a sad Mountain Goats tale from Craig's List

I was reading through the fun "missed connections" section, i.e. "hey hottie from Hollywood, I was the dude in the BMW, you were hott, email me thx"

JOhn should send this person a CD! =(

anon-32692063@craigslist.org

I wish I would have left my computer on the front seat so you could be reading this, however I'll just have to hope you stumble upon it in some internet cafe in your travels.
So tell me, what was it about my dirty, trashed, beat up 95 Ford Escort that you couldn't resist? What could have driven you to break my passenger side window and root around through all the trash just to get to 1) my broken car stereo - enjoy 2) The DVD I was planning on returning to the Columbia House DVD club - it was Something's Got to Give and I hope you enjoy it or can sell it for 5 bucks 3) the box of clothes and cds that you didn't even bother to take. Is my taste in music that bad?
Why did you overlook the silver hip flask in my glove compartment? You had to have seen it since you left it on the seat.
Why didn't you take the pill bottle full of Adderall that I leave in my car since I take it daily? Don't you know that it's amphetemine salts and you can sell them for about five bucks apiece. Probably for the same reason that you didn't take the Demerol bottle that was next to it. You most likely can't read. Which explains why you didn't take my books and this weeks issue of The Economist. So, for not taking the things I care about - I thank you.
P.S. Enjoy the Mountain Goats cd you did take - I'm just sorry that you'll be getting into them too late - they just played Spaceland. But they'll be back soon enough. Hope you can steal some more stuff by then to afford the ticket.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

this thief has good taste at least.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I got this guy's back Gear, thanks for the heads-up

however if he does not provide me with Demerol I shall be quite miffed

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

One time someone broke into my friends car, stole his stereo, SORTED THROUGH HIS CDS AND PICKED OUT ALL THE MAINSTREAM HIP HOP AND LEFT LIKE BUTTHOLE SURFERS, LIGHTNING BOLT, JUNO REACTOR AND MUDHONEY CDS OR SOMETHING!!!@!!@@!@!

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

once i lost a cd book full of can cd's, it was horrible

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't have a CD player for years, always just bought vinyl then I bought one and bought my first CD (which I believe was "Die Nacht der Seele" by Popol Vuh). Cut a short story even shorter, two days later my flat was broken into and the CD player complete with my only CD, which was in it at the time, was stolen. *Shakes fist impotently at God*

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I should write to Bill Callahan and tell him I can't find my copy of Supper and could he please send me another one ok thanx bye.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

NA don't make me paranoid k thx bye

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

At the risk of turning this into a stolen goods thread: my car was broken into a few Christmases back, and the only discs stolen were Pere Ubu's "Tenement Year" and Zappa's "Civilization Phaze III." Must've been a Music Mafia wise-guy job.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

let me know how it turns out, JD, because I could use some Demerol as well. (a kind gesture sir)

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Even JUNO REACTOR??? O WHAT WAS HE THINKING!!!

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

kinda reminds me of the time when my car stereo was stolen. i'm sure when the thieves ejected the disc and (if they) played it, they were like, 'WTF is this?' it was Godspeed!YBE's first EP.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

NA, coulda hooked you up last summer, too late now.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I lent my interpol cd to a girlfriend only to break up a week later...Dear Interpol, PLEASE DON'T send me a replacement copy.

kthx

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

also to the Flaming Lips: my roommate borrowed my EP, the one with the "Do You Realize?" remix by the Postal Service. She can keep it as far as I'm concerned, and no replacement thx

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the Supper cd might be in the wrong case, as Sarah tends to just put things in whatever case is available when she's in the car. I keep meaning to go through all my cds, opening them one by one, until I find it but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Bill Callahan, this is my sad tale.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

You think you know, but you have no idea.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I sympathize, brah.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread's a gem. thx Gear!

tru, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

You are welcome, stranger!

