personally i'd get "the good son" or "henry's dream" first, people are sure to disagree..

Jim's choices are excellent, but as a point of entry (seeing you like god is in the house so much) I'd rather recommend Let Love In. It's his most, err, consistent/accomplished IMO. If you enjoy that, check out Jim's picks and Tender Prey, which has the excellent "The Mercy Seat" and "The City of Refuge" (a personal favorite since I once saw him perform it live).

Some Nina Simone

The Good Son heartily seconded.

The Cave album I probably play the most, though, is the live album, Live Seeds. The live versions of several tracks here are significant improvements upon the studio versions. No lie.

not such a hot Cave fan myself, but I cannot deny how glorious the first song on his album with Die Haut, "Stow A Way" is. it just got re-released, too.

Since Nick Cave is God, I recommend you buy the Bad Seeds entire discography. I'm not a big fan of his prior punk band Birthday Party, but the Bad Seeds is one of my favourite bands ever, all their albums are gold. I recommend "Murder ballads" which is a concept album in itself, very well thought: all songs deal with murder and the psycho variety. Check out the beautiful "The curse of Millhaven" (lyrics to die for, no pun intended) and both duets with PJ Harvey and Kylie Minogue. SUBLIME.

Murder Ballads is indeed fantastic. The Birthday Party were a very different beast entirely, it's true, but god how I love them.

I'd recommend Let Love In or Tender Prey normally ..

But if God is in the House is what you're fawning over, I'd recommend The Boatman's Call... it may be the next-closest thing.

I'll third or fourth The Good Son and second or third Let Love In. A lot of his stuff since LLI has been a little spotty.

My brother played the version on the DVD for me once when I was really (really really) stoned and even though I thought it great I was too frightened to ask this question

If you like "God Is In The House" then the obvious one to go for is "No More Shall We Part" as it's on that album. Then get "The Boatman's Call" and "Let Love In" and work backwards from there as they are the most similar in style. Nina OTM in buying the entire back-catalogue though, with the exception of the highly disappointing "Nocturama". I would also heartily recommend the "God Is In The House" DVD which is a live set recorded in Lyon with an absolutely stellar performance of "The Mercy Seat"

haha, no-one has bothered to recommend the album God Is In The House is from, "No More Shall We Part". That's because it isn't very good (although i do like about half of it). I'd go for the Good Son or Let Love In. Earlier albums get more abrasive the further back you go, later albums get increasingly more maudlin (I love Boatman's Call though). Nocturama was a giant misfire.

No More Shall We Part was mighty lame. Lame enough that I didn't bother to pick up Nocturama.

'the first born is dead'.

In this order:

The Good Son
Let Love In
The Boatman's Call
Tender Prey
From Her To Eternity
Henry's Dream
