J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Please?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the opening paragraph is enough for me.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

oh you gotta get to page three, man:

His gripes would be tedious and trite -- mourning the music of yesteryear has long been a hip-hop sport -- if not for the fact that when it comes to the younger generation, Jean puts his money where his mouth is. To aid children in the U.S. and Haiti...

as though Bushwick didn't give tens of thousands back to the 5th ward, etc. etc. etc.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, at the very least the piece reminded me that "The Ecleftic" is one of the worst records I've ever heard.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

He's saving hip-hop from purgatory! Ha ha ha.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a couple Haitian friends who love Clef and I feel like I should play along

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, is this a NEW article?

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Wyclef even still have a record deal?

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I *like* The Ecleftic but COME ON.

Haha this AND Wednesday Morning Dump on the SAME DAY! Life is irreverent!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"I want to make healing street music. To address the things that matter -- you know, life, love," he explains. "To say something. Of course, keeping it sexy, because I'm very sexy."

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i think my cock just shriveled up and fell off

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, he's gotten WAAAAY better, believe me. the one two weeks ago is amazingly bad.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Best paragraph from that article is clearly:

"When I asked Jean where he sees himself in 20 years, he answered me without flinching. There was no talk of a Fugees reunion -- although he says he's not opposed to one. ("The world needs another Fugees record," he'd told me, adding that such a record would sell "like Michael Jackson numbers, like 'Thriller' numbers.")"

minolta (minolta), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

There needs to be more love for Pras.

Allyzay, Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Awesome. What a fool. There was that terrific footage of him at a festival in the UK a while back, where during a long and extremely whack break-down he ploughed through the crowd to a lighting rig in the middle of the audience, danced around on it for a while, before being slowly escorted by an enormous security entourage back to the stage.

It was about as spontaneous as the evolution process.

The Wanderer (thewanderer), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

JOHN FORTE JAILBREAK!!

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Silent But Deadly?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

[Wyclef Jean]
Yo I'm happy to be in the South
to set off my tour in the countryside
But who better to set it off for me than this man right here

[Kenny Rogers]
Yo this Kenny Rogers chillin on the country side
with men like Wyclef (uh-huh) Jerry Wonder (uh-huh)
Big Jack (mm-hmm) Big Beast (mm-hmm)
And we gon' do something like this for you

You got to know when to hold 'em (YEAH, YEAH!)
Know when to fold 'em (DJ's, DJ's!)
Know when to walk away (HIP-HOP, HIP-HOP!)
Know when to run.. (YEAH, YEAH!)
You got to count your dub-plates (GHETTO, GHETTO, GHETTO)
before you touch the turntables (ALL HOODS!)
Cause if you run out of big tunes
that means your sound is done (Y'ALL READY?)

Etc.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i luv salon but their music coverage sux. It's almost as bad as their video game coverage, which gives me tumors.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Gawd all the Fugees are completely insufferable - just GO AWAY.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, they did?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

not far enough away, apparently.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I still love "it doesn't matter"

dave k, Thursday, 3 June 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

video games are about the only thing salvaging my foul f*ckin' mood this morning, except that then I think about how they're not making Hitman: Contracts for the GameCube and about how when you go to Electronics Boutique these guys in X-Box necklaces start trying to pimp the X-Box to you as part of Microsoft's recent public-presence-saturation campaign, and then I just get pissed off again

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool kids in dumping on arguably-most-fearlessly-dilettantish-artist-in-music shocker. What, exactly, is wrong with the article? It recognizes upfront that there's nothing 'great' about Wyclef that's also hiphop, but it states nevertheless that he is one of the great artists who is also a hiphop artist. Why is strongo the only one here to recognize what a great (unlimited by genre) producer he is? Maybe I just feel corny self-deprecating dudes more than the average man.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i am sadly still proud of my unicef joke

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Wyclef has never produced a song I consider great, in any genre.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I have a sneaking regard for Wyclef... probably 'cause I ain't no cool kid. The article wasn't bad, just not exactly inspiring. For a Salon reader new to the artist, it's a decently helpful overview, nothing more.

