How did they DO that?

Female singer songwriters tend to fall into this category for me right now... Jewel broke out with "Who Will Save Your Soul" which now that it's not omnipresent is quite good. Fiona Apple broke out with "Shadowboxer" which rocked. Tori never had a radio-friendly single like "Cornflake Girl" again. Who are the artists with a magnificent single utterly unlike the rest of their albums?

My soon to come Boyband: THE MERZBOYZ. We will make an amazing Pop single, yet after that track we will have nothing but NOISE on our album.

I wish...

There's this band, Truly, that had this one song on their first / only major label album, _Fast Stories....From Kid Coma_, called "Strangling". The rest of the album's a nauseating, murky, grunge-happy mess, but that song's actually memorable (to me, anyway). (Truly, of course, is best known for having ex-Soundgarden bassist Hiro Yamomoto in its fold.)

I saw Rosie Thomas open up for Damien Jurado last night, and, holy crap, I think I just found a female singer/songwriter that I am infatuated with. She has this real squeeky, mouselike voice when she talks, but once the singing commences, everything seriously stands still. If you haven't heard her before, check out the newest Jurado cd "Ghosts of David" and listen for the female singer. Shes got a full length coming out on Sub Pop as well. Anyone else find her brilliant? Or am I a loon w/ an infatuation for mouse- sounding/comedian types?

Totally. That song is fantastic.

"Shorty Swing My Way" - K.P. & Envyi (and by extension Li'l John and Carl Mo). I bought the whole "Rhythm & Quad" comp on the strength of that single alone - do not go there, my friends. That way lies assness.

truly also had "leslies coughing up blood" on that album....prolly my fave seattle band song ever.
