TS: Colin Hay (Men at Work) vs. Tony Lewis (The Outfield) vs. Sting (The Police)

I don't even know how to describe what it is about their voices that's similar, but you've heard them all and you know what I mean.

I dismiss Sting altogether because of...well, because he's Sting. So the contest is really between Lewis and Hay.

You originally mentioned Sting. No person who can legitimately consider themselves as a "music lover" can dismiss Sting. So, therefore, there is no contest....Sting

and, as hard as you may try to deny it, the mighty pop star/rocker/reggae ripoff artist Sting reins supreme over any of the posers that you currently waste time listening to.

Tony Lewis is in no way comparable to Hay and Sting (themselves quite disparate as songwriters).

I'd sooner pit the Outfield against....fuck, I don't know...Level 42 (although they have some serious jazz chops, i'm told). Fuck the Outfield.

I've never heard of Tony Lewis but the similarity between Hay and Sting came up on another thread somewhere, and someone suggested that the thing they had in common was a touch of the faux-reggae/Jamaican accent.

There's a solo acoustic version of Hay doing "Overkill" that's pretty damn amazing.

Tony Lewis? Not the portly ex-Glamorgan and England cricketer and the BBC host of their cricket coverage prior to 1999? ;)

Colin Hay... hmmm, there's a track by him on Paul McCartney's compiled Uncut CD this month; not too bad an acoustic-type affair. Though not really Roddy Frame, who does wistful acoustica better than virtually anyone else.

only one of these fine gentlemen wrote the following lyrics:

Josie's on a vacation far away
Come around and talk it over
So many things that I wanna say
You know I like my girls a little bit older
I just wanna use you love tonight
I don't wanna lose your love tonight

I ain't got many friends to talk to
Nowhere to run when I'm in trouble
You know I'd do anything for you
Stay the night but keep it undercover
I just wanna use you love tonight
I don't wanna lose your love tonight

Try to stop my hands from shaking,
But something in my mind's not making sense
It's been a while since we were all alone,
But I can't hide the way I'm feeling

As you're leaving please would you close the door,
And don't forget what I told ya
Just because you're right that don't make me wrong
Another shoulder to cry upon
I just wanna use you love tonight
I don't wanna lose your love tonight
Use your love
Lose your love
Your love

The Outfield sold next to zilch albums in the UK, in the US their brand of corporate rawk made them multi million selling kings of rock radio/ MTV

u just refuse to acknowledge the brilliance that is "yer love." you brit sourpuss.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 6 June 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the US equivalent of Outfield were probably Mr Mister, and Canadian equivalent Glass Tiger.

Another Brit band that a slick fake-mid atlantic sound Cutting Crew: (I Just) Died in Your Arms

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 6 June 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Outfield seemed much more concerned with making their names in the US than at home, what with all the baseball terminology ("The Outfield," the album Play Deep). In fact, I always assumed they were an American band until I read a bio a few years ago.

"Your Love" is still a staple on US '80s rock radio and is on the setlist of almost every cover band on the bar circuit.

I hate the name Josie.

one year passes...
If you don't like The Outfield that's cool,I can respect that. What I won't respect is anyone putting them down. So,to those of you who feel justified in doing so,my response is,CAN IT LOSERS!

HAHA

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 28 May 2006 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

Without Sting, the two others wouldn't have existed (or, at least, wouldn't have sounded the same way)

So it will have to be Sting, even though I dig those Men At Work albums from 82-83.

Actually, the Outfield guy sings way more like Jules Shear, in Jules and the Polar Bears days.
