songwriters who have written many very remarkable songs

this is not merely a question of ordinary sublimity. i move tha wil oldham has left us with new partner, ohio river boat song, i see a darkness, raining in darling and agnes queen of sorrow, and that there is no-one in competition with this.
the beatles wrote mnay fine things but nothing, to my recollection, that reached that pitch of catharis. joy division had transmission and love will rear us apart, which is good given the years they had to work in. dylan had like a rolling stone and and blowin, and mothers will have managed at least two but my recollection is ravaged by drink.

nominate the competition, you old sods.

matthew james (matthew james), Saturday, 5 June 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

apologies for my incredible spelling.

matthew james (matthew james), Saturday, 5 June 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

dylan had much more than like a rolling stone. dylan had blonde on blonde. and so much more.

but i agree, i cant think of a more amazing songwriter at the moment than oldham.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Saturday, 5 June 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

blonde on blonde is good, but is that question of reaching that very rare pitch whih i think dylan has done less.

matthew james (matthew james), Saturday, 5 June 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Way to move it outside the "indie" realm, roger.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 6 June 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Songwriting and indie go hand in hand because they are both worthless

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 6 June 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc - I SAID i'd play ball. And only because the two 'indie rockersTM' on my list are pretty fucking brilliant as far as I'm concerned and to ignore them would be as absurd as, say, I dunno, claiming that Will Oldham and Bill Callahan are 'amazing songwriters'

Nothing against them, I like both, but the hit and miss ratio is SO Drag City, no?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 6 June 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

without wanting to state the blindingly obvious saying that Bill Callaghan is hit and miss then listing M ward is a bit pointless. all songwriters are hit and miss and the best ones especially are. I'll take a bill Callaghan miss over most things though.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 6 June 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

For such a Bill Callahan superfan, you seem to problems spelling his name.

Unless it's this guy you're talking about.

i don't quite understand this question, but as for people who might just maybe possibly provide competition for will o in the cathartic songwriting competition, i humbly offer

hank williams
ray davies
goffin and king
prince
joni mitchell
pj harvey

i'm thinking there are maybe possibly 1 or 2 or 378 others, but i'm too tired to summon their names right now.
