Is there any point in getting Citizen SD when one has approx half of the albums? I'm really turned off by the concept of not respecting the album/CD breakdown, but I'm pretty tempted by the object itself..

The credits are bungled too, without the track-by-track breakdown that Aja and Gaucho used to have, which is key considering they were getting close to a different drummer per track by the end.

Why would SD especially favor that material?
Isn't their trajectory in the '70s largely about trying to perfect their sound? No surprise that they would be less interested in playing what they considered to be inferior, or at least less-polished, material.

yeah, was gonna say that, more or less. i mean those guys do not seem especially proud of Katy Lied.

accepting setlist suggestions for european tour (which I will ignore), rehearsals soon, perhaps a 30 minute Glamour Profession is in order4:30 AM Apr 7th from web

― baaderonixx, Thursday, 28 May 2009 16:07 (fifteen years ago) link
These shows sound great - I totally understand why they'd choose this album. Their newer material definitely sounds a lot more like the late 70s stuff than the early 70s stuff.
30 minute Glamour Profession would be just about the best thing ever. Still think there should be an Italians Do It Better remix of this song.
― Moodles, Thursday, 28 May 2009 16:11 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah - I love Glamour Profession. First one I think about when I think about Gaucho (which happens a lot). Not necessarily the best on that one, but somehow it seems to encapsulate the whole vibe.
― baaderonixx, Thursday, 28 May 2009 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link
heh, pretty sure I think about gaucho on a daily basis. it's been a slow process going from being the only pre-90s SD I didn't really care for to (probably) top 10, all-time fave status. but I guess steely dan the band has been like that for me, generally speaking.
and "babylon sisters" is the one that captures everything about the album for me. but "glamour profession" is awesome too, obv.
I'm genuinely surprised it isn't well-liked! too long? I would take it over the title track on aja in a heartbeat.
― original bgm, Thursday, 28 May 2009 17:09 (fifteen years ago) link
The last time I saw Steely Dan, maybe last year, the woman next to me insisted on high fiving me after each song, the entire show. That alone may keep from any of these shows.

― calstars, Friday, 29 May 2009 03:19 (fifteen years ago) link
They played "Time Out Of My Mind" as the very first song on the show two years ago. If I had to pick one of the three LPs, I'm going RS
― Stormy Davis, Friday, 29 May 2009 06:06 (fifteen years ago) link
er, strike that "My" outta there, blah
anyway, gonna try to do all three of the LPs, screw the fan vote thing, but depending on funds probably going to end up with just Gaucho & RS
― Stormy Davis, Friday, 29 May 2009 06:09 (fifteen years ago) link
i don't wanna know what these tickets cost. i would probably do gaucho though, and then go out for szechuan dumplings at mr. chow.

hah, that's great.
xpost:when I saw them last year, during the "skate a little lower now" part of the song, the band started jamming for a few mins while becker yammers to the crowd. talks about spending an evening with your lady friend, having some drinks, and then doin' some work w/her. lots of innuendo and crowds cheering accordingly.
kind of grossed me out but I can see how the dan would think that it was a funny thing to do. sort of their m.o.
