Help me discover metal

okay, i know nearly nothing about metal. but i feel i should at least give it a go and have some knowledge of it rather than skipping it altogether, as i have done until now. whats something that might break the stereotype of metal in my mind? something stimulating rather than just pure energy and power maybe. i think i may be too much of a pacifist for it altogether. but start recommending.

Remission by Mastodon is one of the only contemporary metal albums that's stuck out to me. Seems like most rock fans who have largely ignored its genre would appreciate it. It's got a lot more emotional dynamics than your typical "must destroy your fucking face" metal album.

Shit - you should also check out "Konerak" by Macabre; "Black Seeds Of Vengeance" by Nile; "Power Of The Dragonflame" by Rhapsody and "Iconoclasm in the 4th Desert" by Sigh

How about just, like, a Black Sabbath album? You know - to start off with, if you've never owned one. Have you, Tom?

I always meant to follow Chaki's intructions here-

Siegbran's "totally kick your ass with awesome shit" metal mix

but I never did. Maybe today.

Voivod's first album gets the reissue treatment for next week, 3-Disc version...

Also, Chuck Klosterman's "Fargo Rock City" is a funny, opionated look through 80's-90's pop metal. Worth a read I suppose.

pher (pher), Sunday, 13 June 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Dog Latin's mix is fantastic. Nightwish 4eva.

adam (adam), Sunday, 13 June 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but if you're going to check out Voivod, do you want to start with the first album? I'd recommend the Nothingface album by Voivod, Tom. I think Voivod was tremendous (possibly still are? haven't heard them now with Snake back in the band).

I listen to too much doom metal and left field weirdo metal stuff, so I'm generally reluctant to issue advice, since few of the bands I listen to are really repersentative of the genre as a whole. Is there any specific elment, besides intelligence or stimulation, you'd like? Any particular emotion are assthetic?

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Sunday, 13 June 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Assthetic. Heh heh- great new word.

Should be aesthetic, but I like assthetic better!

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Sunday, 13 June 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

representative! element! I really should read my messages before I post them.

Siegbran's "totally kick your ass with awesome shit" metal mix

I'm sharing those tracks on slsk at the moment (in the "metal mix" folder), if I can get my webspace up and running again I'll put them up for download. Although those tracks only span a couple of years (1990-1996) I think it's a very good introduction to 'modern metal'.

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 13 June 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you have on that Siegbran?
