...or am I mistakened AGAIN!

King Kobra (King Kobra), Thursday, 10 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

AND AND the guy from ZZ TOP with no beard is called BEARD OMGWTF?!?!

DO YOU SEE

the surface noise is another unwelcome bonus resulting from a preamp's inab (ele, Thursday, 10 June 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

No Jim, I don't.

In fact I'm totally confused now.

I know that the guy from ZZ Top who hasn't got a beard is called (Frank) Beard (every self-respecting music obsessive learned that in year 2, surely?) - but that seems to suggest that Stump's bass player did have three arms and that every self-respecting music obsessive knows that too - but I've been paying plenty of attention and taking lots and lots of notes and yet.... and yet.... and.... yet.... I don't! [breaks down and sobs]

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 11 June 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

they're called STUMP!! and he has THREE HANDS rather than ONE!!

(sorry)

the surface noise is another unwelcome bonus resulting from a preamp's inab (ele, Friday, 11 June 2004 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, but if that's the case then this still leaves me with what frankly appears to be an even more perplexing conundrum - why has no-one ever mentioned this to me before?!?

Is it some sort of a conspiracy?

Fwiw though, my mate Rob used to be in a band with a bass player who had one leg and a three-wheeled motor bike.

I suggested that they should call their demo "The Seven Legged, 15 Wheeled, Groove Machine"; but for some reason known only to themselves, they declined.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 11 June 2004 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

boring answer: I saw stump play live, back in the day. Excellent band, I watched the whole thing and if he had three hands, I would have noticed.

Actually, I got an e-mail from him about a month ago. He asked for pics of the band for his info page, and I found one he didn't have.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 11 June 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

His name's Kev, by the way, and he's from my home town - Grimsby.

Jez (Jez), Friday, 11 June 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

".... if he had three hands, I would have noticed."

What - even if he'd kept one of them in his pocket?

".... he's from my home town - Grimsby."

Are there many people with three hands in Grimsby?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 11 June 2004 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought it was odd that there was a man called Kev Hopper, playing in a band called Stump and yet, and yet... err, what was my point?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 11 June 2004 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

But surely if you've got three hands, you'd be a drummer or keyboard player or something? Using three hands on a bass does seems rather a waste.

Johnney B, Friday, 11 June 2004 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

you can play slap and use a pick at the same time!

the surface noise is another unwelcome bonus resulting from a preamp's inab (ele, Friday, 11 June 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You could play both necks of one of these....

http://www.gguitars.com/images/al781000/al781000_1a.jpg

No.... wait.... you'd need four hands to be able to do that, wouldn't you?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 11 June 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

not if you tuned one of the necks creatively

the surface noise is another unwelcome bonus resulting from a preamp's inab (ele, Friday, 11 June 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hang on, I'll see if he wants to contribute...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 11 June 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, then all you'd need to do would be to find a band that actually wanted two bass players; which means.... which means.... yes! Delta 5!

No, they've split up, bugger. So it means.... ummmm.... it's on the tip of my tongue....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 11 June 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

(Well, when I say "Hang on" it could be weeks...)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 11 June 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Still think, two bass players for the price of one, eh? Think how much that would save a hard-working band in beer alone!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 11 June 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there many people with three hands in Grimsby?

I heard a news report about a gang of 3 armed men robbing a bank...

Badlaboom...chish!

Jez (Jez), Friday, 11 June 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Police say they do not have enough information to be able to identify the perpetrators.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 11 June 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

So anyways....
I really don't care if he had 3 hands or not.
I just wanna know if I'm mistakened or not.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hang on, I'll see if he wants to contribute..."

"(Well, when I say "Hang on" it could be weeks...)"

If he's got three hands he should be like greased lightning on a PC - two hands on the keyboard and the third on the mouse!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

...and is it true that the singer for Cud had 4 stomachs?

peepee (peepee), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I can confirm I have three hands. One for plucking, one for fretting and one for scratching my arse.

Kev (Hopper)

Kev (Hopper), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that would explain why Mark failed to notice the third one - it was 'round the back, scratching away, all the time!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Now that you're here 'though, why don't you re-release A Fierce bastard Pancake, eh?

(Of course normally, under circumstances such as these, I'd suggest that you get your finger out of your arse in order to do so - but in your case, what with the extra hand and everything, you don't even need to do that, do you?)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

rayyyyyyyy. All hail me.

Anyhow, there is a page on his website saying that someone should re-release the Stump stuff as he gets tons of requests and interest about it. But the impression I get is that he's by and large moved on from it and doesn't want to do it himself.

MG and his showbiz mates part umm..... one. Oh well.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

We could have a celebrity basist thread!

I should be able to get Gary "Magic" Marker and Rick "Midnight Hatsize" Snyder to pop along - I might even be able to persuade Captain Sensible to drop in and tell everyone to fuck off.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

A mate of mine got the capt. a council flat.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Was it in Brighton? If so, I may have slept on the sofa there!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

you are correct.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

>But the impression I get is that he's by and large moved on from it and doesn't want to do it himself.

Are there people with three hands? A full, functioning third hand? How does that work?

You know guys, that's, um... not a hand.

I was gigging around the same time (The Groove Farm) and we appeared in the same fanzines. Another coincidence: Gene's bass player is also a Kev from Grimsby.

Sure, an interesting enough account, but then:

At 42 years of age, this is the first time I can ever remember getting praise from my mother.

:(((

i did suggest to mr hopper that it'd be swell if he could look after bass for keiji haino next time KH was in london & the c hayward could prob hook them up, but he gave me a shrug, not knowing at the time who KH was. ach what a pity. imagining that long instrumental stretch from "tupperware stripper" with KH doing absolutely anything over the top of it gets me excited
