Now Headbangers Ball has been back on MTV(M2 here in UK) for a while, how does everyone rate it?
Maybe you even feel nostalgic for Vanessa Warwick(or whoever did the American HB)
We can even have a taking Sides for old headbangers ball and new headbangers ball.
So lets discuss Headbangers Ball old and new.

Still not as good as bangers and mash.

ng, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:20 (twenty years ago) link

They play too many videos by hardcore bands (Hatebreed, Avenged Sevenfold, Bleeding Through, blah blah fucking blah). But of course, it's great to have it back at all.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

I miss Eddie Vedder and his knee-high silver Doc Martens.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago) link

What else qualified Vedder to be a Headbanger, other than his hair?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:26 (twenty years ago) link

We want him to hurt himself?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:27 (twenty years ago) link

Nichole I am quite clearly referencing Mr. Vedder's appearance on the program, circa the first month or so after Ten's release.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:28 (twenty years ago) link

The Ball totally rode the grunge jock when _Nevermind_ & _Ten_ & _BMF_ & _Dirt_ (or _Facelift_?) hit.

Got me there. I did forget that album was bang-worthy.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago) link

actually I'd say the Ball helped break grunge, so therefore didn't exactly "ride" its "jock."

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago) link

Ten isn't even ass-wiping worthy, I was being "clever."

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago) link

(laughter) Damn cyber-irony.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:33 (twenty years ago) link

Stence, my "jock" comment was based on watching a MTV Headbanger's Ball retrospective, which made it seem as if HB was trying to either surreptitiously incorporate grunge into their programming, or try to hang _Ten_ as the wave of flannel started to crest.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:43 (twenty years ago) link

at the time, "Headbanger's Ball" was probably more aware/prescient of grunge than "120 Minutes" (although the latter did "world premiere" "Smells Like Teen Spirit") (who says Geffen didn't push that album like crazy?)

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:44 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, the days of endless 'exclusive' interviews with that insufferably crap band The Almighty.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:46 (twenty years ago) link

Oh god i remembert the scottish band the almighty, they jumped every bandwagon going. But the bands irish lead singer Ricky Warwick was married to Vanessa. Hence them being on all the time.

Rock Bastard, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:48 (twenty years ago) link

The Almighty was a great band. Check your history, yo.

For me the primary difference between the old HB and the new one is that now I don't have to stay up as late to be disappointed that they didn't play the videos I wanted to see.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 21:33 (twenty years ago) link

Adam Curry > Ricky Rachtman, cause the former was actually a poseur instead of a wannabe poseur

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 21:35 (twenty years ago) link

it'd be nice if they'd break out some old videos, and of less of the hatcore crap. also, if vocalists with newer metal bands could stop sounding like they're trying to pass a stone, that'd be great.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:08 (twenty years ago) link

I can't watch the new stuff. Hatebreed and such. yawn.

Adam Curry > Ricky Rachtman, cause the former was actually a poseur instead of a wannabe poseur

heresy. I hated Adam Curry because I thought he'd rather hang out with Jon Bon Jovi than Bret Michaels. Not that I wouldn't either.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:02 (twenty years ago) link

I thought he'd rather hang out with Jon Bon Jovi than Bret Michaels.

Is there a fuckin' difference? Neither of those candy-asses have place on a show devoted to METAL!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:54 (twenty years ago) link

Did Downtown Julie Brown ever do Headbanger's Ball or is that just a tantalizing fantasy? (The first time I ever heard "Welcome to the Jungle" she introduced it.)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 00:26 (twenty years ago) link

I'm surprised Europe is getting the American Headbangers Ball. I thought when HB came back there would be a European or UK version. HB ran for years here after it stopped in America. Then they introduced Super Rock i think it was called. Kerrang was full of letters complaining that a blonde bimbo that didn't know anything about metal was the presenter and that they wanted Vanessa back.(I cant remember the name of the presenter)

Yeah, wtf WAS that?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 16 October 2010 03:43 (fourteen years ago) link

Superrock was my fucking jam. Basically that place in the Venn Diagram where 120 Minutes and Headbanger's Ball met. It was a goddamn godsend to 15-year-old me. I would kill for Superock playlists.

and they played rap too iirc. It was basically nerd-jock like Primus, Faith No More, Beastie Boys, Biohazard, Eric B and Rakim, etc.
