"I kind of like X, but I can't stand that one chick" S/P?

(S/P = Smack or Punch)

Two people (who don't even know each other) have said that to me. X without Exene. "I would like X, if only they sounded like someone else."

No patience for comments like that ...

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this similar to "I would like the Doors, if only Morrison wasn't singing?"

Also, classic.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like the Beatles more if it wasn't for those four moptopped ponces

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

So you like George Martin then.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

That Doors comment makes sense to me, Alex.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Except that I wouldn't like the Doors, even without Jim Morrison.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

c'mon, some of the music's pretty good when it's not smothered by Jim's ego.

"I would like X better if Ray Manzarek hadn't been involved." - C/D

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ray Manzarek was in X?

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

You might want to check some production credits there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

How long d'you think it took for them to get sick of him bitching about Morrison?

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually saw John Doe the other night. He did a couple of X songs and all I could think was "thank god Exene was in that band." I love them to death, but his voice on it's own does far less than half the job.

danh (danh), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like X if they didn't do that off-harmony thing (and made the lyrics easier to hear). Both of them sound fine separately and when they're not doing that off-key holler on song after song after song. I blame Exene no more than Doe, it takes two.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this was a Yeah Yeah Yeahs thread

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Manzarek also played "Baby Elephant Walk" organ on all those early tracks, Noodle Vague.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

in which the variable X=Yeah Yeah Yeahs (leaves)

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I kind of like the Stooges, if they would just lose the little shirtless guy.

briania (briania), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

When I responded to "How did band (X) get their name I thought the band had adopted parentheses, perhaps inspired by (smog).

RE: "variable", my vote is Scissor Sisters.

Best thing about X = Billy Zoom.

There's no girl in X!

At least, not in the X I acknowledge as a seminal band.

X - Exene = Fear/Go-Go's

It's going to take me the rest of the evening to parse that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 June 2004 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

order in

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 11 June 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

pretenders! i like pretension but chrissie hynde is wrong-way-rubbing for me in a big way. and she's mixed so loud! still, love the guitar.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 11 June 2004 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck that. Anything after 'Aspirations' isn't really X.

Props to the 2001-ish live album though.
