Has anyone used this?

I was originally looking at the Fostex MR-8 but it looks cheap and will cost another $500 in Compactflash cards just to get to record a couple songs. This one at least allows for me to use my computer's ample disk space to record an sequence tracks.

Also, if you've got any better suggestions, my budget for this is $500. Thanks.

looks great. how much is it?

Musiciansfriend.com has it at $400. So, I'm guessing that you could get it through a chain store for about $350 after minimal haggling. Either way, I think $400 is good deal if the thing is reliable. It comes with a version of Cubasis VST, which sounds decent enough unless you want to get super into post-production. But if that's the case, this controller probably isn't for you, anyways.

The combo of real hardware / PC interface could be really nice.

I can see it being great for Cubase or Reason.

I can't really find out what "Cubasis VST" is. I am under the impression that it is a limited version of Cubase. HRM.

Have you ever fantasized about becoming a professional recording artist?

The software sells for $75 USD on amazon.co.uk so it probably isn't that powerful but it looks to be on par with the hardware that it corresponds to. Either way, I am excited. It looks like fun.

i think i have cubasis vst... it's a weak version of the real thing if you ask me. i have the tascam us-122...and it came with a cheesy version of the software.

with that beast, vst might work better. i have latency issues if i want to use my 122 as both input and output at the same time. (i'll hear the guitar note about half a second late... just enough to totally lose the feeling of where i am.) so i use it to record input and then pump the audio out on my sound blaster live or whatever...

but i got what i paid for. the 122 is much cheaper than the 428. i need better software to get sweet, low latency duplexness only through the 122. i don't mind my double device setup, but it was disappointing at first.

MSP, do you have a PC or Mac?

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Friday, 4 June 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i have both... but use the pc for recording at this point. the ibook is mainly my wife's machine... (although, i'm free to play with it or use it at any point.)

why?

I was wondering if you were using the mac for this, as I will be. Tascam mentions that the PC version of Cubasis ships with the product but that the mac version does not. It looks like they have a download on their site, but I'm not on a mac so I can't see if it works well. I'd hate to buy it and then not have it work...

yeah, i seem to recall the cd i got having only the pc version of it. i cant' tell you much. where are you buying it? if you're buying it from a local mega music store like sam ash or guitar world or whatever, they'll usually give you 14 days to return it for a minor restocking fee. of course, that sucks, i know. they'll often help you with problems. i'd go talk to someone actually at one of those stores that's an expert. somebody that uses a mac as well. those guys aren't so bad to talk to. less annoying than the guitar technician types. just watch out for the sales pitch.

Ugh. I hate Guitar Center. I always feel extremely pressured to solo when I am in there.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Friday, 4 June 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i feel your pain... i wouldn't be caught dead trying to play the guitar in one of those stores if i can help it. odd moment in a music store #2425... i sat down and starting playing the piano cause i love to drool over the fancy shit and an extremely attractive guitar store employee... an actual female... came over sat down next to me and proceeded to chat me up.

as if there isn't enough mojo loss from just touching an instrument in one of those places. i, a married dude, don't need some really nice hot hipster girl coming over and talking to me about t. monk.

i was unnerved.

but the good thing is that you're going to ask them about tascam shit which means you talk to different dudes... who will theoretically be ugly and very nice studio nerds.
