Q Magazines top 50 British albums of all time is a bit of a joke really, isn't it?

All done in the name of what is commercial too (remember when they voted "What's the Story" as the best UK album of the 90s and issued an apology for their original 3 star review?

I can't believe any mag would rate Definately Maybe as the best UK album ever. Or leave out "Dog Man Star" by Suede. And they left out loadsa other bands... where are The Libertines, Saint Etienne, Black Box Recorder, T*Rex? And who would really rate "Everything Must Go" as a great album? Why no Sleeper? They're better than Queen and Coldplay and all that shit.

And "Different Class" by Pulp is never as good as "This is Hardcore" or "We Love Life".

If this list was five years ago you'd have had Travis, The Stereophonics and Catatonia in there.

Yes, where is "Here Is My Spoon" by Edward Barton? Tchoh!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 13:27 (twenty years ago)

The absence of both Stump's 'A Fierce Pancake' and 'Let them Eat Bogshed' by Bogshed was a shocking oversight, I thought.

Definately Maybe and Everything Must Go? Bloody hell Q has gone down the tubes. Was the list sponsored by a clothing manufacturer like 95% percent of the rest of its "journalism"?

Flotsam of the Fishfolk (Flotsam of the Fishfolk), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Judging only one album per artist, I can think of ten albums that were missing:

1) Dog Man Star - Suede
2) Tiger Bay - Saint Etienne
3) This is Hardcore - Pulp
4) Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division
5) The Facts of Life - Black Box Recorder
6) Up the Bracket - The Libertines
7) Vauxhall and I - Morrissey
8) Electric Warrior - T*Rex
9) Elastica - Elastica
10) The It Girl - Sleeper
9)

God, this is worthy of analysis -- but The Libertines? Seriously?

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 13:41 (twenty years ago)

11) Overground, Underground - The Wombles

flowersdie (flowersdie), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago)

11) Overground, Underground - The Wombles

Disagree vehemently over this, the best Wombles' album is "Keep On Wombling", the one with Orinoco on the cover playing a sitar. The first side is suite of interlinked songs called "Orinoco's Dream (Fantasies of a Sleeping Womble)" - it's kind of what Mike Skinner was trying to do on the last Streets' album but far far better.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 14:16 (twenty years ago)

its almost exactly the same as their british albums list from 2000 -
fabs, oasis, psb, new order, massive, msp, bowie etc etc.
not that they're wrong or anything, its just..exactly the same!!
give or take the stuff from the past 4 years obv.

where's timelord/voyager by momus?!!!!!

to say nothing of 'life's hard and then you die' by it's immaterial.

RE: Keep on Wombling

I did consider this, It's strange album, the first side is a sort of concept featuring Orinocco's dreams (of which he obviously has many!) , and ends up with him being chased by a scary giant. But I thought the diversity of Overground, Underground gave you more of a complete overview of the Wombles sound. Overall I'd say Keep on Wombling is one for fans only, while Overground Underground is a great introduction to the band.

Oh and The Streets album comparision, are you sure you don't mean 'Tobermory's Music Machine', cleverly hidden away on the second side of KOW?

flowersdie (flowersdie), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Could be, have to pull it out and reacquaint myself with it.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 14:36 (twenty years ago)

One of the few interesting inclusions is Unhalfbricking by Fairport Convention - I've never seen this wonderful record in any Best.. lists before.

bham, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 14:53 (twenty years ago)

I've always preferrred 'Wimbledon Common', their socialist album.
Okay so perhaps they were being 'influenced' shall we say by Robert Wyatt's recent output, but the melange of Billy Bragg and Crass is really quite infectious. When Uncle Bulgaria sings "Wombling FREE!"
with that passion and commitment in his voice, you know this isn't about pleasant walks in the park; it's a manifesto, a promise of freedom and enfranchisement for all Wombles, wherever they toil.
Of course the last track, their cover of " My Boomerang Won't Come Back" lowers the political tone of events signifigantly, but notwithstsanding that the indignation on this album is palpable.
The next album was a team-up with the Wurzels. They were never this angry again.

de, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 15:18 (twenty years ago)

I hope you've not come here to mock a Womble?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago)

How could you say that? Surely my dedication to their ecofriendly brand of rock is clear?

de, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 15:24 (twenty years ago)

But to mention them in the same breath as the Wurzels! Begone foul heretic! OK so they are next to each other in my record collection...

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 15:25 (twenty years ago)

The 80s was a lean time for both acts, hence the collaboration. Ironic really, considering their 70s rivalry.

de, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I don't believe it!!!!!!!

No "Val Doonican Rocks! (...But Gently)" in Q's list!!!!!!!!!

Are they a bunch of divvies or wot?!??!?!?!?!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Apparently Geordie Mick from Prolapse has joined the Wurzels as Glokenspeil player sorry wrong thread

flowersdie (flowersdie), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Did you know that 'Minuetto Allegretto', the Wombles top 20 hit from 1974, is based on Mozart's Symphony No.41?

flowersdie (flowersdie), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Indeed, fiendishly clever creatures these Wombles

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 15:52 (twenty years ago)

given that they once tried to convince us that the leaden-footed, ponderous stodge of Oasis' Rock and Roll Star was one of the ten most exciting songs ever recorded, I can't say I'm particularly surprised they managed to fuck this up too.

coco, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Where the hell is 'Full On Mask Hysteria'
