strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 4 June 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i remain undecided, but now i have to go to work. where my fellow employees would probably love this.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 4 June 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

(also i am secretly hoping this thread will destroy ilm once and for all so i can get more work done at home.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 4 June 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this about the Garfield movie?

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

follow the link, dumbass!!

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

CTI would be ok

I actively dislike all the TM solo stuff I've heard so far, and, though I'm afraid to download this, I shed a tear for the man.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That review was fun to read, though I'm not sure I agree with the views expressed therein.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

This is so unsurprising. Morrison has got to be in the running for the smuggest man in indie rock.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not?

xpost

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

the vitriol in that little review is amazing, nice work

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Brent D. hates Animal Collective.

andybeta, Friday, 4 June 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha, I used "smug" to describe that fucker before.

SOON TO BE AN EX PLAN FAN (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with o nate. Comparing terrorism with shitty indie music = dud.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 4 June 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's more like making jokes about shitty indie music acting as an incitement to terrorism = dud, but whatever.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 4 June 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Brent D get a kickback from PBR to mention it in every review he writes?

he does mention it quite a few times

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd say thats a literary crutch

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 4 June 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

calling it "literary" is giving it way too much credit.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 June 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearlake 'Cedars [Bonus Track]'
Poor call - This bored me. Brent Dicrescenzo loves Blur and other lame bands from England. I will never trust his ratings ever again.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The Wrens 'Meadowlands'
Poor call - Ryan Pitchfork apparently loves dull indie rock. I trust his reviews almost as little as I trust Brent Dicrescenzo's.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I understand what's unsavory about this, ironic Britney covers and shit like that annoy me too, but I'm starting to get this feeling that the idea here is that treating rap with any affection other than polite, distant reverence just really rubs (indie?) people the wrong way. you can nod your head to the beat but you're not allowed to rap along.

I'm kind of impressed at how well Travis nailed the syllables and inflection of the verses.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't heard the song in question, so I can't say how good it is. But Brent D's hyperbolic show of shame and horror that an indie rocker could affect a hip-hop pose seems like a symptom of someone who has unresolved rockist issues. The assertion that music should have "integrity" (whatever that means) is another tip-off.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

But at least when I finish one of his sentences I'm still looking forward to the next one, which is more than I can say for many other music writers. I just wish he displayed more of a sense for music qua music.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The song is REALLY bad though.

Also, Dismemberment Plan using "Back that ass up" live - C/d?

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if the reaction would be any different if it was J0hn D instead of Travis M.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

For some reason I found moves like that completely excusable with the Plan, but Travis solo is just revolting

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, would Brent have cared so much about Travis covering Ludacris if he had done it with the Plan in the middle of the breakdown of "OK Joke's Over"?

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's because the Dismemberment Plan was fun, and Travis solo is "fun"

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc and Sonny OTM. I reserve the slightest glimmer of hope that Travis' album will be better than the stuff on his site, but right now he's like on the Mike Doughty level of post-breakup disappointments.

Also, Brent needs to reserve his vitriol for bigger and better targets.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

this is not any worse/better than anything by the violent femmes, is it?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

What a piece of shit track. God, I'm tired of these ironic rap covers (remember "Boyz in the Hood?"). Worse yet, it may not even be ironic! It's hard to tell, given his cocksure enthusiasm here. Either way, it's sickening that this fellow didn't have the quiet dignity to not release this garbage. This is the kind of shit that keeps people from taking public office.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

John Kerry Loves Himself Some Hip-Hop

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to the first minute of it and turned it off cause I got embarrassed that people heard me listening, but I do not think it's good. I don't think it's ironic. I think he really likes the song. I do too, but it would sound equally shit if I covered it. It was just a stupid idea.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 4 June 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's more like making jokes about shitty indie music acting as an incitement to terrorism = dud, but whatever.
-- Barry Bruner (brune...), June 4th, 2004.

I'm under the belief that you can joke about anything in the entire goddamn world you feel like, as long as it's funny. Brent D. is not NOT fucking funny. Ever.
