And they were pals of mine and I actually miss Philly sometimes, you know? And I'm blasting Wattle & Daub and i forgot what a great fucking 1-2-3 punch "The Author in Her Ear" & "Song of Mourning Dove" & "Ben Franklin Airbath" is. Sounds wonderful. They were true friends of Bunny Brains too. God bless 'em. You can say nice things about Fieldhands records and live shows here if you want.

One of those bands I have stuff around by that I really should actually get around to listening to. I remember one time a Fieldhands CD was given as a gift to friend Jake for his birthday or so, which pleased him greatly.

god bless the fieldhands and their offkilter undersea sing-a-long anglopop. also, praise be Ashtabula.

I loved this band & this thread has inspired a listening fest in the near future. I saw them live once at the Middle East Upstairs in Boston & was blown away.

I never got to see them live, although they played in Memphis, where I grew up, a few times. I'd see their records all over the place, due to the Shangri La connection, but I never heard them until I came to college in Missouri, when my mentor at the student radio station declared DISCUS as his favorite album of the nineties. When I went back to Memphis, I bought up the vinyl copies of everything. Except I still don't have The Call (Caul?) or In the Pineys. Bet I could find them used (or new) at Last Chance, though. I once left Wattle and Daub on repeat for a few hours on the air due to a dj absence and it never got old. I'll always associate the fieldhands with my student radio days, and that is a great thing.

Opening for them a few years ago was a genuine thrill. I wore out my copy of Gobs on the Midway in college - those singles are still great. I've stolen from them a lot over the years but luckily no one's noticed.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i found my copy of "in the pineys" last night while packing up records for the aforementioned move. if my stereo wasnt being moved, i would have put it on.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 4 June 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i remember when they toured with both gbv circa "bee thousand" and the grifters circa "crappin you negative"... great memories.

i remember playin w them at th ill fated Macintosh music festival w trumans water and bardo pond and guv'ner...they made sure we were properly lubed up before we played..beers were plentiful..i started swinging a chair around in front of the stage and the barmistress signaled the soundman to cut us off because someone had just told her they had overheard a band member say "we are gonna wreck this place"..im sure this was meant as a musical wrecking..Bob looked at me and said "You got moxie kid" and wiped my tears dry..We also played at Nicks steak house and I couldnt believe how powerful men in regular clothes could be playin their briny rock n roll

fieldhands were great. the only time I saw them live was was when we roadtripped from columbia MO for one of those shangri-la riverboat shows. bob malloy got all tangled in his mike cord and fell off the stage backwards. good times.

now I will have to pull out these records tonight ...

Oh, Discus finally got reissued. I revisited it not long ago, and it still sounds pretty great. Definitely more worthwhile than like 95% of the GbV product out there...

No vinyl reissue I guess?

Evan, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 03:30 (fifteen years ago)

Hey, we've had like 15 years to enjoy it on vinyl, haven't we...?

dlp9001, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 03:36 (fifteen years ago)

FWIW they were unhappy with the sound of the original lp.
(my bro does sound for TNV and he met the main fieldhand dude, is where I heard that)
I'm gonna buy a cd. So nineties.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 03:58 (fifteen years ago)

Well has it been easy to get on vinyl? You assume I own a hard to find vinyl copy from 1994!

Evan, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 05:50 (fifteen years ago)

one month passes...

I got the Discus cd on a trip to Memphis last weekend. They have vinyl copies at Shangri La, too, fwiw. It does sound a little clearer, I suppose, and some details stand out more than on the lp, but I don't think it's necessary to replace your vinyl copy with this new cd. Unless you want to support Shangri La and the Fieldhands, which was the motivating factor for me.

There's a pretty nifty club in Carrboro, NC too. It would also be sweet if they would tack on Greenville, Columbia, Athens & Atlanta. :-)

Hey can anyone comment on whether "The Caul" is any good?

Funny there is evidence of me saying I missed seeing them play in 2010, but no word from me about the time I DID get to see them around the same time... was it just a dream?

Evan, Thursday, 7 May 2015 19:58 (ten years ago)

have never heard^, but that gobs on the midway singles collection is full of goodness. never knew till today that david mitchell of the 3ds did the cover art for one of their 7 inches...
