So in searching for tracks from the new PJ Harvey this afternoon, I found nothing but a bunch of fakes. This is a bad, bad sign. Not to be alarmist, but it reminds me of what happened on Kazaa more than a little bit.

Question is, what's the hot new p2p that all the ILX kids will be using a year from now? I hear good and bad things about BitTorrent - like that it's got a lot of users, and that it's very buggy. BitTornado is good for finding live concerts and such, but sketchy on the new records.

You should have been here last week. The dope was much better.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

since most people use slsk to find more obscure stuff I don't think this means the end of slsk. the pj harvey fakes have been out for almost a month now, though, and I'm surprised people are still sharing them.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I may have used it to find the non-fake PJ Harvey album last night.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

what is your slsk username????

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha - the files were probably leaked onto the kazaa network first! Soulseek is by far the superior p2p program for audiophiles and the like ! Long live the p2p - and down with the RIAA :)

Soulseek Forever, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I collect fake, corrupt, repeating mp3s.
If you can send a copy over to the folks at this blog:
http://www.noneinc.com/RIAAEM/RIAABlog.html
It would be much appreciated. thanks in advance. we also collect file name titles, anything to give us an idea of who is involved.

PeterALopez, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for the laugh, kenan!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

who gives a flying fuck anyway? pj-who-the-fuck-cares-harvey sucks ass, and i can still find plenty of non-fake pounding grooves and somatic response mp3s.

newnumbertwo, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

kenan, i think you ought to spend more time seeking your soul than soul seeking. the fake tracks are there for people like you.

mIRC and DC++ get new releases far quicker than slseek and Kazaa etc.
DC++ seems to be the choice of most people who leave slsk. So I guess thats the one thats growing fastest.

Andy Jay, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

DC++ is definitely the way to go, but Bittorrent is gaining.

largehearted boy (largeheartedboy), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

what DC++ channels do u recommend, and for that matter what mIRC channels?

cheers

I spent a lot of time digging for real versions of this album last week. Apparently somebody ripped it to their Discman and then made mp3's, and that was the version that spread all over the 'net. By Friday, someone else put up a good version that's named "retail."

But that's the first time in a while that that's happened to me. On the other hand, slsk crashes my computer every time I try to download the Bjork live box ... ?

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the good version has the letters "aaf" appended to the filenames.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

no, the good version is the one you buy in the store instead of stealing it.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the good version is when you shut up and stop being so smug

OCP (OCP), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Gotcha! It's not out until the 8th, thus buying it tonight would be impossible.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Why should anyone have to physically get in a vehicle, go down to a record shop to purchase music? Why don't they just sell albums online for crying out loud? Then people would be able to have the album right now and still pay for it, legally etc. if they chose? It defies belief that another week is necessary in the digital age. Another week for what? Distribution? Shrinkwrapping? It's just so incredibly stupid. Okay, end of rant. I realize there have been other threads along these lines.

Bimble (bimble), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i will buy mp3s when they cost the same price as a cd minus the relative cost of the packaging, media, and distribution overheads

no matter what the distribution mechanism becomes, the time thing will not go away. "The waiting" is 100% marketing for most cases. Even if there are no longer any technological hurdles preventing final mixes going right outta protools and onto your ipod immediately, you bet your ass some slimy guy is chucking darts at a desk calendar or running regression on which Matador records by longhairs or shorthairs did better in July vs. late August.

caspar (caspar), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

bittorrent is not the answer, since its model (which it works beautifully for) is geared towards high-availability, high popularity stuff. i was part of a small torrent community for low-rank, interesting music and it was ghost town half the time trying to get someone else to seed it. 90% of the time it was a 1 to 1 transaction, which isn't the point. there's some middle ground, I like the DC++ model but of course it's very junior high with all the social protocols.

perhaps there's something inbetween DC and bittorrent, where you join a community and give up x% of your hard drive space to mirror all the groups' files (which you also have access to if you want.) that way anyone in the community has forced redundancy instead of the usual leech or nice guy split on slsk.

Leaving my house makes me so mad!! Breathing oxygen really gets on my nerves, they should just put a tube down my throat and run it from my computer so I can get it off the net!!

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 3 June 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Johnny Fever OTM about the 'aaf' thing for this particular release.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 June 2004 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Way up thread someone asks for good DC++ channels - can I ask as well? I haven't been able to find a channel with consistently good quality stuff.

I do think slsk is just fine right now as well.

southern lights (southern lights), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I downloaded "Woman's Gotta Have It" by Jimmy Riley the other day, so life's fine with me right now

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I still love slsk (but would like it much less if I didn't cough up the $5 every month for benefits...queues can get huge). To plan ahead, though, I downloaded DC++ last night to give it a spin. I couldn't find anything I was looking for, but I was probably doing it all wrong. Where's a good faq?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the DC++ model but of course it's very junior high with all the social protocols.

can someone explain this to a curious non-DC++ user?

common_person (common_person), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
Why can't my Windows XP work computer bollocks-shite download slsk? Am I doomed to never reap its rewards?

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 26 August 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I installed the XP service pack 2 last night, and after rebooting, it informed me slsk had been "blocked". It gave me the option to unblock it, and it's worked since then. Your office pc may have been set up not to give you that option. The new XP service pack has a bunch of security updates that were probably set up the same for everyone in your office.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

xp service pack 2 automatically turns on the xp firewall, i'm told. which isn't a bad idea as long as you know it's happening.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone noticed slower internet speed due to the XP service pack 2?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.
Part of this is because XP-SP2 does more than merely "turn on the firewall", it opens and closes a bunch of ports, and to get all programs to work the way they used to, the end user has to go through a laborious process (at the command line) to re-open closed ports.
Details of the process involved are included partway down the page in this article

http://www.nme.com/news/109648.htm

slsk escapes again! i mean, edonkey?!!! who the f-ck?

piscesboy, Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

so is there any actual benefit to installing SP2?
cos looking at the list of things it does, i'm not so inclined to "upgrade"
i don't use IE or Outlook, have my own firewall s/w i'm running and have my ports configured as i'd like them (and stealthfully so)

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

RIAA Strikes AGAIN!
and to keep up with recent events with our favorite irrelevant multinational megalocongomerate of record companies.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

RIAA posting bad music files to deter illegal downloaders.

Sadly, this headline did not reveal the story I had hoped for.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, everyone please take special note of the INDUCE Act, probably the dumbest idea since the DMCA. And it was initiated by Orrin Hatch.
Super secret bit of mystery trivia: Orrin Hatch isn't not only a moronic senator, he's also spawned Brent O Hatch, the moronic lawyer who represents the morons of the SCO Group.
Is this a case of "Like Father, like son" or "Weenies of a Feather, Flock Together"?

Yeah, I managed to work out that some sort of download block was at play and got to attempting a sort-out...and then the server went down. Not my day.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ot: orrin hatch was also the brilliant mind behind an effort to repeal the ban on privately owned handguns in homes and businesses--and registration of rifles and shotguns--in the district of columbia.

"All too often, we read in the paper about yet another vicious murder carried out against an innocent District of Columbia resident. Try to imagine the horror that the victim felt when he faced a gun-toting criminal and could not legally reach for a firearm to protect himself. We must act now to stop the carnage and put law-abiding citizens in a position to exercise their right to self defense."

he's presumably less enthused about allowing firearms in the capitol building itself...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a BIG part time fan of both Senator Orrin Hatch and the company which makes those interdicting spoofing files, Overpeer. I figured it would be a good idea to have them team up. Here's the result:
