Nina Sky - Move Ya Body

There are a couple riddim threads that mention this and there are threads on the coolie riddim but lets discuss this song on its own.

Thoughts? Single of the summer? Overrated?

I think it's great, personally. I love the electro-diva like vocals midway through especially, the part about "can you feel the beat within my heart". Wonderful really.

djdee2005, Friday, 4 June 2004 07:04 (twenty years ago) link

I dig it too! I just gave a four. 4 great words. also..aren't those twins HOT! Are they waiting for enough hype on the single to announce the album?

cRaiG (craig!), Thursday, 17 June 2004 04:59 (twenty years ago) link

It's great! It's about lesbians! Hooray!

Sym (shmuel), Thursday, 17 June 2004 05:32 (twenty years ago) link

It's about lesbians! But wait, aren't words like "him" used in the song?

, Thursday, 17 June 2004 06:38 (twenty years ago) link

four weeks pass...
I think it's kind of peripherally about "making the fellas" do whatever, but it definitely says "move ya body girl...don't stop, you're makin' me hot...from head to toe." Pretty Sapphic.

Fantastic track.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 16 July 2004 22:14 (twenty years ago) link

I think what I like so much about it is the juxtaposition of the kind of carefree, fun vocal with the somewhat sinister sounding what-the-fuck-ever-that-is-atariesque-beeping sound. This song has gotten way under my skin. I missed the boat on this one a bit.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 16 July 2004 22:20 (twenty years ago) link

great track but they were shockingly wooden on totp the other week

Awesome single... really gets under your skin. Am contemplating getting the album.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 17 July 2004 10:48 (twenty years ago) link

May I also lend my vote of recommendation? Album... worked, but didn't set me on fire like this.

I know i'm gonna sound like a snob saying this, but Coolie Dance has tired reaaaaaaaaly quickly.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 17 July 2004 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

Nina Sky shouldn't have tried it.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 17 July 2004 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

it's an awesome track but if you're going to buy anything, just get the single. the album isn't too hot.

adam west (adamwest), Saturday, 17 July 2004 17:31 (twenty years ago) link

I heard this on TOTP last week and, despite a slightly ropy performance (as referred to above), immediately loved it.. went out and bought the single the next day. It has a funny technical fault though. Something isn't quite looped 100% perfectly so I hear the downbeat at the beginning of each 2-bar period as being slightly delayed/sluggish. After a while I can't listen to the record without hearing that and it really annoys me.

David (David), Saturday, 17 July 2004 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

I love this, too.

re: the lyrics, I think that they allow for two interpretations: you could see the first few lines as setting the scene, after which the song jumps continously between the perspective of the girl and the male "he" alluded to in the first verse (i.e., when they sing "you're making me hot!", they're actually singing from the male's perspective); or it's a straight-ahead lesbian fantasy, withe the fact that the object of the protagonist's desire "makes the fellas go" being just one more factor that makes her more desirable. Both concepts are kinda interesting.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 17 July 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago) link

Some girls dance with women, knowin that it gets them attention / Daniel_Rf wants to get in with them / so pass me a drink and let's roll

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 17 July 2004 18:38 (twenty years ago) link

For you ILX trivia fans out there, I am the third ILXor to have been incorporated into the lyrics of this song; the first two were Jon Williams and Ian, in a post by (if memory serves me well) Sick Mouthy.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 17 July 2004 19:45 (twenty years ago) link

I can't wait for the ILX concordance to come out.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 17 July 2004 20:54 (twenty years ago) link

I know i'm gonna sound like a snob saying this, but Coolie Dance has tired reaaaaaaaaly quickly.

I disagree; in fact what I love about it is that it is endlessly reinterpret-able, so its incredibly hard to get tired of, and very stripped-down in its instrumental form. Endlessly replayable as well.

djdee2005, Sunday, 18 July 2004 00:07 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah Coolie Dance has been floating about for a year now and has been rinsed about twice as much as any other riddim, so I'd hardly call it a flash in the pan.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 18 July 2004 06:40 (twenty years ago) link

I saw them on TRL and they can dance about as good as I can (which is to say not at all). They just did the akward lean into left foot, lean into right foot dance, but it was sort of endearing.

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 18 July 2004 17:19 (twenty years ago) link

sort of endearing

Very endearing. The whole thing has a classic '80s Hispanic NYC vibe to it (esp. that 'can you feel the beat, can you feel it..' bit). What really makes it for me are the vocals.

David (David), Sunday, 18 July 2004 17:28 (twenty years ago) link

Haha that's exactly what I love about it too!

djdee2005, Monday, 19 July 2004 04:14 (twenty years ago) link

Me too, I just hadn't ever thought about it before!

They said on the TV program that they met at art school, I think. Or maybe it was cosmetology school.

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 19 July 2004 05:17 (twenty years ago) link

I kinda hope it was astrology school.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 19 July 2004 05:18 (twenty years ago) link

I thought they were twins?

cis (cis), Monday, 19 July 2004 05:48 (twenty years ago) link

They met on a crowded dancefloor. They felt the beat within each other's hearts.

djdee2005, Monday, 19 July 2004 05:59 (twenty years ago) link

I like that answer as it implies lesbianism (possibly incestous lesbianism!)

Anyway, some type of school was discussed by them at some point. Nina Sky want us to get our educations when we aren't in the club listening to their club bangers.

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 19 July 2004 06:16 (twenty years ago) link

Someone point me to a DL so I can hear this goddamn thing already.

