Kinks. Get Muswell Hillbillies. If it doesn't pleasantly surprise you, nothing will.

Pack Yr Romantic Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the last records to blow me away were the rubble boxes and kaleidoscope's "tangerine dream". and a local band with no recordings (ergo no good to you)

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

alrighty. i think i had a mini kinks phase about 2 yrs ago but ill check this out.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

uh... BIG & RICH! Horse of a Different Color

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Why would you want to change your musical outlook forever? So you never want to listen to Beach Boys, Spector, Dylan et al ever again?

Get some techno. Buy everything with Richie Hawtin and Jochem Paap's name on it and crank it up until the neighbours complain.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe i should be a little more specific. itd be good if you could alert me to a particular movement/genre/record label/prolific artist that im not aware of and could begin obsessing over and devouring and absorbing.

of course im not gonna stop listening to that, but i want something completely fresh and new to me right now.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

someone alerted me to the presence of big and rich just 2 days ago. im afraid to check it out. it might take over my conciousness eternally.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly you need some 70's Elton John in your life.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate "your song" so much that i cant communicate it through words.

and does anyone actually listen to 80s or 90s elton john?

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Argentina's ska/
metal/jazz/punk/rock/reggae
scene is quite lively:

Bersuit great, and Los
Fabulosos Cadillacs
still kick some culo

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

hah, ill check that out.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

a particular movement/genre/record label/prolific artist that im not aware of and could begin obsessing over and devouring and absorbing.

this happened to me with 60s psych and garage. great for my ears, terrible for my bank balance. i've discovered more songs to like in the last 12 months than in the previous five years, and none of them are from the last 30 years.

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Buy Monteverdi's Vespers and as many discs of his Madrigals as you can. I like the Alessandrini versions on opus 111, and Parrot's Vespers on Virgin. Music that is simultaneously beautiful and strong.

de, Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

well ive got nuggets I and II so thats not gonna completely surprise me. but yea, the well of 60s garage rock is pretty bottomless.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

legowelt - disco rout
nas - get down; nas - rewind

"Youth of America" by the Wipers.

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Sun Ra and the Arkestra is a parallel universe to our own.

earlnash, Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

ive already spent some time in his universe. i had to go in blackface though. otherwise they kick you out.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Get some Webern.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Good call.

de, Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

well where should i start with webern?

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the complete string quartets by the Arditti Quartet.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The cover looks like this:

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

alright, thanks.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Get 'Blue Print' and 'Under Construction'

Jay-Z and Missy Elliot respectively. Is that too obvious?

Debito (Debito), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

nah, id been meaning to get those soon anyway. my knowledge of hip hop is relatively limited i think.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they have mind-blowing properties, and they're super fun. It will be an injection of freshness into your musical catalogue. Garuntee it!

Debito (Debito), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

who's gonna tell him to get CRUNK ?

astroblaster (astroblaster), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The various bands/folks in the Jewelled Antler tribe, such as Loren Chasse, Thuja, Stephen R. Smith, and Mirza.

Modern Japanese psychedelic & prog, like Acid Mothers Temple, Mainliner, High Rise, and Ohkami no Jikan.

These 'scenes' both made my head spin, providing retro-rocket propellant sufficient to keep me hurtling towards new musical galaxies, even well into my forties.

Also, the doomsludge experimental dronemetal thing is really good, best exemplified (IMHO) by Esoteric, Sunn o))), Khanate, and Earth.

Happy hunting!

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry, but when I read the title of this thread I immediately thought of Roxy Music's "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" off For Your Pleasure.

Probably the first 12 times I heard this song I laughed. A lot. It's melodramatic, pretensious, and sounds like some sort of parody. And the fake ending. But now when I listen to it, I think it's brilliant. For most of the same reasons. So pull out your old Roxy Music (you know you love it). It will blow your mind (cue guitar solo).

Mike Salmo (salmo), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Check out those Eno remasters.

Debito (Debito), Thursday, 3 June 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

whatweregonnadonowis go back...back into time...when the only people were cave men...and cave women...uh-huh..TROGLODYTES...
you need THE JIMMY CASTOR BUNCH in your life. doo-wop soul funk psychedelia break beats hendrix tributes salsa lounge-band intrumental cover versions: they don't call him the everything man for nothing. if he don't blow yr mind nothing will!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Is is too late to point out that Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is completely "Your Song"-free?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Part of the 'blow my mind' quality that you get from records comes from not expecting it to happen.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 June 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a far cry from Beach Boys but in some ways not really: Art Bears.

(Jon L), Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i found elton's tumbleweed connection (which has the distinct trait of having no radio hits on it) to be quite mind-blowing.

andybeta, Thursday, 3 June 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

today, just looking at what's right in front of me, i would say:

Ratatat Remixes Vol. 1 (guilty plezure)
The Complete Bukka White (Vocalion sides)
Keith Hudson Playing it Cool and Playing it Right
Upsetters Blackboard Jungle Dub
Al Green Call Me, I'm Still in Love with You
Joyce and Nelson Angelo
ZZ Top Tres Hombres
Animal Collective Sung Tongs
Ennio Morricone "Come Maddalena"

andybeta, Thursday, 3 June 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Thursday, 3 June 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

andybeta's post reminded me of Al Green's Belle Album, which alway gives me goosebumps. More recent releases, I'd recommend Afrofinger and Gel by Mu. Dude, that's some crazy shit.

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 3 June 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, my album of the (last) year!

andybeta, Thursday, 3 June 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom, clearly you need to stop listening to all this worthy old museum music! ;-)

If you're looking for something with immediate visceral impact, try Zen Arcade or New Day Rising by Husker Du -- both very sonically bracing, exciting, ice cold water to the face records. And you can hum along to 'em!

Or maybe try Terminal Tower by Pere Ubu -- if the first three tracks don't blow your mind, I don't know what will.

And of course I'll get laughed at for this, but if you have never heard My Bloody Valentine, buy yourself a copy of Loveless and crank the hell out of it. That record has changed a lot of lives, mine included.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Friday, 4 June 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

already covered loveless. listened to zen arcade but never really absorbed it completely. maybe ill try again.

and the thing is, the more music i listent to, the more i keep coming back to the canon.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Friday, 4 June 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom, it's clear that you need to enter the inevitable Steely Dan phase.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Friday, 4 June 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It happens to everyone eventually. It's inevitable.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 4 June 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

man, ive listened to Peg a dozen times in the last 3 days. its so sterile and white. im not sure how i feel about it still...

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Friday, 4 June 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

You may look back on those six or eight months of your life mildly bemusedly, but you'll never stop loving the records, and you'll never be quite the same.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Friday, 4 June 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay then, download "Show Biz Kids" and "King of the World" and be prepared for a surprise.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Friday, 4 June 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a Steely Dan phase. It was a nice time in my musical life.

Debito (Debito), Friday, 4 June 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll never forget mine. It was 92 or 93. I had a Roxy Music phase around then too.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 4 June 2004 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

man you werent wanky.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Friday, 4 June 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, Tom, for that matter, have you heard the first Roxy Music record?

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Friday, 4 June 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, i have. my wanky/glam phase was also 2 years ago. but i was 15. so i have an excuse.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Friday, 4 June 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the fact that Elton John is being pushed here, so I will recommend Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player, which is starting to be somewhat forgotten, I think. (I worry that you might have trouble getting past "Daniel," though. I like it, but suspect you wouldn't.)

(Barring that, how about the albums Joe Cuba did with Cheo Feliciano? I haven't heard them yet, but everything I've heard from them has been mind-blowing.)