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

My car was broken into once, but no music was taken. They did take my bag, though, which had in it: weed, a pipe, college applications, my arab on radar pin.

fuckers.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i had about 40 or 50 cds stolen out of my car 3 or 4 years ago. devastating. I still have a lot of the cases around here somewhere.

oh and they stole my sweatshirt which took years to get worn in. damn kids.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

A boy from my high school once broke into my house and stole:

1 homemade silk-screened Siouxsie & the Banshees poster off my wall
1 vintage University of Wisconsin at Madison sweatshirt of my father's
1 can of air for cleaning photographic slides
about 20 pirate cassette tapes from Thailand, including Stranglers, XTC, Lou Reed, The Pretenders and The Style Council.

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven months pass...
Did John actually contact this dude, then?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

i'm dying to know, too. i haven't slept in nearly a year, just waiting to find out if it's been resolved.

J/K Jaymc ;)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

You guys do realize that the original poster is the narrative voice of the new tMG album right?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah? had no idea.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

i've said too much.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

I lost my car stereo a couple years ago with a copy of the Black Keys' Thickfreakness inside -- though the thief neglected to take The Big Come Up and Rubber Factory, as well as the Thickfreakness digipak case, which were all right below the CD player :D

stephen, Friday, 6 July 2007 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

wheres that thread where someone tells the story of the thief taking his entire (500+) collection EXCEPT for scott walker's 'tilt'

uptown churl, Saturday, 7 July 2007 01:24 (seventeen years ago)

Some really random shit missing the one time my 1000 CD collection was apparently rifled through:

Stephen Malkmus s/t
Smiths "Strangeways"
Public Enemy "It Takes a Nation"
Dr. Octagon "Dr. Octagonecologyst"
Louis Armstrong "Best of Hot Fives and Sevens"
John Coltrane "A Love Supreme" deluxe edition
Pixies "Surfer Rosa"
Steve Earle "Copperhead Road"

marmotwolof, Saturday, 7 July 2007 01:40 (seventeen years ago)

When my car stereo was stolen, the thieves thoughtfully ejected the Nuclear Blast metal sampler CD that was inside. Thanks guys!

Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 7 July 2007 01:43 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

The ad sounds less like "I'm upset someone rifled through my things" and more like "I feel violated, so I will try to boost my self esteem by bragging to the internet about my urbane taste in music and my sexy 'troubled' existence on prescription drugs and the hard liquor that I sup from my hip flask. And by the way, I read The Economist."

This guy needed some tough love, not a CD, J0hn!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

I'd probably still hang out with a dude like that, though.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 16:17 (sixteen years ago)

This revive sounds less like "I have a valid reason for reviving this thread" and more like "I have a snarky observation about something from 4 years ago that I urgently need to share with you all etc etc oh fuck it

some dude, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah. I'm projecting :(

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

Letter in Viz a few years ago, which against my better judgement I like to think wasn't made up, about someone having their house broken into and the whole CD collection being nicked except 'There Is Nothing Left To Lose' by the Foo Fighters

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 16:20 (sixteen years ago)

because they had it already, naturally

some dude, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

There's some irony in that being the only CD you have left to lose.

Finefinemusic, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 16:36 (sixteen years ago)

It would be funnier if they just left this:

http://derek.broox.com/images/albums/steal-this-album.jpg

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

I still want to know if J0hn got in touch with him :(

Savannah Smiles, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 17:08 (sixteen years ago)

Dada *shaking fist impotently at God* four years ago moved me nearly to tears now that I read about it.

t**t, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

I feel like breaking into folks' cars and leaving CDs I don't like.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B00028HO7W?showViewpoints=1

I am buying this CD because, like the reviewer from Corona, CA, someone broke into my car and stole only this CD! Who are these bi-coastal Ayala-CD banditos?

dad a, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 19:12 (sixteen years ago)

I feel like breaking into folks' cars and leaving CDs I don't like.

made me think of That Obscure Object Of Desire i've seen on tv yesterday... TOTAL SUBVERSION1
