For school, I have to read a best-selling novel copyrighted 2000 or later. That's all of the guidelines...nothing else. I'm not big into books, though, so could you suggest me some of your favorites?

"The Intuitionist" by Colson Whitehead. It's only about 200 pages, but it's a somewhat dense read. Good if you're a fan on Pynchon.

Devil in the White City is pretty cool though.
What about Carl Hiaasen? He should have a couple of potboilers with post 2K production dates. You can read his stuff in an afternoon and it's a whole lot of fun.
