Technasia: S & D

So I read quite a few casually positive references to Technasia from the likes of Siegbran, Vahid and Tylero, and then I saw a Technasia live at Fuse mix for really cheap, and I picked up, and instead of asian techno or trance or whatever it turns out to be ruff chicago house! Is this typical of the group or a weird diversion? And what else should I check out?

definitely the Future Mix album, a collection of their singles and interludes that's loosely themed as a radio show.

it is not entirely typical, no. i was surprised too. there are two guys in technasia, charles siegling and amil khan. the fuse mix is by siegling. amil khan is a bit more classic techno in his tastes.

the older technasia material that ryan is talking about is like the zero-gravity forcetracks material (hakan lidbo and crane ak come to mind) with the pace and dynamics of the live at fuse mix.

basically fairly speedy techno but made of these clear ringing tones and floaty blobs of neon synths and crisp lively hi-hats. like ken ishii it's less about rhythmic innovation and more about the clean, shiny textures ... themes for bullet trains and all that.

the future mix album is definitely the place to start.

and it's funny because i've been listening to the "live at fuse" mix all day today. i think it's a great, great mix - i really love how he brings in "fly life" at like +8 or something.

Yeah the whole thing sounds great - like Cajual stuff on heavy doses of protein powder - but it's not what I was expecting.

haha themes for bullet trains is perfect
its all shimmery, glistening high pitched stuff
i saw charles siegling play at the dublin electronic arts festival, and although he was playing lots of detroit stuff,he made it sound like their type of techno, all treble rather than bass or something
i much prefer the murkier, harder end of techno but i still like a lot of what ive heard of technasia

I hear the Chicago Jack influence quite clearly in most of Technasia's material. Their stuff always strikes me as a pretty even balance of Detroit (the synths/textures, the hi-hat programming) and Chicago (The Jack, the 909, the shuffle/swing on the patterns) with a certain asian thematic and melodic influence. A pretty heavy duty french filter-funk element is there too (especially on their most recent stuff: nebula dance, fusin, etc) Also, the way they program the breakdowns/fills of a lot of their songs sounds like old-school tape splicing/dj doubles tricks - detroit/chicago hotmix dj style. There really isn't anything of theirs that I don't really really like, so I gues I'm not very objective here. Also, Charles played the best DJ set I've ever heard last time I was in NYC at Tronic Treatment to a very enthusiastic crowd. All kinds of techno from detroit - tribal - filter funk - booty bass/ghetto tech mixed clean as hell and quickly on 3 decks. He's definately one of my faves.

one year passes...
New material imminent. They released the first (well second, really, if you count 'that steppin show') single off the upcoming 'Popsoda' album. It's called '2 the Floor' and it's got dj nasty and fletch flex on it and IT FUCKING KILLS THE WHOLE WORLD IT IS THE JAM HELLLLLLLLLL YEAAAAAAAAAH. haha

I love these guys.

three weeks pass...
Just listening to these guys as they're going to be playing on the same night as Luciano. Especially like the '2 the floor' track, like loopy techno mixed well with old school riffy rave. Nice.
