did anyone do a diary this year? Dustedmagazine had one last year (as did I), but neither of us seems to have gone this year.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 6 June 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

And what's with the streaming being screwed up this year?
Not to mention that it usually takes them a couple of months to get the archives online ...

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 6 June 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

just keeping this current for all of those returning to computers today...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got home and sort of in a daze. The Plastikman show was incredible, though there were problems with the video, so half of the songs were without visuals - but what did come thru was amazing. Saturday, Isolee was fantastic, but omg Donna Summer was so fucking awful. I thought he was kinda funny, this fat balding white guy jumping around stage like a rockstar clown, but the novely wore off really fast and the crowd booed him at the end. I thought Krikor was boring, and I didn't like Crackhaus either. It sounded too, um, tribal for me. Herbert went on at around 5am, opened with Radiohead "Everything in its Right Place" - had lot of fun. Left the club at like 7 totally cracked out, and I feel really bad for the cleaning ladies at the Quality Inn where all the mutek kids were staying. The highlight for me was the picnic on sunday afternoon. Magda and Troy from Run Stop Restore DJ'ed, though he didn't play his remix of Grauzone "Eisbaer" that he promised to. Jeff Samuel DJ'ed too, and Akufen (so cute) was there with his kids.

I had some bad poutine too. Oh my head hurts, but tonite is Matthew Dear at Joe's Pub in NYC, and its his vocal debut too.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

cracked out?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

you know. like 7am, drunk, high, exhausted, sweaty, etc.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, you smoked crack. Just admit it.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

no! ugh, but i threw up in richie h@wtin's bathroom, and i think i missed the toilet.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

you're totally off your mash on crack pipes.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you go to all the events, or just the evening ones, or ...?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

...stay up all night freebasing?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't go to the daytime ones. oh except for the sunday afternoon picnic. i was on my way to see my friend rob in thinkbox, but then I got hit by a car and went to the hospital instead. not too serious though.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't anyone else go??

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even like techno that much, and i went anyway

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I went the last three years, $$$ and work kept me from going this time. :(

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to go with a whole crew of friends of Seattle and Vancouver but it never got off the ground. I got in touch with the Vancouver crew last week, we talked about it, and agreed that while Mutek is great, Mutek is best enjoyed with a group of friends, and not alone. And it just turns out my friends all just couldn't make it this time around. Also, it turns out the line up wasn't really all that for me, personally. (Nothing against a DJ set by Herbert, but I've seen the man live, and it probably would not be the same)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i went, it was excellent as usual. i'm completely exhausted right now, but here are my faves: isolee (words cannot describe how good he was - his set was wayyy to short), jamie lidell (if you have not seen this man's live show, you must. he even covered "forever in my life" by prince), angel (schneider tm and ilpo vaisanen - cathartic), ilpo v. solo, byetone (the raster noton night was great, but byetone stole the show), the mole doing a stunner of a theo parrish style set with laptop and 1200s - completely bumping, herbert (although i only heard about a half hour and stumbled out to a cab), the afternoon set of the local artists/djs was wicked bumpy cutup goodness, i missed most the burnt freidman & jaki liebezeit show but what i caught was stellar, portable, andrew weatherall's set was kicking and too short...i'm probably forgetting something, maybe i will post more later..

tricky disco, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Nobody's mentioned Pure yet ... the experimental stuff was more of a drawing card for me this year since I'd already seen several of the artists playing the Metropolis nights at previous MUTEK's.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

any other Plastikman reports?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Best show during Mutek was Sun City Girls up the street at Sala Rossa, friday and saturday nights!

superultramega (superultramarinated), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

clever

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i have mixed feelings about the plastikman show. i don't think it was the right venue for what he was trying to pull off and i found the show itself to be a bit too tightly controlled, but then again i think one of the keys themes of the show is control so in that regard it was successful - just not my cup of tea. the visuals were perfect and very innovative and it was by far the most attended show that i recall. i think he did an admirable job of mixing mind and body. it left a lasting impression if anything...

i missed pure/dekam because i wanted to catch the junior boys.

tricky disco, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i missed the junior boys to see tangiers and the von bondies. i think i made a big mistake.

tricky disco, did you go to the after-hours on friday nite after plastikman?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

the one with magda? no...we went and terrorized bus riders on st. laurent.

tricky disco, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

oh you missed it. lots of glow sticks and sweaty shirtless men giving massages. and then i think magda's final scratch broke so she ended up having to play a bunch of random promo records that people gave her that day.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, doesn't sound like i missed much actually! the one thing at mutek that i'm bummed i missed was the jeff samuel set.

tricky disco, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

oh no, the picnic was my favorite day of mutek! if you live in nyc, jeff samuel is playing at the ghostly/spectral night at APT on 6/15

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm in chicago, but thanks for the info. i knew that picnic was going to be good, but there are only so many events that one can attend. montreal is a great city and i like to spend time just wandering around while i'm there. so that's what i did that afternoon/evening...

tricky disco, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Samuel will also play The Phoenix Landing in <The People's Republic of> Cambridge (that city north of Boston, MA) on Wednesday, June 16.

Sadly I have a client meeting in DC the next morning and will have to read all about it...elsewhere...somewhere...here?

nader (nader), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
is anyone going to mutek mexico? i was going to be in chicago, then to mexico so i was gonna be there anyway. april 13-17. matt dear, isolee, krikor, monolake.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

is it in mexico city? i would presume that it would have to be.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I woould love to go. But I can't.

just adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i think its in mexico city. ciudad de mexico?
info: http://www.strobe.com.mx/mutek/

but annie (from norway) is playing those same days back home in nyc :(

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

is annie actually confirmed for NYC? i heard the rumor but nothing more.

rajeev (rajeev), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah pretty much. vice is putting out the record and is bring her out, i think apr 15 performance somewhere. the venue is TBC. but also m1sshapes is having her dj there on saturday.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

excellent, that should be a lot of fun. the 15th, that is. not a fan of misshapes, but i'll be at sonic youth anyways...

rajeev (rajeev), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i didnt see you at lit that nite when sammy dee and plexus were playing. though i got there at around 2 and pretty drunk already. it wasnt that crowded but i was stumbling around going "rajeev? rajeev? u here?", but if you were actually there and were embarassed and didn't want to be associated with me, i totally understand.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, now i wish i had gone! i probably would've watched from a distance for a few minutes before introducing myself. i was probably in bed by then. i'm sure i would have checked it out if i hadn't just seen them both at tonic. (and lit is such a strange place for them to spin at.)

rajeev (rajeev), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah probably. it'll be the last time he comes for awhile since he comes here so often because his gf lives here, but shes moving to berlin in may.

and anyhow, downstairs at lit + smoke = downstairs at tonic. so not that weird of space to spin at.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, true. i guess i'm just not used to DJ events at lit, especially with a DJ like sammy dee.

daniel bell at tonic this week!

rajeev (rajeev), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)