Hot single, hot duo, hot riddim. Coolie Dance is great. Jook Gal-Move Ya Body are my dancehall weapons right now. The Vybz Remix is hot too.

The intro to the album made me laugh very, very hard.

The rest of the album, though, is like having two slightly dirty Beyonces, which happens to be my new favorite masturbatory fantasy.

haha i think i mustve missed this thread, good to know after all these years that "kinda lesbian" wznt just my own secret random shame. i believe i wrote something about "clasping reggaeton to their identical twin bosoms" or something once as well... so wrong.

one time i was at park royal doing some late nite bowling would u believe, and 'oye mi canto' came on, and everyone knew it somehow, and i wz drinking a coke, and it wz all like this sudden, glorious fucking... EPIPHANY of freestyle international latinoid ladydance rollerrinking booty america and basically yeah all the things a londoner can only fetishize from afar. you do know i'm a cynic, right.

<a href="[Removed Illegal Link] off'</a> is typically not worth ur time trying to resist. and duh OF BLOODY COURSE they felt like doing a remix of 'get it shawty'.

So excited for new material - 'The Other Side' was next level. The singles from this have been a bit too in line with current Eurobosh trends for my liking but still with a much subtler touch. Excited to hear the whole thing.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 14:57 (twelve years ago) link

There is a touch of eurobosh, sure, but the second half of the E.P. especially just hits new levels of sonic gorgeousness.

i actually think the two songs they trailed this with are by far the weakest

"bright lights" is the equiv of dawn's "faith"! that drop!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 15:04 (twelve years ago) link

It was all I could do to choke down the first track on this. Is there anything dark and interesting on this album, or did Nina Sky somehow turn into a Natasha Bedingfield tribute band without me noticing?

Evan R, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 15:10 (twelve years ago) link

Are dark and interesting always synonymous?

I want to smother him in electronic butter. (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 15:11 (twelve years ago) link

No, but I would settle for either over the Radio Disney trip of "Starting Today"

Evan R, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 15:13 (twelve years ago) link

Try Never Kissed You which seems to be becoming the consensus star pick. It definitely gets better in the latter half of the EP.

REV LION (The Reverend), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, 'Day Dreaming' should not have been the lead single.

Comatose is stunning. About 25% slower than you expect it to be in the best way possible.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 15:37 (twelve years ago) link

"OMG this track is just ::old sample:: with someone singing and/or rapping over the top" is not the kind of a criticism I expected to be coming from you, Rev?

I want to smother him in electronic butter. (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 15:39 (twelve years ago) link

not really a criticism, just pointing it out. it's kinda jarring to me cause of my familiarity with the original. still probably the best track here.

REV LION (The Reverend), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 15:41 (twelve years ago) link

Memphis Bleek/Jay-Z "1, 2 Y'all" is still prob my fave "UFO" 1TJ tho. WATCH WHAT YOU SAYIN ON THE RAAADDDIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

REV LION (The Reverend), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

This still feels like a massive step down from The Other Side EP to me. Nothing on it nears "Too Long To Let Go"

Evan R, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 16:02 (twelve years ago) link

I mean, it's more straight up dance and less freestyle... but part of their appeal is the variety of different flavours they tackle? idk.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 16:04 (twelve years ago) link

Feels like there's less variety on this one, but I'm probably bring too many biases to the table to judge, since I much preferred their occasional R&B forays (or their recent Major Lazer/Creep collabs) to this stuff. This just feels like a step away from the creative reinvention they've been teasing for a while, so it can't help but seem like kind of an anti-climax for me

Evan R, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 16:18 (twelve years ago) link

No, I agree. The Other Side is a stronger album, and the CREEP collaboration is breathtaking compared to some of this. But some of the last EP needed to grow on me and I already love Heartbeat and Comatose, so I'll let the rest have a chance.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 16:25 (twelve years ago) link

So will I totally hate The Other Side, then, if I like this?

(Then again, I thought I didn't like CREEP but it turns out after hearing the Nina Sky collab, actually, I do.)

I want to smother him in electronic butter. (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 18:32 (twelve years ago) link

I don't really think The Other Side and Nicole & Natalie are radically different - they're both based around what I think of as the essence of Nina Sky. If anything it's N&N which codes as "darker" to me - The Other Side is far lighter, more summery, more based around their freestyle influences. And the dance influence on N&N is being way overstated. But I haven't listened enough yet.

They were great to talk to earlier!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 18:35 (twelve years ago) link

Um. You won't hate the Other Side at all. There are one or two tracks in line with this, a couple more that are more like 'Never Kissed You' and a few that are more latin freestyle than that.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 18:35 (twelve years ago) link

oh fuck i used capital letters in a non-sports thread, lol

maybe i'll just go back to them

lex pretend, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 18:36 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I don't think 'The Other Side' is dark at all - it feels more tossed off, if anything, but it's an energetic sort of tossed off. A few (but not many) tracks here feel overthought but I've only given it one or two spins and it's v. good.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 18:39 (twelve years ago) link

this is pretty poppy... "heartbeat" and "everytime" are really good. if they were by robyn they'd be in every publication's top 30 of the year.

tauheed & cambria (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 18:40 (twelve years ago) link

For me, it's basically all about the close harmonies they're singing on "sew your row back up, I never kissed you babe" (or whatever it is they're singing, ha ha, I can't understand Queens accents any more) that just send shivers down my spine. The chord they end on is just... wau.

I want to smother him in electronic butter. (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

i really like the final three songs on this

tauheed & cambria (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 18:59 (twelve years ago) link
