Love the ethos/love the music - Kinks, Prince, Buzzcocks/Magazine, Minutemen, PM Dawn.

I'm only about the love today.

dan, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Like James, I have a hard time separating the two. Hell, I like the early Skrewdriver stuff, but that's before their ethos became quite objectionable (and the music became shitty). The early Burzum stuff is obviously associated with a pretty questionable ethos, but it's so good that I don't hear them selling anything other than a kind of generalized despair and frustration. It doesn't make me want to burn down a church. Good music has to sell an ethos, among other things.

Love the music/love the ethos: Grateful Dead - "Uncle John's Band"
Hate the music/hate the ethos: Grateful Dead - "St. Stephen"

See what I mean?

Kris, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

maria you intrigue me a little more every day.

love the ethos/love the music: the beta band, the boredoms.

hate the ethos/love the music: dancehall, gangsta/street/hardcore hiphop, uk garage

love the ethos/hate the music: a good deal of free jazz, noise, and otherwise atonal cauterwalling.

hate the ethos/hate the music: new age. pop-country. a LOT of idm.

jess, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maria is awesome, however hating the atmosphere of the Velvets is something I can't agree with. The atmosphere surrounding that band is one of my all-time faves.

Are Phillistines, Jr. still a recording act? I used to hang out sometimes with a couple of those guys, as well as the Dave and Paul they wrote a song about. I had a pretty big crush on Dave; hope he doesn't read this.

Sean, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's not that I hate the atmosphere, really. I put those two bands under that category because they are the ones I do not like to admit I enjoy because of all the expectations and stereotypes that have been built up around them. I feel pretentious and like a pathetic suburbanite wanting to be hip or something if I say I like the Velvets.

(Sean...I think the Philistines Jr are still about, it took them about 5 years to record their last album and 3 years to get it released (this year), they play in loads of other bands as well.)

james, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For me, image and ethos aren't that far removed, so the older thread Love the Music / Loathe the image comes to mind.

But yeah, I don't listen really listen to artists whose ethos I don't like. I bet Ned does a lot.

Nick, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This has really got me thinking now. There are loads of acts that would fit into Robin's love music/hate ethos category for me. Loads of hip hop for example. But I don't have a problem with them. And it's not even as if I have to shut out the lyrics either - I can appreciate their quality without feeling like I have to buy into their outlook.

Someone on another thread (maybe on ILE) suggested, when the whole "why do so many people with an indie background use 'indie' like a dirty word" thing came up again that it's because people are much more critical of things that are, in objective/general public's terms, close to what they like but somehow completely wrong than they are of things from a more alien genre. And that's what's going on here with me I think. Pulp, The Smiths, Belle & Sebastian, The Cure, The Divine Comedy, Blur. All those bands do things other people might class together. Yet I love the first three and loathe the others, because of what you might call their ethos. They and I are coming from a similar enough (though it pains me to say it) place that it's important for me to distinguish violently between them in order to define exactly what I'm about. No one who's met me is going to see an Eminem record in my collection and think that I'm a misogynist fuck-up with violent fantasies. But if they see 'Parklife' or 'Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me' there, I feel like I'm being associated with things I think are really lame. If it's someone plugged into indie music then I hope that my discernment explains what I'm about. And if it's someone who isn't, then I guess I want to make the point that what they think of as indie music doesn't really feel like a cohesive genre to me at all - you know, the kind of "Oh you're indie, so you'll like Coldplay" attitude. Of course, for the most part, these people I'm talking about aren't actually real, or at least they're not looking at my music collection and giving a toss about what the lack of Cure records says about me or indie music. They're people I invoke in my interior discourse with myself. But yeah - when it comes to music that's 'close to home' I'm pretty fucking ideological and don't make a habit of making exceptions on 'musical' grounds when I think the ethos stinks.

Nick, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And here's a new one I've just invented:

no ethos/indifferent to music: Jay-Z, Tindersticks, Stereolab, David Gray, Strokes, Andrew WK, Jimmy Eat Bran Flakes or whatever the hell they're called, Jools Holland and his Boogie Woogie Sopranino Bullroarer Magic, Teenage Fanclub, Travis, Floyd post-'79, all Spice Girl solo efforts bar Mel B "I Want You Back," Diana Krall, Mel Torme, Handsome Family, Gracie Fields, Andrew Poppy.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

love the ethos / hate the music: Throbbing Gristle, SPK, Matmos, Bjork, MoM, Public Enemy, D'Angelo, GWAR, Wilco
hate the ethos / love the music: NIN, Tool, Jay-Z, NWA, Dre Godspeed YBE!, Prml Scrm, Ryan Adams
hate the ethos / hate the music: Bizkit, Creed, Christina, Ben Folds, Eminem
love the ethos / love the music: idm wankery, Bright Eyes, Outkast, Basement Jaxx, Fugazi, RIchard Buckner, Ryan Adams

bnw, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I sorta find this question a bit weird, I think. I tend to treat whatever ethos comes up as a separate thing, and even then I don't really bother with considering/thinking about it too much...

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Someone here hates Public Enemy! Where were you on the C or D?

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick, your last post there was utterly classic. Hadn't thought of it that way, but you're spot on - I dislike both the ethos and the music of Coldplay or Starsailor because they make me doubt my love of bands whose ethos and music are quite similar but somehow incomparably superior.

Tim, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

re: Public Enemy - Lots of their songs fall really flat for me. Always seemed the excitement surrounding them was more interesting then their albums. I don't how specific I can be other then I don't think their production aged very well. But maybe it isn't fair to seperate the message from the music, especially in their case.

/me back-peddles

yeah, i probably shouldn't have thrown t-pain in there, or at least should have clarified that in my head i was thinking of his pre- "buy u a drank" output, especially because i love the ethos in the chorus to the plies song.

Jordan Sargent, Sunday, 1 July 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)
