...and after "Nocturama" my hopes are not so high. Apparently it's out in September. I just hope they took more than a week this time around. Any thoughts?

Simon H., Monday, 7 June 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick Cave is tumbling over into ghastly pretentiousness shockah!

maybe it will be good though.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

of course I meant "in" not "is".

I wonder if this was meant to be two distinct albums (wasn't he going to do three albums in quick succession)? I'm guessing one is agressive and the other isn't (just going by the titles); this reminds me of Tom Waits' last two.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Beyond the title, I don't see how Nocturama is pretentious at all. It's just bad. Despite that, I'm still excited about any forthcoming release(s).

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick Cave has been pretentious since the Boys Next Door, let's be honest.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Catchy title.

lovebug starski, Monday, 7 June 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Preacherboxxx/The Hell Below

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Blixa quits and all HELL breaks loose!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The last two both had many songs to recommend them, but i agree, there's been a lapse in quality since The Boatman's Call

Luckily, he's still one of the best live performers you'll ever see, regardless of what album he happens to be supporting

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Blixa quits and all HELL breaks loose!

Haha! I'm imagining this sung Misfits-style.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

how is "nocturama" a pretentious title? it's a joke, and kinda a good one

tom west (thomp), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

hah abba-toir blues = a v bad pun and i hope just a typo

tom west (thomp), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The last two both had many songs to recommend them, but i agree, there's been a lapse in quality since The Boatman's Call

Which itself was an unprecedented drop in quality

*runs, hides*

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

to be honest, as time goes on, i find myself liking nick cave's solo stuff less and less on the whole.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick Cave also doesn't seem to like it; he says he never listens to his own records, which isn't a good sign, I feel. 'You listen to them so I don't have to.'

Momus (Momus), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian sorta otm. I rarely run home to put on Nick Cave records. Used to be obsessed with him in college though.

John, I've defended Boatman's Call here many times, so I won't go into it again. I will say though that unlike other albums I fervently defend here, I can definitely see where the hate for this album comes from.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

As oppsoed to, say, Thank You or Trompe le Monde

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

people obviously hate the boatman's call because it was the first real proof that Cave is TURNING INTO AN OLD FART.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

You got me, Tom. Not even the title is pretentious.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Monday, 7 June 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian- he was quite old by the time he made it.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 7 June 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

too bad he is off the smack

kephm, Monday, 7 June 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, why didn't the fucker die for his art?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 7 June 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

either this guy knows his press really well, or the title indicates a sad dive into unintentional self-parody.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 7 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

If Nocturama is anything to go by, I'm guessing the latter.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
Anybody heard these yet? I somehow found the first track and it's just making me even more eager to hear the rest. As far as that track goes: it's fast and interesting and full of God but hard to absorb out of context.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

the title still gives me giggles.

/\|\/|/\ (amateurist), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I admit to liking my own title joke in response.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

And I'd probably be even more eager to hear that album, Ned.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hey Ya SINNERS!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

So are you saying it's meant to be a companion to Speakerboxx/The Love Below, Ned?

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

leaked yet? what's the name of the song you heard, Chollie?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

If only Nick would put Paula Abdul in his videos, maybe then he could once again earn my respect.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I surprised myself by not getting Nocturama. But then realised in retrospect it was because No More Shall We Part had too many songs and hit the mark 50% of the time, if that.

But agree with Roger that live he owns regardless. I mean just to see "The Carny" a current tour would be worth it again.

The new double? Hopefully, it'll be good. No Kylie though, bummer ;)

piers (piers), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"Get Ready For Love". It's the first track on Abattoir Blues. Somebody on Soulseek has it and was on just long enough for me to grab that track.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

So are you saying it's meant to be a companion to Speakerboxx/The Love Below, Ned?

More like I suspect it'll cause the same reaction among most of the fanbase, IE, "ARGH GET OFF THIS PARTICULAR TRACK YOU'RE ON THESE DAYS."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i keep thinking of the simpsons episiode where homer decides to boost his vocabulary and one of the words he learns is "abbatoir."

/\|\/|/\ (amateurist), Monday, 16 August 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

ned's joke is very funny

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 16 August 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, blame it all on the exit (or firing, actually) of Blixa. Blixa, meanwhile, is doing such inspiring art as the last Neubauten album and those unspeakably awful TV commercials on Viva ("Yippee! Yi-yi! Ja!"). How much do you think Blixa misses that Bad Seeds pay check?

Addie, Monday, 16 August 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Blixa was axed? Why?