I like Wyclef's Haitian/Creole stuff generally better than his signature bouncy-yet-weirdly-flat hip-hop stuff. There's a song "Yele", off of his first solo record (I think) that is very gorgeous in its way (similarly, examples of his reggae stuff like "Gunpowder" and "Diallo", while derivately Marleyesque, yet retain some serious beauty in their heartfelt earnestness... unlike this post *runs out of steam, hides*).

(ha, xpost and xpurposes w/ Shakey Mo.)

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

His singing, though, is bad. I mean bad bad, but now that falsetto-fixated rappers who can't sing -- like Andre 3000 or Pharell Williams -- are a hot commodity, bad bad is good bad

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Guess who's going to starting singing "Jonathan Demme!" into a phone in a bad bad falsetto now.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Party To Damascus" is the best thing Wyclef has done since "It Doesn't Matter". They're both great. Fact.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

'I feel like listening to some conscious music -- so throw on a De La Soul record.' And then, 'I feel like laughing -- throw on "Parents Just Don't Understand." I feel like getting on some gully, gangster vibe -- throw on Kool G Rap. Some universal hip-hop? Run DMC.'

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

And throughout, he hopped about the stage gleefully, dreadlocks trailing behind him, as if possessed by the music -- as if to say, "I'm having fun!"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

His singing is really good.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm actually kind of fond of Wyclef's work (hell, I dig that bonkers damn Bono collabo he did), but this article is fuckin' loopy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 3 June 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

anybody ever figure out what Bob Dylan's facial expression is meant to imply in that "Gone Til Novemember" video? It looks like disbelief to me.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 3 June 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Dylan's thinking of saying "play me some Pink Floyd, son, maybe I'll let you off". So, disbelief, yeah. ;)

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 3 June 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

it baffles me how wyclef gets so much credit in the mainstream press. i also hold a grudge against him for making canibus shit. or for making him totally obscure, anyway.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Friday, 4 June 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the misidentification of ornery people on ilx as "cool kids" never ceases to baffle me

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 4 June 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
fuck you, bitch!

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 26 July 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss JOhn.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 26 July 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

that "hardcore" turn he tries to do on Big Pun's Capital Punishment is totally wack. it makes me cringe when I hear it, it's so bad. something like:
"Fists of fury, you wouldn't like me when I'm angry
I turn Mr. Rogers Neighborhood topsy turvy
Foes and enemies meaning the same in the dictionary
This ain't Pictionary, all you see is the cemetary
Bodies, from World War I and II is there
You don't want a third war, that's nuclear warfare"

joseph pot (STINKORâ„¢), Monday, 26 July 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Did J0hn really leave 'cos someone wanted to turn ILX into a book!!!!???

Oh, and Anthony, I hope you weren't offended by my post above (wondering who the "fuck you, bitch!" was aimed at), I was jus' riffing. Lamely, of course, as is my wont.

David A. (Davant), Monday, 26 July 2004 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

the "fuck you, bitch" was aimed at JOhn, who I miss so much.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 26 July 2004 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Wyclef: please, no guitar skillz on stage

Cosmo Vitelli, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 08:36 (eighteen years ago)

attempted trem-picking on "star-spangled banner" gives huge lulz

J0hn D., Tuesday, 5 February 2008 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

I remember seeing on some show that Wyclef had a shark in a tank in the boot of one of his SUVs. What a cock.

jim, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

i mean lets say you're a wild card mobster who keeps telling people you're gonna feed them to the shark in your SUV, one day you know they're gonna feed you to the shark in your SUV so I don't even know why a wild card mobster not unlike Icarus would have a shark in their SUV.

da croupier, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe he was just trying to honor the stage's pre-ordained weight capacity?

nickalicious, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 16:21 (eighteen years ago)
