This album is kicking 100% of my ass

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

strongo, Matos, Siegbran, Tim, I am keen to hear how you like this stuff

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I am intrigued. Tell me more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm, its not really doing it for me - i found it a bit too fast for my liking (which makes me sound old, its just that i was expecting more a a metro area vibe a la "Meet me in Brooklyn). I like the Naive Jazz version of In My Arms (is it?). Ok, i am getting old. i will persevere though.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

it's house music, more or less - pretty brisk, yeah, as Jed notes, but so breezy and sweet and wistful - I too am old but this stuff makes me feel quite young

J0hn "When Come Back Bring Nose Candy" Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

:-)

and the textures, o man, the sorta Lionel Hampton meets Booker T. softsynth stuff on "Back to tha D" - delish I tells ya

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

after that description i have to put it on now!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

have you heard "Meet me in Brooklyn" J0hn?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i found it a bit too fast for my liking

that explains a lot. i noticed you floundering when the tempo went above 122bpm on friday. you need to get into poppers.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

No Jed I haven't! I was thinking that I ought to include the caveat "I am somewhat clued-out when it comes to dance music, so this stuff could be really behind the curve & I wouldn't necessarily notice." But at the same time - it's just got such an energy to it, not a high energy so much as a constant one, but with a real mellowness to the underlying beats that keeps the edge off for me - it just makes me wanna dance, which for me is the measure of a great dance record

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

122+ makes me fall over.

Stirmonster too is somewhat behind the curve as these things go*

Lig has Tejadaitis -- too many releases, not enough quality control and has always been second tier to me. I do love his 12" with Titonton Duvante and like the last one on Playhouse. My 4 Stars is too samey and speedy for me.

It's kinda funny how one of the big lines with him is how he broke the KSM non-color barrier (especially since somebody beat him to it in the first place, right?).

"My Old Friend" is completely gorgeous, I am in love with 1) the Bartender's Bible and 2) this album

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It's very similar to Morgan Geist's Environ album but not so good, i don't think (cos its too fast).

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't find it on soulseek...D4rn3113 share this ISH.

EAT FOOD.

its on slsk, i got its of it. it got a glowing review on absorb.org but im not so sure. its a little too spangly for me, after 'meet u in brooklyn' , which is epic and lush but not sickly, i was disappointed. not that i've really heard anythign else of his.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i far prefered his soul designer album to this.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

ddb I don't actually do any filesharing stuff (not entirely out of bein'-against-it which I'm not though for obvious [and also less obvious] reasons I am v. strongly in favor of people buying albums), sorry 'bout that!

The "too fast" criticism continues to baffle me this morning - it's very uptempo, but (I don't know how else to put this and I apologize in advance) the groove is so mellow - I can relate to being made nervous by stuff that's at v. high bpm and I have to be in the right mood for stuff that sounds fast to me. But "My 4 Stars" sounds like it's on cruise to me - lots of nice long legato sounds that sorts of smooth over the actual bpm count which is yes pretty high.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

JD...I buy albums, too many actually. If I download an album and it's bananas-good, ddb goes to the store with actual money. I respect your ideals and stuff, but cd's are expensive and I can't afford to buy, sound-unheard.

You feel me GOD!

Anyway, I DL'd the Fabrice Lig...not really feeling it.

ddb, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(I feel you DDB! If you lived in my neighborhood I'd happily run you off a copy, and as I say there are other reasons I don't fileshare much (Mac user, my own unreleased stuff on my harddrive makes me extraparanoid, etc) - so I was just more sayin' how come you won't find me on Slsk more than "o you must buy records")

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ten months pass...
O I just can't stop listening to "Meet Me in Brooklyn" the best disco nouveau track of recent years? I think so - better than "Timecode" better than "Miura" better than "Let's Dance and Freak" better than "There's a Drink in my Bedroom and I Need a Hot Lady" (as great as all of those tracks are) the whole thing just builds and builds and fills me with so much *JOY* - i couldn't be happier about music than right now listening to this.
