"I could explain in more depth the diversity and impact of the Residents' contributions to modern music, but I'm gonna save that for the next round, when they're likely to go against someone slightly more formidable than BeBop Deluxe, who are worthy, but not that worthy."

Why do I still get mad over subjective opinions? I am insane
― David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 3 June 2004 23:41 (twenty years ago) link
The Buzzcocks vs. Wire: Both English bands emerged in the rush of "We can do that" enthusiasm inspired by the Sex Pistols' (and other, lesser punks) assaults on musical sensibilities in the UK, circa 1976-77. Both of their debut albums (Wire's Pink Flag and The Buzzcocks' Another Music in a Different Kitchen) took the basic idiot punk idiom and carried it into far more thoughtful places. But over the years, the Buzzcocks never strayed too terribly far from the snappy verse/chorus/energy of punk, while Wire left that behind in pursuit of some of the most challenging music ever to be issued under the name of "rock." Discounting the one album issued under the name "Wir," Wire have also managed to keep their basic line-up intact for nearly 30 years, while the Buzzcocks have formed, broken up, reformed in a variety of permutations over the years. That consistency and continuity (even when they don't play together for years at a time) is part of what makes Wire so exceptional and extraordinary: these guys know how to play with each other, and the noises they make together are truly greater than the sum of their respective parts. The greater band: Wire.
Dude, did you ever HEAR the "Wir" album? I rest my case.

...we eliminate vocal groups (N'Sync, Boys II Men, etc.); if a group's members don't or didn't at some point provide the primary instrumentation for their music, then they really don't deserve scrutiny for all time worst band. It's kind of a gimme that groups backed by anonymous session musicians are gonna score higher on the suck scale.

> Money says he eventually tracks the links > and comes here to complain.
You would have won the bet if you didn't add the words "to complain" at the end of the sentence: I tracked the links, I am here, but I don't have anything to complain about, since I don't get mad over subjective opinions. I guess I might even be flattered. Um, kinda.
I've been getting "you suck" letters in response to my music criticism for about 20 years now . . . so I'm sorta numb to 'em at this point. This current round is kinda ironic, since I actually gave up on print music criticism last year . . . see:
http://www.metroland.net/arts_feature.html
I hadn't heard of ILM, but y'all seem to generate a lot of content and traffic . . . there's a lotta good stuff on this site that I see as I forage around . . . so I'm off to explore.
Oh, and, yes, Elvis, I do own and am quite familiar with the Wir album.
And, just for the record, I can't stand Television (the band), and I think Clutch are the best live band I've seen in the past few years, hands-down, although their fans are, indeed, a bit on the scary side up here in Upstate New York.
