Rock and Roll Jeopardy?

Later this summer, I'm going to Los Angeles for a couple of weeks, and was wondering if that RnR Jeopardy show is still being produced. I think that I should be reimbursed for all the useless music info I store in my craw.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 4 June 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Who are the morons that play this game? I'd bet almost anyone on ILM could crush the typical RnRJ contestant.
I'm not sure if they're still producing it, though. I think the most recent one I've seen was in 2002, so my guess is no.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 4 June 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

My mom always tells me about how much people win on RRJ.
"A woman from Ohio got $12,000 for knowing useless stuff about music nobody listens to, Huk-El, and she did it in half an hour," she says. "How much did you make last year?"

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Friday, 4 June 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course, there would be a price for winning --- public humiliation.
I could imagine feeling flush while stating on national television,

"What is "The Final Countdown"?

peepee (peepee), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I was a contestant on "Name That Video" in 2001. I won $4,600.00 (but I blew it on an REO Speedwagon video and didn't win the SUV).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I was a contestant on "Rock & Roll Jeopardy" very early in its run -- the ep aired in September 1998. Won $5,000, which at the time was the cap on winnings (damn - if they scored actual dollars like regular Jeopardy, I'd have had $22K). I'm pretty sure the show's run is over, though.

But what's this about public humiliation factor? My very first response on the show was "What is 'Disco Duck'?," and later in the round I got to say, "Who are the Funky Bunch?" All true.

Joseph McCombs, Friday, 4 June 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Who are the Funky Bunch
I can totally remember that line being spoken on TV from that show.

Was it with Jeff Probst or with that woman who's now in commercials?

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff Probst did R'n'R Jeopardy. Karen Bryant -- former MTV blink-and-you'll-miss-her VJ -- hosted "Name that Video", and now does blink-and-you'll-miss-her spots in commercials (most recently in the "boot-camp-for-computer-buyers" ad).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I remember that show! Damn, I might actually have seen you on it!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"Name That Video" I mean.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yes joseph, but could you match wits with the lead singer of sugar ray? that guy levelled all the competition during celebrity rnr jeopardy, much to my amazement.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't remember his competition being too steep.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

touche. but i always pictured him as somewhat of a mook.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 4 June 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Karen Bryant was (at least briefly) on ABC Overnight with Anderson Cooper.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 4 June 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave Mustaine impressed me when he was on

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I would love to take Mark McGrath on in a round of trivia. I would also love to take Mark McGrath, but that's for another board. In the meantime, I should add that they used me saying "What is Fun, Fun, Fun" in the commercials for about two years.

But getting back to Mr. McGrath -- his competition was nothing. He answered questions about Graham Nash faster than Graham Nash did!

I've never seen "Name That Video" -- when/where was that on?

Joseph McCombs, Friday, 4 June 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never seen "Name That Video" -- when/where was that on?

Early 2001

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 June 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I barely remember it. Was it on VH1 or was it syndicated? (Or am I thinking of that really bad show on MTV hosted by Ahmet Zappa?)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 4 June 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Strictly VH1

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 June 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, it's all coming back. There was a very short time where VH1 went gameshow crazy. Never Mind the Bollocks or something was pretty bad, regardless of Marc Maron's involvment.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 4 June 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Never Mind the Buzzcocks", which was a weak cousin to the British show that shared its name.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 June 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Marc Maron.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Friday, 4 June 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved Vidiot Savants on MTV with Greg Fitsimmons (or something..) He was pretty good at insulting the contestants without them knowing it.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 4 June 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, that's right Alex. I knew I didn't have the right name.

Also, I like Marc Maron too. I was sad to seem him hosting that show.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 4 June 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I just called up his website and he has this on the frontpage: Popcorn is a good analogy for show business. Every time you make popcorn, there are always those fluffy, white, happy popped pieces that are fun to eat and look at and everybody likes them.
But there are also always those burnt, hard kernels at the bottom that don't pop. You know why they don't pop? They don't pop because they have integrity.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Friday, 4 June 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm. It seems like the end of that line would be "they don't pop because they're a piece-a-shit."

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 4 June 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Never Mind the Buzzcocks", which was a weak cousin to the British show that shared its name.

my never mind the buzzcocks highlight was looking at the screen one day at a lineup of five guys who all looked vaguely like they might've once been the lead singer of loverboy. the contestant's job was to pick out the actual ex-loverboy singer out of the lineup. there in the lineup, to my surprise and horror, was my friend dave.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 4 June 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that's one of the only episodes I ever saw.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 4 June 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i think that's one of the few episodes that was ever produced. i think that one was canceled even faster than the zach galifianakis late-night talk show (which i kinda liked, but apparently no one else on earth did).

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 4 June 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked Zach's talk show and was bummed when VH1 pulled the plug. I was pleasantly surprised with his cameo in Bubble Boy, so that sort of lifted my spirits.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 4 June 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
So if we held an ILM RnR Jeopardy tournament, who would win?
Sure, you might be able to name all of Labradford's albums and every person who has been a member of the Cure, but what about "mainstream" rock trivia?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 20 June 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, i find that the ppl who know all the obscure shit are also the ones who kick ass at the really lame music trivia.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

ten months pass...
just reviving this thread briefly in honor of my Jeopardy! audition today. wish me luck, folks. oh, and any help from previous RnR Jeopardy! or regular Jeopardy! triers-out is much appreciated...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Good luck!

Biggest advice point is one you've heard a million times: Go With Your First Instincts. This maxim saved me in Final Jeopardy on R&RJ.

Another important thing to keep in mind -- though this was more true for R&RJ than for regular jeopardy -- is that they're looking for entertaining, affable people as much as they are knowledgeable people. Knowing your shit is great, but if you mumble or seem unpleasant or moribund, you'll make for bad TV -- so smile like you mean it, speak very loudly, enunciate very clearly, and either be perfectly mannerly or perfectly arrogant (whichever is more in line with your natural personality) to maximize your odds of getting a callback.

Let us know what happens!

Joe McCombs, who would love to know the best means/service to convert his sole VCR copy of his R&RJ appearance to digital format for posterity

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Ken, my friend Leslie's auditioning today too. If you see her, say hi!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

thanks joe! johnny, is yr friend's audition in SF?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

R&RJ is of a previous era; when video music channells cared about music related shows rather than celebrity gossip show.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

(Why is my typing so much worse today?!)

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Ken, yeah. She's in SF.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

well, no dice for me or Johnny Fever's friend alas. only two of the 100 or so hopefuls passed the test. feel like i did alright, though. was actually easier than i was expecting.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Ken!
What was the test? Just written?

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

yes, written. 50 questions. 8 seconds to answer each one. 100 ppl. all in a conference room at the W Hotel. 8 ppl per round table. easy to cheat if you wanted to.
