briania (briania), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

A physical impossibility, surely. Unless you'd like to show us how it's done.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Arr, belowdecks with ye, m'boy.

briania (briania), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry to derail this thread that I just noticed, but I'm really shocked to see "He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss)" on your list, Tom. It's one of the most offensive songs ever written-- surely the horrible politics in it prevent it from being "perfect," no?

antexit (antexit), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

no way. i dont think that song should be read as advocating it anyway. i believe the story is that carole king wrote it about a friend who had that point of view. its an expression of a true point of view. its obviously a view coming from a perverse psychology but tahts what art is for, expressing every aspect of the human condition, and i think what makes the song so amazing is it acknowledges such a dark area of the human psyche through such an apparently "naive" medium (the girl group). what i really mean to say is its creepy as shit.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The La's, "Timeless Melody"

OCP (OCP), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

also:

"Written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin. They were inspired to write this song after Little Eva (pop singer famous for her hit "The Loco-Motion") told them about her relationship with an abusive boyfriend. Due to the subject matter and lyrics, this was a complete failure. It was disliked by the public, and radio stations denied the song airplay. The Crystals hated the song as well. Why Phil Spector convinced them to record it and then tried to release it as a single remains a mystery today. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA, for above 2)"

http://songfacts.com/detail.lasso?id=2790

OCP (OCP), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe so, but the issue of responsibility has to be raised-- the Crystals were largely popular with adolescent girls, and we all know now that you learn a lot of what you know and understand about love and relationships from the culture that you're exposed to at that age. Even if the song's operating in an ironic mode, which I don't believe anyway, it was totally irresponsible for the group to have recorded it.

antexit (antexit), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Or for Phil Spector to have recorded it, anyway. It seems pretty transparent, to me, that even if the song was meant ironically that's not the spirit in which it was recorded-- by someone we now know is a vicious and unrepentant wifebeater.

antexit (antexit), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

im not saying its ironic. the group didnt want to record. its a very serious song. i think the idea that children should be hidden from subtler, darker bits of their minds is one of the most opressive, unnatural, disgusting ideas around and the answer to preventing young girls from following this ideology certainly isnt to censor the culture. and its doubly important when you recognize that pop music is art, and i believe this song is operating as art even more than most music of that genre and time period. its certainly one of the least superficial and real. and it wasnt a hit anyway, haha. i cant believe im having this conversation.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not talking about children being "hidden" from "subtler, darker bits of their minds," for heaven's sake, and I'm certainly not arguing for censorship. Phil Spector put the words of an abused woman--that the only real way a man can express his love for a woman is through violence--into the mouths of a group singing about love for 12-year-old girls. How can that possibly be justified?

antexit (antexit), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

CTRL + F "TOXIC"

"Finished searching document."

WHAT THE GOD DAMN PEOPLE!?!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"TOP 1000 SHITTY OBSCURE RETARDED SONGS THAT AREN'T BRITNEY SPEARS 'TOXIC'" is what this thread should be retitled.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I keed, I keed.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the product is justification enough. and in the end, i dont think it did any real harm. i admit that the song does not "fit" in with the rest of the groups repertoire or the music of that time as a whole, but i also think it transcends it and becomes something greater. its a fantastic song.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not talking about children being "hidden" from "subtler, darker bits of their minds," for heaven's sake, and I'm certainly not arguing for censorship.

Well, despite the fact that you say this isn't what you're doing... you are!

OCP (OCP), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

that the only real way a man can express his love for a woman is through violence
Huh??? The only "real" way? The song says nothing of the sort. The lyrics don't condone anything, but they are expressing a view of the situation from the standpoint of the abused woman. It's not a pretty view, it's not a comfortable song, and it's not meant to be. Goffin and King wrote a song about love (NOT a "love song") and it's not a happy one. It's very very different from what the Crystals and the other girl groups were singing during that era, but that doesn't make it improper.
By the same reasoning, one could argue that another Goffin/King composition, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" (also an edgy lyric for its time) is saying that the only real way that a man can express his love for a woman is by sleeping with her, and any woman who does cooperate will be lonely. We're looking at a snapshot of a moment in the lives of two people, and it's not an unrealistc situation at all. But they're just two people -- don't assume that it's meant to be representative of "proper" behaviour.

My no. 1 is The Murmaids "Popsicles & Icicles".

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Sunday, 27 November 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Someone already nailed "Walk Away Renee". I'll add Johan's "Tumble and Fall". Most songs are ruined by the addition of a bridge but this one actually enhances an already perfect pop confection.

I'd also like to point out that I mentioned "Is This the Way To Amarillo" a very long time before it turned into the top party piece singalong annoyance-fest that it is now. Still a great song, though.

two months pass...
I'm very surprised that nobody mentioned Money - Pink Floyd, or Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers, no Pearl Jam, no Hendrix, no Who,Metallica, Bob Marley or anything...

now, you guys'll go "WTF? everybody knows them" yes, that's quite true..and we've all heard Zep or Clapton on the radio COUNTLESS times, but that's for a very good reason.

Well the number one I think should have been "See Emily Play". That should have been SOMEWHERE on the list!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 28 April 2006 08:31 (twenty years ago)

without GREEN, this list is shite. so here we go:

Green - She's Not A Little Girl
Green - Monique, Monique
Green - Bittersweet
Green - I Play The Records
Green - She's Heaven

...etc. etc. ad infinitum

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Friday, 28 April 2006 11:46 (twenty years ago)

What Scritti Politt album are those on, then?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 28 April 2006 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Sea Urchins - "Pristine Christine"
Delays - "Valentine"
Byrds - "Mr. Tambourine Man"

And "Emma's House" should be here somewhere. Talk about perfect pop... there are none more perfect than that.

Attr. Captain Badass, Friday, 28 April 2006 13:43 (twenty years ago)

I would expect a list of Perfect Pop songs to contain only Glaswegian early 80s pop from the likes of Aztec Camera, Orange Juice and Paul Haig.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 28 April 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)
