Is Snow Patrol important?

My first Q here, so hi! Just been listening to SP's new album Final Straw, and i have to wonder - is it good or pretty much crap?

I like parts of it, but it seems pretty slick and well, aimed at people much younger than I (i'm 30). Is Snow Patrol something special or is it a bit like the UK's answer to Death Cab For Cutie or an updated version of Coldplay.

BTW - I like these 2 bands, but only just.

Whether the album is good or not doesn't have much to do with being important though, does it?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

No - but you get the idea, ie, would you consider the album among those important releases of 2004 based on what u think of it / the band?

PT, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

important? good lord no

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't see the coldplay comparison at all, especially since SP have been around much longer.

let's not forget that many long-forgotten britpop also-rans had quite high-charting releases. i expect SP to suffer the same fate. there's no shame in that.

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

no shame indeed. And it's really only this album from SP i have to go on, plus the Reindeer Section project from the same guy.

re the coldplay comparison, you know when bands draw from an indie guitar music wellspring and fashion music which "crosses" over to a wider audience, often with pretty slick production values and heart-string tugging moments aplenty. That's the comparison i get w/ coldplay, and to some extent Death Cab, rightly or wrongly.

I've said it on another thread, but that "Gleaming Auction" track had me going up to the record store counter to ask what it was. However, the rest of the album is only so-so for me. Also, any Coldplay comparison is just really lazy.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The last two singles have been a touch Coldplay in their doe-eyed romanticism and tasteful maximalism. But that's all. "Absolute Gravity" and "NYC" off SP's first album demonstrate that they are substantially different though. Or at least used to be.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Snow Patrol. They have a fresh, minty aftertaste.

scottontharox (scottkundla), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

They have a fresh, minty aftertaste

i'm sure you say that to all the boys.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Thursday, 3 June 2004 04:02 (twenty years ago)

snow patrol remind me of feeder. this probably isn't a good thing.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 3 June 2004 09:25 (twenty years ago)

That's harsh, weasel.

They're nice guys, and I was very surprised to hear they changed their sound so much. I kinda know them too well to ever consider them "important".

___ (___), Thursday, 3 June 2004 09:30 (twenty years ago)

Important, no. Part of an greater indicative trend in the top end of the charts, yes, but not important.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 3 June 2004 11:01 (twenty years ago)

Is Gum important?

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:01 (twenty years ago)

Some of ush ave been calling them shit for years

Artist: Snow Patrol Title: When It's All Over We Still Have To Clear Up
Label: Jeepster Stars: 1/2
(http://home.iprimus.com.au/laurapalmer/cdreviews2.htm#snow)

I should have known by the title that I was in for a shocker. If you can give me one thing worse than pretentious indie shite that takes itself way too seriously, I will in turn give you this CD. On the same label as Belle and Sebastian and Ian McCullough, “When It's All Over “ marks the Glaswegian trio's second long player and has seen them hailed as inheritors to the throne of Ash and Coldplay. Fuck it - these guys couldn't inherit my outback throne.
What in particular is wrong with this “gentler, intelligent, profound heartbreak pop”?, I hear you ask. Firstly, it ain’t profound, unless you worship at the undergrad alter of lyrics like "Something told me we'd be happy forever/I don't see how this could change any of that.” Secondly, there is nothing intelligent about a band whose musical tones, drowning in over-synthed attempts at harmony, stagger through the gutter of soulless, bland Brit-crock, like Noel Gallagher with a joint and a pint of melancholy gin. I've given this shiester 3 full listens, and that's two and three-quarter more than it deserved. Steer clear unless you need a new coffee-cup coaster.

Is Snow Patrol important?

They are if you've been trapped under a canopy of frehsly avalanched snow or fractured your tibia on a treacherous mogul. Otherwise, no.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:28 (twenty years ago)

The only redeeming thing about Snow Patrol is that the only time I saw them live, Camera Obscura were supporting them. So at least I discovered one good band that night. Snow Patrol themselves, ergh. No thanks.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Definitely not important...but I do like them more than anything else on Jeepster.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Queen of Godawful state of music - that would have worked so much better if you had done that for the first album rather than the second...

___ (___), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Hysterical review from Queen Godawful. This thread has articulated why I find grating that doe-eyed indie teen sincerity thing. It appeals on a basic level, but then you find yourself trying to wash it off with some, I dunno, Spoon or something.

"...stagger through the gutter of soulless, bland Brit-crock, like Noel Gallagher with a joint and a pint of melancholy gin."

- This is gold.

two years pass...
my coworker seems to think they're important as she has assaulted my fragile ears with their repetitive boring shit constantly for the past two days.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 5 January 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

There's been a poll among virgins recently and their Chasing Cars has been voted as the best track ever! (or something)

StanM (StanM), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

Nice to see them bashed here. I thought they were pretty damn boring.

Bimbler (Bimble...), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

xpost: the hymen covers their ears pretty darn well.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

Snow Patrol:UK::The Fray:US?
(I knew that logic course I took in college would come in handy someday...)

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

shouldn't they be known as coke patrol?

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Saturday, 6 January 2007 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

Hahahaha...riding the coattails of Belle & Sebastian which is really...not saying much is it?

Good Warlock of the West (Bimble...), Saturday, 6 January 2007 11:45 (eighteen years ago)

they have become distressingly important.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 7 January 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

snore patrol - chasing cars - back in the charts.

the mainstream music industry is totally fucked up, gnarls b crazzzzzzzzzzzzzzy also back in the chartz, as are NME generic guitar band Automatic. [according to radio 5 live]

The Singles chart is going the way of American model, they will become the airplay charts, even more controlled by radio 1, radio 2, gormless trad guitar niche stations such as virgin and xfm, and a multitude of blando mainstream local chart radio stations e.g Capital in London.