The Velvet Overlord (The Velvet Overlord), Monday, 16 August 2004 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
wow, i think this record (the second one - Lyre of Orpheus) is great - probably my favorite of his in a while. I didn't like the last two very much (though both had momnets - gooooood moments) but this one is really different. Seems like he's going for a latter-day Lenny Cohen thing, kinda giving in to the backup singer impulses - to good effect, though. "Breathless" is the poppiest thing he's done in a while, but "Easy Money" and "Supernaturally" are completely totally fall of the chair great

don't call it a comeback!

downloading Abbatoir Blues now...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 30 August 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, so the last two songs are kinda weak. Kinda VERY weak, in a "Living Years" kinda way.

Will this be yet another example of a double album that could have easily been a single?

Why DID he break them up, anyway? Are they being sold separately?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 30 August 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i was wondering why nick was on letterman last week. solo with piano, doing mercy seat. it was ok

kephm (kephm), Monday, 30 August 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

weird choice.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 30 August 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't like the last two very much (though both had momnets - gooooood moments) but this one is really different.

That's a good sign, since his last two sounded incredibly weak to me.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 30 August 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

This one is full of stuff that would be amazing in live performance. Especially the Abbatoir Blues half.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 2 September 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

BUMP! Anybody else anticipating this? Track listings are up - S*L*S*K has a few (so I've heard) and I'm about to drop $20.00 on this sucker. What's the good word, hummingbirds?

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Anybody know shit in this fuckhole?

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Based on the last two albums I'm not buying it until I hear some songs on slsk to see if they're any better than that.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Seconded.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard half of it from my girlfriend. Pretty good actually, and different...more uptempo and major-key songs than I've ever heard from him. Also, he's finally "matured" as an artist, i.e. he has gospel choirds.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

er, choirs

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh-oh. I sense creeping Spz.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned fears Spiritualized syndrome.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

I do think Nick Cave is far past the point being able to pass off his Jesus-y lyrics as ironic or sarcastic.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard half of Abattoir Blues so far... it is much better than Nocturama, not that this is hard. I think I quite like it.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, so are we in for another 'No More Shall We Part'....?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

CANNIBAL’S HYMN

You have a heart and I have a key
Lie back and let me unlock you
Those heathens you hang with down by the sea
All they want to do is defrock you
I know a river, where we can dream
It will swell up, burst it’s banks, babe, and rock you
But if you’re gonna dine with them cannibals
Sooner or later, darling, you’re gonna get eaten
But I’m glad you’ve come around here with your animals
And your heart that is bruised but unbeaten
And beating like a drum

I will sit like a bird on a fence
Sing you songs with a happy ending
Swoop down and tell you that it don’t make sense
To attack the very thing you’re defending
Didn’t I just buy that dress for you?
That pink paper pinafore that you keep mending
Well, if you’re gonna dine with the cannibals
Sooner or later, darling, you’re gonna get eaten
But I’m glad you’ve come around here with your animals
And your heart that is banging and beating
And banging like a gong

I can see that they’ve hurt you, dear
Here is some moonlight to cloak us
And I will never desert you here
Unpetaled among the crocus
Allow me, my love, to allay your fear
As I swim, in and out of focus
But if you’re gonna dine with the cannibals
Sooner or later, darling, you’re gonna get eaten
But I’m glad you’ve come around here with your animals
And your heart that is bruised but bleating
And bleeding like a lamb
Banging like a gong
Beating like a drum

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
so is this any good?, its been out at least a week here in NZ.. havent convinced myself to pick it up yet, after the disaster that was nocturama

chris andrews (fraew), Sunday, 26 September 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, Nocturama wasn't a disaster as such. It has some good tracks. Anyway, yes this is much better Nocturama. I like it very much.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 26 September 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I overheard some of it in the store recently and it was quite good...and the clerks--who had heard the whole thing--said it's quite an improvement over the last few. I'm looking forward to it.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 26 September 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds like they've adjusted to losing blixa; maybe nocturama was as bad as it was because they were overcompensating or trying to prove themselves.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 26 September 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
It's weird, but I still really like this album. Weird, but true.

The Boy Who Cried YSI? (Freud Junior), Thursday, 8 June 2006 23:43 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe this didn't become THE abbatoir thread...

The Boy Who Cried YSI? (Freud Junior), Thursday, 8 June 2006 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

or maybe it did, such little discussion.

The Boy Who Cried YSI? (Freud Junior), Thursday, 8 June 2006 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

i'm not sure if there's another thread either, but holy hell, i love this album. both discs, especially abattoir. i still listen to it all the time. it's right up there with murder ballads and let love in and tender prey as my favorite things he's ever done.

Emily B (Emily B), Friday, 9 June 2006 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

I've heard half of Abattoir Blues so far... it is much better than Nocturama, not that this is hard. I think I quite like it.

-- The Lex (alex_macpherso...), September 8th, 2004.

Hey wait, this isn't r'n'b! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 June 2006 01:35 (nineteen years ago)

cool!
