell: first three albums
- Yo La Tengo: everything
- Red House Painters: Down Colourfull Hill and Rollercoaster - Giant Sand: everything

overrated:
- Björk: everything
- Oasis: everything
- Pulp: all
- Radiohead: everything before Amnesiac

alex in mainhattan, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I forgot Sigur Ros who are totally overrated.

alex in mainhattan, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Amnesiac was published this year so it is all Radiohead of the 90s. And Sigur Ros is already the next decade so forget it. Another underrated band of the 90s are the Sugargliders.

alex in mainhattan, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

overrated: tortoise. underrated: powerdresser

bob snoom, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alex in Manhattan is about to become a eunich.

Tim, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

overrated: anything by radiohead

underrated: Trash Can Sinatras - I've Seen Everything, whixch I mention at every possible opportunity...

g, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, here's another underrated one, Raise the Pressure by Electronic, my fave Electronic album, well it's sounds the most like New ORder to me anyway.

g, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alex in Manhattan is about to become a eunich.
That word is not in my dictionary Tim. Did you mean eunuch or Munich or ??? Anyways another underrated album of the 90s is Gun Club's "Lucky Jim". Not to forget Chilton, Vaughn and Vega's "Cubist Blues". I will put it on now.

alex in mainhattan, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know if these guys are underrated as much as they're just overlooked, but LONG FIN KILLIE!!!

Clarke B., Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Overrated: I guess everyone's going to say Radiohead and Oasis, right? Heh heh heh. Blur's Parklife is also in there (Damon's voice really irritates me on this one for some reason - that smugness, sense of middle-class insulation is total) as well as anything by Spiritualized or Pearl Jam, and Primal Scream's Screamadelica.

Underrated: Kenickie, Le Tigre, early Manic Street Preachers. The Holy Bible is better than In Utero and Generation Terrorists, overlong as it is, is SO MUCH BETTER than Definitely Maybe, "'tis an argument too starved for my pen."

Justyn Dillingham, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Overrated: Liz Phair's Exile In Guyville (mediocre) and Whipsmart (crap, Helmet's Meantime (decent, but remember the insane bidding war?) Beck, PJ Harvey (I'm surprised she wasn't coronated in the mid 90's) Fugazi, Matthew Sweet

Underrated: Buffalo Tom, For Squirrels, The Refreshments, Goo Goo Dolls, Archers of Loaf, Lemonheads-It's a shame about Ray, Paul Westerberg's solo work especially Eventually, the Bodeans, the Slackers, Fun Lovin' Criminals (in America anyway)

Mark M, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For some of these "overrated" albums maybe you should be saying "overpublicized"...several great albums have fallen prey to a little too much hype.

On that note, underrated rock: Urge Overkill's "Saturation". The guys just got it together for one album, but it rocked for sure.....

I have to agree with overrated: Sebadoh. I actually feel the same way about dinosaur jr. as well.

Ian M, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Underrated.. Helium, The Dirt of Luck. Prob woke me up to indie rock. And the Warmers s/t, and Six Finger Satellite Severe Exposure. And Smog! I love Smog.
Over.. Beck. Bjork. Elliott Smith. Sunny Day Real Estate (tho I quite liked How It Feels... etc., JSBX, Tortoise, GBV, all the indie rock I got woken up to & which I hold responsible for my inability to make judgments on any of the other musical categories.

daria gray, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whaddya mean UO 'only got it together for one album'!? 'Exit the Dragon' is their best. Which makes it the u-rock album of the 90s.

Ridiculously overrated, Metallica's 'Black Album'. People thought 'Be Here Now' was dull, overlong and samey? It was fucking Carl Stalling in comparison to 'Metallica'. "Sad But True" is the only good song on it.

dave q, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Overrated: 'The Bends'

Underrated: 'Zooropa'

dave q, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Overrated: Lamb - debut album. Underrated: B12 - "Electro-Soma".

Mark Dixon, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

overrated: ROCK , Cibo Matto, everything by Beck, including and especially midnite vultures (and I used to love him so...), The Fugees, Dan Bern Underrated: RAP , The Nields, Soundgarden (please don't hurt me), REM's Automatic For The People, The Breeders, Manu Chao (Clandestino cannot be praised enough), Rap

Dan I., Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd say something but I'm still reeling from hearing Spiritualized mentioned in the same sentence as Pearl Jam and then the Manics.

Nirvana, that boat really left me on the island.

Ronan, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Underrated: James - Laid, Strangelove - Time For the Rest of your life, The Sundays - Static & Silence, REM - Monster, Boo Radleys - Come On Kids

Overrated: Suede - Coming Up(pale shadow of the previous two albums), Mark Morrison - Return of the Mack, Radiohead - OK Computer(They've done better since), Oasis - Be here now(Not quite the second coming of music it was made out to be), Travis - The Manhoo(my freakin' ears!)

Phil A., Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh yeah, and Underrated: KMFDM (woohoo!)

Dan I., Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Six Finger Satellite Severe Exposure

what a great freggin album.

law of ruin tops it though.

Brock, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does this count as "non grunge/techno/britpop/indie/industrial"?

Yes, that'll work...

Lord Custos, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, Law of Ruins is nice too, I do like, but it lacks "Board the Bus" & therefore cannot top Severe Exposure.
KMFDM sucks, they're impervious to criticism. But the kids just love it.

daria gray, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i just wanna say that Urge Overkill's major label albums (saturation and exit the dragon)sucked arse compared to their touch & go stuff, which sucked arse compared to their debut ep Stragne, I... -- deifintiely their finest moment, it rocks, it's all been downhill since...

g, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i was going to nominate Sugar's 'Copper Blue' as most overrated rock album -NME album of the year etc- but does anyone still rate it?

Stevo, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There was a thread about Sugar a few months ago and if memory serves me, "Copper Blue" received high marks and certainly is considered their finest album by most. Personally, I think it's a great album that holds up well a decade after its release.

Mark M, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yep you're right Mark. Loved Husker Du but Sugar were a massive let- down, Mould digging out his electric guitar after seeing Nirvana's sales figures. "Listening to it was like being forced to eat a sweaty grey T-Shirt." Spot on Tom.

Sugar - Classic or Dud

Bob Mould - Classic or Dud

Stevo, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

over: Britney
under: Britney

Tracer Hand, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely it isn't too much to ask (apols to the maybe 3 of 40 contributors who did go wider) for a frame of reference a little bit wider than American indie rock??

Overrated: Leftism, Snivilisation, Endtroducing...

Underrated: X-102 Discovers The Rings Of Saturn, Whoops Im An Indian (Hal Wilner), Black Secret Technology (A Guy Called Gerald)

Tom, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Underrated & overlooked: Keiji Haino - AFFECTION

Kodanshi, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Underrated: DJ Scud
