Masta Killa - No Said Date

Oh man, this is so good. For all those looking for a mid-90s style Wu album, this is that shit. Sure, it took him 10 years for his solo to come out...
It features the entire Clan, production by RZA, MAthematics etc...makes the Ghostface pale by comparison. I'm serious!

has this got "back to school" on it? that was nice. i can't see me getting too excited though, but maybe that's my problem. what're the standout tracks?

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's got "back to school".
Nicest tracks are "Love Spell", "DTD" (with Ghostface and Raekwon), "OLd Man" (with ODB and RZA) and "silverbacks" (with INS and GZA)...as you can tell, it's kind of a clan album.

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 4 June 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

has it leaked yet?

i've always liked him, since Chessboxin,' but my hip hop buddies almost uniformly despise him

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 4 June 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't despise him, but I have a hard time believing this beats "Pretty Toney", which I've come to consider Ghostface's best. Really the only Wu-Tang people I get excited about these days are ODB and Ghost, and occasionally the RZA (a la Kill Bill)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 4 June 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah ive really been getting into the pretty toney album as well, although i dunno if id go so far as to call it his best...
what are some of masta killas verses from wu tracks?

robin (robin), Saturday, 5 June 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

best wu release in some time. a lot better than pretty tony.

stgwrt, Saturday, 5 June 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

did masta spend the last 3 years woodshedding or something? i always found him to be the unquestionably least charismatic and skilled member of the wu

Yo
Sometimes I'm liable to spaz and break fool
Grab my gun, select one, snatch son
Put the barrel by his face, blast one by his eardrum
Piss run, you drop thinkin you shot
Screamin like a bitch, kicks to your face
Shots to the body that shake like the bass
I'm Ghostfaced up, military style down
Nuff ammunitions of rounds across the chest

blargh

Yeah, sometimes I feel like his flow sucks, but sometimes he's got some good 'rhymes' (even though he doesn't actually *rhyme* as much as other Wu members). Check "Assassination Day" from the Ironman album, or "Wu-Gambinos" from Cuban Linx.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Sunday, 6 June 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Where'd you hear this anyway?

King Kobra (King Kobra), Sunday, 6 June 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I keep hearing this is better than GFK's latest which I find hard to believe, but now I'm actually excited. Plus my low expectations mean if this is even average I'll be happy with it.

djdee2005, Monday, 7 June 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I just heard it off S******K. It's definitely more early Wu sounding that Ghost's latest. I dig it (al). haha.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Monday, 7 June 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's fine alright. he turned up at Ghost's show at the Knitting Factory last Sunday night and pretty much stole the show. The way he enters track 2 (ie the first proper track) is worth the 10 bucks alone. Most record stores have this by now...

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

he stole the show from ghost?

King Kobra (King Kobra), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah this thread just gets more sputter inducing, but now i am excited about the album

jake in portland (cerybut), Thursday, 10 June 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not better than Ghost's, but its def. one of the best post SC Wu albums.

djdee2005, Thursday, 10 June 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

six years pass...

anybody else enjoy this? i've had it a few months and I really really like it. great use of samples, confident flow/delivery, but very relaxed .

San Te, Thursday, 5 August 2010 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah this album is great. best non-ghost wu solo since liquid swords

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

ha. that album's fun too.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 02:54 (fifteen years ago)

actually, i'd prob take Blackout! over either, but it's dismissed on a technicality

The Reverend, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

from what i remember this album seemed to have brief flashes of something much greater than what you'd expect from a masta killa record (i love love 'grab the microphone') but i never dug the whole thing front to back

"best non-ghost wu solo since liquid swords" doesn't really say much anyway, which is kind of depressing
