Taking Sides: Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland vs. Mille Plateaux's Electric Ladyland

Jimi advantages: most expansive work of rock's greatest sonic fantasist; lengthy, all-over-the-place effort that remains remarkably cohesive; endless tons o' goodies tunewise, guitarwise, groovewise ("Crosstown Traffic"!); inspired generations of musicians in every category and will likely continue to do so for more to come; a "classic rock" album that sounds as exciting and new as it did when it came out.

MP advantages: longer (seven volumes, plus the new Clickhop Version 1.0); interesting concept (experimental takes on hip-hop and its breakbeat-y offshoots) done a fair amount of justice; showcase for some of the most interesting producers of the last few years rather than that megalomaniac Jimi; fine cover art.

Let's 'ave 'em....

Tough -- I'd give the edge to Jimi. (I'd give the Edge to the bottom of the lake.)

Are the early discs in the MP series still in print? I had a couple of them but had to get rid of them to pay off some parking tickets.

I have MP's EL#6, and I like it more than Hendrix. There is a track by Panacea on there that is just unbelievably scary. So gotta go w/ the MP.

Mark: the Panacea track on disc 1 or 2? I find "Bulletproof" a bit more threatening than "The New Style", though not as obviously fucked- up. He's not a scary man though - just very funny. Have you seen/heard the Hanayo collab? The modern equivalent of Stalling/Jones/Esquivel for mirthful sonic material... 'jam' to their Goons, or summat.

In answer to question - MP, no contest. There's just more of it, for a start.

While I don't know Mille Plateaux's Ladyland at all, I'm gonna side with it just because Hendrix is a bit wanky re: his Ladyland (if I remember correctly). (Still suffering from Classic Rock Whiplash, I'm afraid.)

And I thought "Crosstown Traffic" was on his 1st LP...?

Oh, fudge. I repeat myself, AND I'm wrong about "Crosstown Traffic". I'll go listen to "Tangerine" ad nauseum as punishment.
